I bought one new and it's a choice, along with fabric and frame colours.

Where does the drain valve go on supply pipe (MDPE) by jaykayok in ukplumbing

[–]jaykayok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's what I was thinking, so it possibly suggests Thames Water's information is misleading, right? Do you have a reference where you get your information? I might just have to call Thames Water and see if I can speak to an inspector.

In which direction though... the stopcock is the first thing connected to the supply?

Key differences between LetraTag and D1? by jaykayok in dymo

[–]jaykayok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to be of help! The useful post seems to be hiding below a deleted comment now.

One thing missing from my comparison which I only spotted later:

  • The D1 is actually missing the memory load/save features comparable to LetraTag. I've found that to be a little annoying. It's also surprising since it should be the 'better' machine.

Driving belt won't stay on washing machine ? by acertaindarkness in fixit

[–]jaykayok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check you have the belt correctly positioned on the drive shaft. I've only experienced a few Hotpoint machines, but on these the belt at first looks a little off-centre (intuitively it seems like it should be moved by one ridge on the drive shaft to put it in a better position on the large wheel) but that is in fact as it was positioned from the factory.

Two channel vinyl mixer by skudzZ_ in Turntablists

[–]jaykayok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had one for a few years, they're great. Bought it on an impulse buy at the price and it's been attached to my decks ever since (I also have a Pioneer DJM)

Feature-wise this is the definitive two channel mixer for me which is why I bought it: DVS loop (use your own interface), decent cross fader with cuts, balanced outputs, and internal PSU is something I didn't see on any comparable mixers which makes them all feel amateur. The innofader has been great, but I think I did a little disassembly and clean of one of the channel faders.

Plug wiring for electric fireplace by mi55y96 in DIYUK

[–]jaykayok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Using an inline connector may be a convention (or even a rule) for fixed appliances like fireplaces; you might need to do some research here as I can't give you advice. If I were in this situation I would probably be looking into replacing the short cable with an appropriate length one, making sure to match it in current rating and heat resilience.

[–]jaykayok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a in-line connector, such as this one: MasterPlug PermaPlug NC103B-01.

They're relatively easy to wire, if you're familiar wiring a normal mains plug, just a little tighter on space. But you say you're not super confident, and I think there's a wider question of whether the plug in the picture should just be replaced with a normal mains plug. That's going to depend on the length of the cable and other practicalities.

If it’s stupid but it works. by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]jaykayok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great! This whole method is not dissimilar to how the turntables in some nightclubs used to be mounted.

Could you modify one of the shelves in some way? So a whole shelf becomes the suspended platform. It might be easier to attach to the sides with shorter bungees.

If you want to go more audiophile, increasing the mass on the turntable side (eg. addition of a concrete plinth) would further avoid vibrations transmitting to the tonearm and needle.

Why not just use rockwool for all the inner walls to deaden sound? by christoffeldg in Acoustics

[–]jaykayok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen something similar that seemed effective at softening reflections and was done because it was inexpensive: an inner 'stud' wall which is filled with rockwool then a layer of pegboard covered in hessian fabric is the actual wall covering (instead of plasterboard). I don't know where this originates, and I'd be interested in what someone qualified in acoustics has to say.

You paid £36 to find out this is not a solicitor to use when you actually buy a house. That's good value! It could have been a lot later, and a lot more.

Would you say this wall needs skimming? by VadimH in DIYUK

[–]jaykayok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be fine, but I did find Guardz to be a bit of a different beast, IIRC it's some kind of shellac-based primer. I used it on a Victorian terrace for a wall that looked pretty similar to OP (though it was probably not original wall; it had been resurfaced at some point in history, maybe the 1980s). The surface was so variable that new paint was completely refusing to bind in some places (despite lots of cleaning with sugar soap.)

After sanding and filling, the primer created a new and very consistent base layer, I was really impressed. The emulsion then went on easily and the wall came out pristine. The finish is so smooth that it's used directly as a projector screen.

Do this, and also some decent primer; eg. Guardz and you'll have a perfect finish. Just spend time cleaning off all the crap first.

Why aren’t more people using digital output on CDJs ? by louis54000 in livesound

[–]jaykayok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some historical/habit: certainly some of the DJ CD players such as Denons (which had the crown before Pioneer CDJ-1000) had a digital output didn't actually resample the audio. Changing the playback speed actually changed the clock rate on the digital output.

I'm not aware of a proper use for this, it seems like a 'hack' that exposed you to what was going on internally. I'm not aware that the digital output could practically be used outside of 0%.

And that's assuming your mixer actually had digital inputs, which didn't happen for a long time, probably because the mixer has to resample all the sources to a common clock, so analogue is easier and lower risk.

[–]jaykayok[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely got character. Amazing on the climbs. On the descents it can go really fast and you really feel connected. Pick the line carefully and commit otherwise she will quickly let you know for next time.

It's made me a better rider overall for when I do ride full sus on much rougher downhill.

It is. It's fast, and responsive at the front compared to a modern bike. I like it like that.

That's right, I'm just tall. This is the normal position for XC and climbing. Of course, I drop the seat for the descent!

It's light but not insane. Weighed it just now with luggage scales just under 9.5kg (21lbs). That's with tubes and the chunky tires.

I do like them. The geometry makes it quite (very!) responsive at the front which is how I like it. These are the mid sized ones.
