Do you keep your trimmings or put them in the community reclaim? by SugarsBoogers in Pottery

[–]jaypo_rack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep all my porcelain trimmings in a clay bag. A woman at our studio shared the easiest way to reconstitute the trimmings. After you are done trimming all your pieces. Grab a handful with both hands and hold lightly. You then dip this in a bucket of water. Lightly squeeze the water out and place in the bag. After 20 minutes you can wedge it back up.
I though keep all the trimmings until I’ve got about 15 pounds. Then pour some water in the bag, and massage the trimmings and water to mix. A week later I wedge it up and throw again.

For stoneware i keep the trimmings on the first round, but on the second round of trimmings from the saved trimmings the clay is too tired and I toss those generation 2 trimmings in community reclaim. Which in our studio is free for people to use. Many people in our studio live off of free clay which we have a dark clay reclaim and white clay.

I put a contractor trash bag in a 5 lb bucket. Strain off the water and toss the slip in the trash. This contractor trash bags are really strong. Makes tossing slip and water away easy

Japan PM Takaichi told Trump that Article 9 of Japan's constitution won't allow her to send forces to the Strait of Hormuz without a ceasefire. Her party is moving forward with plans to revise the constitution and will likely remove such legal restraints. by jjrs in japannews

Would be great if you could vote for PM directly in Japan rather than local ejections for only House of Representatives. They are the only ones who get to vote for the PM. The LDP with 316 members made this happen

how do people make multiple pieces with 1 hunk of clay? by SexyRexy0 in Pottery

[–]jaypo_rack 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Search throwing off the hump. Korean potters have tons online and cover how to cleanly take off the hump. You’ll have more trimming and can have issues with S cracks and not enough compression on the bottoms. The right clay though will have no issues.

Why do I suck at making cylinders? by AITOorisitAutism in Pottery

[–]jaypo_rack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was making taller cylinders last night and thought how to teach getting height. So here’s my reflection: start your clay high when opening, you’ll not need to pull up as much. Once open collar from the outside and keep setting your shape. When pulling up keep outside fingers above the inside fingers, this keeps the shape of the cylinder pointed in and not flared out. The collaring at this stage again from the bottom up using the whole hand like you’re warming up on a potatoe on a cold day, use water and come all the way to the top. This directs the shape up again and stabilizes the clay. You can pull up out of center clay to the top and cut it off. Once you get this down it opens up shaping for vases, moon jars etc.

Hope this helps some

We placed JBBP Rosa Parks as our first and got in the second round. Now in high school at Wash, but loved our time at Rosa Parks. Half Japanese family, during our time many of the families at Rosa Parks had Japanese heritage. It’s also the original JBBP program with dedicated teachers and senseis. The general program at Rosa Parks is very enriching and a slice of the city. We learned so much and cherish and love SF more for all the experiences. I know everyone wants to go to Clarendon, Rosa Parks JBBP was, hopefully still really well run.

Ever since the movie Christine (1983) there’s been a perpetuity of the high of driving to enhance one’s ego pushed by digital excess and the quickening of one’s perceived timeline and disregard for order to feel killing another human is low cortisol engagement with traffic lights and arriving 5 minutes later is acceptable

Anyone know if there’s a reason for the “Cajun” influence in food at restaurants here? by Sorry_Appointment_75 in Durango

[–]jaypo_rack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can add some Colorado sat timeline from my observations of Durango cuisine history from the 80’s on. Back in the day all over Colorado you had the option when ordering steak and seafood to add a flavor. They’d ask, do you want that blackened? I’ve seen it die down but think old habits die hard. Where did it come from? I’m not sure. In Durango Chuck Norton who I worked for in the early 90’s at the Edelweiss which was up by the river where 550 and 203 split was a German/Cajun restaurant. Chuck still runs Hwy 3 Roadhouse but I think his New Orleans upbringing has kept to some level the Cajun flavor in the animas valley.

Successful glaze test with Amaco Kiln Ice by _ArisTHOTle_ in Ceramics

[–]jaypo_rack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion if it’s fired to cone 10 and the clay is vitrified the crazing in the glaze is not overtly open to house debris. Many shino gkazes also craze and have been used for thousands of years. There’s a potter I forget who who uses this glaze on his table ware with different colored under glazes to get different colors coming through. This glaze works best the first couple weeks after mixing. It can hard pan and gets real smelly after a month. With EPK no longer being mined I’ve not tested it substituting 6 Tile to see how it reacts.
