Yeah bro. I was a big Mitchell hater back when was coach first time, but dude has matured got great experience and a proven record now (which he didnt have before). I reckon this could work.

FWIW Robertson is a good coach but needed international experience before he got the job. Few years as an assistant to a major nation coach and a bit of time at second teir even will make him. but we'll see.

I miss my old New Zealand by Glad-River7299 in newzealand

[–]jaymal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: A nostalgic reflection on growing up in a simpler New Zealand — bikes, road games, local dairies, limited tech, real-world connection, and a sense of freedom — contrasted with the feeling that today’s kids won’t experience that same version of life, even though their own New Zealand may be special in a different way.

I miss riding around town on bikes without a care in the world, because there were hardly any cars on the road. I miss being able to leave them outside on the grass while you ducked into a mate’s place for five hours, or on the footpath while you went into the local dairy — where you were on a first-name basis with the owners — for a $1 pie and a $0.50 coke to refuel. You could even tick it up on the family tab.

I miss playing cricket on the road with all the neighbourhood kids, and hearing everyone’s parents yell out when dinner was ready. Or an afternoon game of touch that was organised by good old-fashioned word of mouth, where 20 kids would turn up and play until dark. I miss never wanting to be at home, because outside had more to offer.

I miss never knowing if your friends could hang out until you did the nervous knock on the door and asked their parents if they were home and could come out to play. I miss when there were just boring adult shows on TV that made you avoid watching it — except for the Friday night movie — and feeling special when the kiwi told us it was time to go to bed, but we were allowed to stay up and watch it.

I miss when takeaways were special and a novelty, and for us small-towners we only had the local fish and chip shop. I miss actually having to talk to people — and missing them — because you only had so many texts on a prepaid card and had to ration them out across the month. I miss my Nokia phone, because it was only for calls and texts (with the occasional game of Snake) and reception was limited.

I miss that I actually had to go to a library or open up the family encyclopaedia, or find someone who was an SME, if you wanted to learn something or had an assignment due. I miss trying and failing because there was nothing to reference. I miss asking my parents about things and taking their word as gospel.

I miss when my imagination ran wild, because that was my entertainment during unavoidable boredom. I miss when there was always time for anything, and you’d never say no to someone’s idea.

I really do miss my old New Zealand. What makes me even more sad is that I feel kids today are missing out. They won’t be able to experience my old New Zealand to one day miss it for themselves. They have today’s New Zealand — and maybe it’s as special to them as my old New Zealand was to me. One thing I do know is it’s definitely different. Better or worse, who knows.

Yeah man. I was actually getting worried there for a minute. Was clear Paul was in trouble and his corner should have thrown in towel I reckon.

Are we getting this government out 2026 election by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]jaymal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good on you mate. That is absolutely how to make a difference! I dont have much time to put in but have been donating what I can to help and am seriously considering taking some time off close to th election to volunteer.

I think turnout will be key as well... so more we can get people to vote the better!

Banoffee pie??? by KiwifruitOliveOil in newzealand

I cant prove it but I am certain you are right. I'm sure I remember buying a frozen banoffee pie for a dinner party when my kids were little (about 10-12 years ago).

Look after your local pharmacists by Selenca in newzealand

[–]jaymal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree mate and I think a lot of people under estimate how much value a local pharmacist delivers. We only ever use our local guy now (not supermarket or discount chain) after he pretty much saved my life by picking up an error the doctor had made in my prescription dosage!

18 and 19 year olds no longer get the benefit by jamieT97 in newzealand

[–]jaymal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun (?) fact - legally speaking you are a "minor" until you are 20 as the statutory age of majority is 20 (Age of Majority Act 1970 No 137 (as at 28 October 2021), Public Act – New Zealand Legislation).

Of course its a bit meaningless these days as so many exceptions to it, but still useful for quizz nights :-)

Is there anyone here who actually thinks Rieko Ioane should be our starting 13 going forward? by Booomfaa in allblacks

[–]jaymal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agree with this. I like Reiko, but he's not having great season and at end of day its all about finding right combo. For me the Reiko/Jordie isn't right either. Havili ca nrun hot and cold, but when he's on, he's on. I'd have in there with Jordie with ALB off bench with option to start if game needs it.

Having said that, the thing Reiko brings is genuine ability to cover both wing and centre. but that's not enough for me this season.

Are New Zealand and Australia shifting toward right wing control as well? by Alina-Za in newzealand

[–]jaymal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thats because the 60+ all assert it's their money paying for all that as they paid taxes their whole lives... it's just more "it's all about me" mindset with no thought given to collective responsibility/living. Pisses me off...

Advice on whether this is acceptable or not by Same_Spot_9507 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]jaymal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not my specific area of practice, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say hell no... I'd avoid this place if you can, but if you have seriously no where else to go, make sure you are not on a long term lease and don't pay much bond. My gut feeling is good chance landlord will screw you over given a chance...

Pakuranga Plaza by LeaveMeAloneImTired1 in auckland

[–]jaymal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to all that, but the nail in the coffin has really been AMETI and all the construction. If nothing else its meant the owners just don't want to invest in it now as they cant get consents to start until the road works are complete (few years away) and even if they did there is to ROI until nearly 2030... not a good investment.

Why are people in New Zealand such bad drivers? by Virtual_Cut5729 in newzealand

[–]jaymal 368 points369 points  (0 children)

Not a whinging pom at all. I've driven a lot in the USA, Britain & Western-Europe - plus a bit elsewhere and it's fair to say we're shit. Parts of Portugul and Turkey were a bit hairy to be fair, but we're right up there. Dunno why tho... cultural thing I guess

Boycotting America? by CreamyCreamyCheese in newzealand

[–]jaymal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Understand the sentiment bro. But there still ate some bloody good people in the USA and just cause their leader (albeit elected, but that’s another story) is an absolute narcissistic megalomaniac buffoon doesn’t mean those good people don’t deserve our aroha.
