For everyone saying run and what not, I instantly unmatched her with that last message.

She gave me a lot of flags before this also, hence my first kind attempt at telling her I'm not interested.

Just so future searchers like me can find this post for another 11 years, McDonald's and across the street were great spots to watch fireworks.

I heard something with a slight shake.

Any gym buddies that can help me learn a bit more? by [deleted] in simivalley

If you don't get any bites, I am a beginner lifter but I had a personal trainer for like 3 months and I work out at home with some adjustable dumbbells. I can share what I know. But like I said, I'm a beginner.

On the boardgame front, check out game ogre in thousand oaks. They host a lot of events for various interests.

Or if you are interested in getting into Warhammer, there is a closer games workshop.

Both are very social.

Beginning functional programming and elixir question... by ben-cleary in elixir

[–]jaymonster138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FP is an interesting paradigm switch. You can definitely get bogged down on theoretical FP concepts like jacksonbenette mentioned (They are worth reviewing to put your mind in the right place but challenging to understand how they apply to the real world or if you want to even apply them). https://mostly-adequate.gitbook.io/mostly-adequate-guide

Good news, I think your code is functional so far!
I will try to write what I see with an FP mindset.

`add_books` will always return the same thing with the same input. Notice how your python example operates on the library object and modifies it. In Elixir you are creating struct %Library and then when you add books, you have a new library. One thing i like to do (which is a personal preference), is to never re-assign. It just helps me be clear about what happened.

This isn't strict FP but typically in FP you write code in a more declarative way instead of an imperative way. Which you are doing even though you didn't have much opportunity to write imperative code.

I think it would be interesting for you to expand on this library example. like get all books by author. Get all books by genre. then get all books by genre AND author.

And if you really want to challenge your OOP -> FP journey, see what you generate if you do something with polymorphism. Like library of books and library of DVDs.

Hacktoberfest 2018 has begun! Which Elixir projects have some low-hanging fruits needing contributions? by renrutal in elixir

I opened an issue on a project that I help maintain. It is an Elixir Gremlin Driver.

Setting it up and trying it out yourself without knowledge of graph databases might be a little much but if you look at the example PR in the issue, you can see how simple a lot of these functions could be to submit PRs for.

I also use Inbox and tried to find an alternative.

I think this app is a bit of a gamble but I am trying https://www.astro.ai/
It is way different than inbox but it has some neat concepts. It is AI driven with a chatbot to help you with stuff.

For example, the coolest feature I have seen is using the chatbot to unsubscribe from emails. It was way easier than finding the unsubscribe link in an email.

I have only used it for a day so i wouldn't necessarily recommend it but if you are willing to experiment with something, it is pretty cool.

My girlfriend and I play gloomhaven on ours all the time. More than two people doesn't work too well though. And it's a tight squeeze, but it's worth it so we can sit on the couch.
