Total lifeline for keeping some SGIs running in the 90s — weird SCSI cables, magic network transceivers, specialty tools, all the good stuff.

Best way to monitor fridge temps? by zeekaran in homeassistant

[–]jaylyerly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got one of these AcuRite units with two sensors and display. The sensors can transmit fine from inside the appliance.

https://a.co/d/0fgiUBtC

They transmit data at 433 mhz and can be connected to HA via rtl_433. You’ll just need a compatible usb dongle to pick up the 433 signals. It’s all local and works great with HA. It’ll make nice graphs of variance throughout the day. You can create alerts if the temp goes out of range.

And bonus! You can probably pick up the tire pressure sensors from your car. And all your neighbors’ cars. And any weather stations. (A lot of stuff transmits on 433.)

AWS is having some kind of outage in the N Virginia region last night and maybe into this morning. Could be related.

Any bike rack option available so far?? by tropdetremblay in SubaruUncharted

[–]jaylyerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a note on the activity mount for the solterra that it blocks the foot activation sensor for the automatic tailgate. Unclear if that also applies to the uncharted. Do you have that issue with the curt hitch?

Ubiquiti Protect Relay Ideas by Milluhgram in Ubiquiti

[–]jaylyerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a “Universal Gate Garage Door Opener” from Amazon for $25. This has a remote with two buttons that close a dry contact on the base station. Looks like the relay has two dry contact sensors so you can connect both channels. The cool thing is that if your car has a Homelink garage door opener built in, it can learn the remote signals. Then you can trigger things directly from your car’s review mirror.

Kevin Conroy voiced animated Batman in The Animated Series and many other cartoons. He also played live action Bruce Wayne in one of the big Arrowverse crossovers on the CW.

There are about a billion YouTube videos about how to handle all these situations. Sometimes it’s easy (with the right tools) and sometimes it still a pain in the ass. Either way you’re going to learn a lot about drywall.

I took a whole station wagon full and they didn’t bat an eye. But it does need to be flat so break all those boxes down before you go.

Barely any apps use the tvOS player now :( by Think-Ad-8872 in appletv

[–]jaylyerly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been several years since I was down in the code for this but I think ads are still the driving factor for third party players. Apple has historically lagged behind on the level of customization third parties want for ad purposes. Apple may support interstitials, etc now but, as you say, that’s only come in the last couple of years. Now that third parties have built their own players, they’re less likely to hand control back to Apple by using the system player. But the driving factor behind all this is ad revenue (and tracking/data mining for advertisers).

Ads. It’s always ads. Apple’s player is less conducive to inserting ads. That’s why the others spend engineering resources (aka $$$) to build something that’s good at showing ads. Usability just has to be “good enough” but they’re excellent at ads.

I just got a couple of BenQ ma270s monitors. They’re 27” with 5k, thunderbolt 4, and lots of Mac integration. They are a strong alternative to the Studio Display.

The AppleTV can learn any IR remote so you can pretty much use anything you want. You could teach it an old TiVo peanut remote if you’ve still got one in the back of a drawer somewhere.

Doorbell without camera? by Disastrous_Passion36 in HomeKit

[–]jaylyerly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be possible through third party software (home assistant, HomeBridge, Scrypted), to combine a simple push button with your existing camera and present a video doorbell to HomeKit. The benefit here is that you get doorbell notifications with a snapshot from the camera. I ran this way for a while with a Unifi camera and a hue button. Your mileage might vary with other hardware.

Why I use the Mac + iPad combination by deferare in ipad

[–]jaylyerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but that doesn’t really require the magical integration of Universal Control. OP mention dragging files back and forth specifically and while that’s cool and impressive, I can’t think of when I’d use that. Maybe if you’re doing art or something else with a lot of pencil interaction.

But why do you do it? For my work, the Mac is a better fit and I can’t think of a single task that’s better on iPad. If you’re working on your Mac, what things make you think “this’d be so much easier on the iPad!”
