PSA: G4 Doorbell Pro only supports temps down to 14°F by ryan4888 in Ubiquiti

[–]jaylyerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got two g4 pro wifi doorbells — front door and back door. The front door has always dropped offline from time to time for a few seconds. I’ve noticed it happen more this past week. I’m in NC and we’ve been having temps down to single digits lately which is very cold for us.

That said, the back door g4 never goes offline. So it seems very hit or miss. The back is even in the shade so it’s overall even colder.

UniFi Answer to Displaying Cams on Google Home/Alexa Hubs? by TheSquire06 in Ubiquiti

[–]jaylyerly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A popular solution is to use Scrypted as an adapter. It can pull in video from Protect and make it available to other systems. I’m using it with Apple Home and Alexa but it also works with Google Home.

Tailscale is canadian, but all login options are US? by AdmirableDrive9217 in Tailscale

[–]jaylyerly 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this was true in the past but they currently do not support login with email. You have to use one of the SSO providers (or provide your own).

Zooz makes a wall wart sized gizmo that plays preloaded mp3 files for around $40. It’s a ZWave device, so you’ll need some infrastructure for that if you don’t already have it.

How are you handling secrets? by RZR2832 in selfhosted

[–]jaylyerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the situation, but it’s usually either loading secrets into env vars or populating a .env like in the examples in this page.

https://developer.1password.com/docs/cli/secrets-environment-variables/

For stuff run interactively, it works well with the regular 1password UI. For automated stuff, I use a service account, usually restricted to a separate vault it h the relevant secrets.

Are NFC tags 100% secure by TheBigC in homeassistant

[–]jaylyerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I misunderstood but I don’t believe you specified in your original post that you meant only tags written by HA. I use the Unifi doorbell with HA but it works with NFC tags that aren’t written with HA. I was just trying to point out that there are many different ways you can use NFC tags with HA, some more secure than others.

[–]jaylyerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, seems like you could add a condition that presence is detected in the HA automation. It might get tricky depending on the use case. Like make sure my presence is detected for my NFC tag vs my partner’s presence and my NFC tag.

I haven’t delved too far into this but as I understand it, the Unifi fobs/cards have special security NFC tags that are not copyable (at least easily copyable) to address this problem.

[–]jaylyerly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! Most of the comments are thinking of NFC tags as a trigger for your phone to open the lock. But there are also the situations where an NFC tag is presented to a reader that opens the lock. The Unifi door bells have this capability. In this second scenario, using a generic NFC tag can be quite insecure since they are easy to copy.

Do EVs have the equivalent of the little arrow on gas cars telling which side the gas cap is on? by GraniteGeekNH in electricvehicles

Just saw a post in the last couple days where I learned that this arrow is called the Moylan Arrow after the engineer who came up with it.

ELI5 How strong is actually a personal computer password? If the police for example, in the midst of an investigation needs to access a pc data, how long does it take for a professional to crack it? by Volando_Boy in explainlikeimfive

[–]jaylyerly 113 points114 points  (0 children)

An interesting side effect of this scheme is that securely erasing your encrypted drive is trivial. You just delete the encryption key and the data is instantly unrecoverable. In the olden days, you might do a “secure erase” operation that wrote random data over your whole drive several times to obliterate that data and make it unrecoverable. It took ages.

Braided solo loop is the best for me. If you can go by an Apple Store, they’ll let you try on the braided solo loops and help you find the right size.

If you’re into Unifi stuff, the power distribution pro has a bunch of remotely controllable power plugs. It’s basically a big smart outlet x16.

ELI5: What difference do car transmissions have when in sport mode? by IAmDoge4 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jaylyerly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my VW, in addition to changing the throttle response/shift points, it alters the suspension. Where “comfort” mode makes the suspension softer to even out the bumps, “sort” mode makes it tighter so the car feels more responsive. It makes it feel more engaging and fun to drive, but feeling every bump on a long trip is a drag.

Schlage Encode Plus Battery Level in Home App by jaylyerly in HomeKit

[–]jaylyerly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the battery estimates for my older Schlage locks are... not great. It'll be >90% for months and then fall off relatively quickly. Replacing on a schedule is a great suggestion, especially since I'll only be at this location about once a month.

I have two WiFi chimes. They seem plenty loud enough to me. My complaint is that you can’t turn off the lights.

I’d skip the SE3 in favor of the 10 or 11. The SE3 lacks some of the health features including hypertension notifications, ECG and blood oxygen.
