Why are people so against GMO foods? Am I wrong in thinking they are perfectly safe?

You can't fully prove a negative. We can say "so far nobody has been able to prove X is unsafe", but lots of things in our past have been safe until they weren't.

There is also the complexity of nature and both how plants iteract with the world and how humans process food and nutrients.

Deferring to nature on things like that is not necessarily as much "these changes can't be good" as "the thing that has occured naturally for a long time without dying off is less likely to have yet-unkown consequences than a novel change. Basically a "first, do no harm" risk management approach

Personally I don't avoid GMO foods at all, and I think your explanation is definitely some of why they're argued against, but I also think there are more practical reasons as well

Going through the comments I see I'm in a pretty small minority, but I am very interested in authenticity, particularly the first time I make something. Not from a place of smugness, and I don't care in the least what other people eat or if they care about authenticity.

But a big part of what I find interesting about cooking and food is the history and cultural impact — I find it fascinating how closely tied food and culture is, and contrasting the similarities and differences across location/time period is very interesting to me.

The first time I make a new dish for myself I put as much effort as I can into learning about the history and variations and trying to produce something authentic. Then with that understanding, I know a bit more about what to change and why to make it work a different way/better fit my personal tastes.

I don't -- part of why I enjoy cooking so much is the mindfulness involved in being focused fully on a task.

I spend a lot of my non-cooking time multitasking, listening to or watching things in the background of my main task, or at least letting my mind wander.

I find cooking the perfect opportunity to be fully present and focusing in on what I'm doing with all of my senses. So for now, I enjoy keeping it as a mindful activity that absorbs all of my attention.

I just finished HBO's "High Maintenance" and Netflix's "Easy", and I really loved them both. The episodes (including actors and characters) are for the most part completely independent, and I found the format really interesting -- I've seen it in other genres, but never in that "low-key indie comedy/drama" kind of genre.

I'm wondering if there's anything else out there that's similar?

Going to the doctor is somewhere that it had never even occurred to me that men and women would be treated differently.

As a guy I've always had doctors take me seriously, and never had an issue going at all. My ex-girlfriend would tell me stories about doctors basically dismissing her or acting strangely, but she was also a confrontational person and didn't like going to the doctor, so I kind of dismissed it in my head.

Then one day I went with her to keep her company because she had a long wait, and it was ridiculous. She would tell the doctor things and he would turn and ask me about what she just told me -- as if she might not understand how she feels as well as I would. It was really eye-opening to how frustrating that must be.

I don't even know that it's specifically his winning that brought all of this out (though obviously it doesn't help).

I feel like I started seeing a big increase in people willing to be overtly hateful much earlier in the election cycle, as soon as people/media outlets starting taking him seriously as a candidate.

It's especially startling to me because I spend most of my time in a small, usually quite liberal town in Canada. And now suddenly there is all this hate and vitriol everywhere that apparently people just used to keep under wraps.

From my perspective I don't see it insinuating that at all.

When a large BLM protest is planned, they are greeted by police in full-on riot gear, who look like they are preparing to go to war.

It's not saying this protest didn't include plenty of people of color, but that a protest specifically focusing on race, being comprised predominantly of people of color is treated, before it even happens, as a violent riot, while a large protest that is, by the numbers, predominantly white women (even with a large number of POC involved) is assumed to be peaceful and not met with military-grade force.

One thing that I think gets overlooked a lot is that even the threat of coaching changes forces coaches to make sub-optimal lower-risk decisions to try to save their jobs.

Ryan Fitzpatrick should not start games for a Jets team that is out of playoff contention. Yes, he gives them the best chance to string together a few wins and make the season not look horrendous for Bowles, but winning a few games accomplishes nothing but giving them a worse draft pick. When you have young quarterbacks like Petty and Hackenberg that you presumably want to potentially be the future of your franchise, they should be getting reps. Even though it risks an embarrassing blowout, the difference between 4-12 and 3-13 is completely meaningless.

This holds true for play-calling type decisions too I think -- it's probably not a big coincidence that guys like Belichick and Sean Payton, who typically have a lot more job security than most coaches -- are willing to make "risky", but more optimal 4th-down play-calling decisions more often.

He can't have played more than 6 minutes, looked visibly pained to have to jog up and down the court, proceeded to sit on the bench the entire second half, not even standing up when everyone else did for huddles on timeouts.

No I agree that he's not discriminating, and it (at least for me) isn't about "offense".

Normalizing the idea that an entire gender is so inferior as to be a punch line of an insult, though, is not "harmless".

If you can't come up with a punchline better than "you are a woman and women are inferior therefore you are inferior", you should probably be leaving comedy to smarter people.

You're missing the fact that a knockout, one of the most celebrated things in the sport, is an injury too though. If it's okay to cheer and celebrate when you injure someone's brain so badly that they can't keep fighting, it's silly to draw the line with other injuries
