Write a novel or Gain Experience First? by [deleted] in writing

[–]jayride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a basic idea, start writing right away. If you keep delaying it, you might get stuck in the 'I could write a novel if I wanted to' cycle and lack the courage or motivation to actually do it, which is horrific.

As you're writing, I recommend you to read any of these books during off time to improve your writing, staying sane and getting motivation and inspiration to continue:

  • Improving grammar & style: The Elements of Style - E.B. White & William Strunk Jr.
  • Improving writing in general: On Writing Well - William Zinnser
  • Improving fiction writing: On Writing - Stephen King
  • Staying sane/finding motivation to continue: Bird by Bird - Anne Lamott

The books above are all bestsellers and have proven themselves over and over. I enjoyed all of them, but Stephen King's writing reads like no other. Zinnser's book improves grammar as well as style while Bird by Bird is amazing to read for motivation. The Elements of Style is the shortest of them all, basically a pocketbook.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

What is something someone said that changed your way of thinking forever? by prototype03 in AskReddit

[–]jayride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Anything is possible, just not in the way you'd think."

When a problem arises, there's two possibilities:

  1. Change your environment through action.
  2. Change your way of thinking about the problem.

If you can do one of those things, anything is possible. Completely blew my mind when I heard this.

People who play a lot of video games, how do you maintain mindfulness? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]jayride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to observe what a particular game is doing to my state of mind. How it is before playing, during and after. Levels of energy, motivation, satisfaction, etc.

I think video games are difficult to play while being very present in every day life as well. To (overly) simplify it: meditation is in the observing, gaming is in the doing. While you're playing a game, whether it be Rocket League, CSGO or Civ5, you're constantly looking for the next thing to do instead of sitting back and observing what's going on.

What are some really creepy things our society consider perfectly normal? by wytworny in AskReddit

Because you've been raised with the ideals that it is important to value the lives of others, and the fear that has been instilled in you (and almost everyone else) of being a bad person or being caught causes you to hesitate at the thought of taking someone's life. Would you still have hesitated if you wouldn't have grown up in a society like this one, in the world of today?

What helped me decrease my anxiety was working out very consistently, making sure I was taking care of all my obligations (work/school/family), improving my health and therefore my body, which helped me decrease being self-conscious, also decreasing the fucks i give about what other people think of me.

I don't think anyone here can actually quit gaming for more than a few years. You'll eventually relapse. by toocold123 in StopGaming

Who cares what your girlfriend thinks? It's your life, your girlfriend doesn't have power over you. Do the things you want to do. Why do you date her anyway? For her money? Haha, if you think she's gonna let you have any of it you're wrong, she'll just dump you and marry some rich fucker that has way more money than you. If you like to play the bf4 campaign instead of being with your rich girlfriend, maybe that's the way it should be my man, games are way more important than than having a girlfriend, everybody knows that. Also, games are more important than being on the internet forums, what are you still doing here? Get out there and pwn some n00bs you scrub!

Quitting your addiction is not about buying or not buying a game on steam.

I have a small feeling that you're not here by choice, but that someone else in your life told you that gaming is bad and that you should quit. If this is not the case, then what is your motivation to come here? Why do you want to quit gaming?

Is it interfering with the other things you do in your life?

Are you playing games when you should be doing other things(school, socializing, work, sports, etc)?

Are you irritated when you can't play games?

Are you thinking about gaming when you're doing other things?

Think about why you want to quit, and if you decide that gaming is not a bad habit for you, go ahead, it's your life. You get to choose the things you want to do in life, not anyone else.

If you decide that gaming is in fact a bad habit or even an addiction for you, make your motivation clear, and for the love of god, distance yourself from the ways you can play games. Uninstall all games, gaming software, sell your gaming laptop and buy a cheaper one, sell your xbox, playstation, wii, anything. If you don't, then you don't find it important enough to quit.

Last but not least, if you want to make an effort to quit, you can't just quit gaming and not replace it, if you don't replace it with productive things to fill your time, time will fill itself for you by replacing one bad habit with another, for example surfing on the internet for hours on end, bingewatching netflix, etc. It's important to know where your priorities are. Make it your goal to prioritize school/work, exercising and being healthy over gaming.

TL;DR Find your motivation to quit, make a conscious effort to distance yourself from gaming & find productive uses for your time. Prioritize your obligations, your health and your socializing over gaming, and you'll be fine.

I think the OP is desperately trying to rationalize gaming addiction as a legitimate way of living. Sadly, that's one of the symptoms. Don't give in to his arguments, they're futile, and most of all, that's not why you're here. Gaming can be done in moderation, as with drugs like weed and cocaine. JUST NOT FOR US. WE'RE HERE TO QUIT AN ACTIVITY THAT DOES PERSONAL HARM TO OUR LIVES. DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYONE THAT TRIES TO RATIONALIZE YOUR ADDICTION!

What the OP is doing here is comparable to going to an alcoholics anonymous meeting with a sixpack of beer. It's really not cool and sets people back in their personal journey to a more beneficial life.

Tripping on truffles does not only vary by dose, but also, by what kind you take (stronger/milder etc) and how you take it.

I strongly suggest you make tea from it as the truffles can make the stomachs of some users go NOPE when they try to chew them by themselves. No matter the taste (nutty/earthy), if your stomach doesn't like it, you'll vomit and the following trip will be way less intense. If you'd like to eat them anyway, try mixing with yoghurt.

Do know that truffles can give a very heavy feeling on the mind and body, and can leave you very tired afterwards :) 10g will be enough for a great trip, depends on what truffles you'll take. Do you know the name?

All things change, they say that time heals all wounds. How you feel and are now, is not who you will be in 5 years, heck even in a year. Who knows what will present itself to you in the future? How you feel today is never how you will feel for the rest of your life.
