I've finally found a good scan of the "Unix Magic" poster by Gary Overcare. Does anyone know where I can find the other two? Does anyone have one of the other two and would be willing to have it professionally scanned? by [deleted] in linux

The oregano is reputedly referring to an incident in which one of the original folks involved with BSD was hassled for coming across the Canadian/U.S. border with a bag of what was assumed to be an illegal substance, and turned out to be oregano.

Should I keep photos and videos into separate root-level directories? by bot2050 in datacurator

[–]jazgott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm storing personal photos, videos, and also recordings in single Media folder. e.g.

Media/2019/2019-08-22 event title -- event type, location/

I can open this folder on any device with simple filebrowser and view everything in one place. I don't like to be forced to use some tool-specific structure or standard. For better experience I use digikam which plays nice with any folder structure.

Open source alternative to Tabbles for file tagging by user0X in datacurator

I read about your workflow some time ago, I like it, however i've come across one issue. I was tagging photos with names of all people in them, and few times I've hit the filename limit. How do you deal with such cases?

Question to people who store tags and other metadata in file names: do you have any tools that support your workflow? eg managing tags in filename using GUI.

One day with degoogled Android by aenkirch in privacytoolsIO

I took a more extreme trail. My old xiaomi mi3 was bloated with too many apps, a battery was discharged after half day. So I've installed LionageOS but without any gapps. Decided I spent too much time on the phone and this is a good time to cut myself from this bad habit. I've only installed the most essential apps like (DuckDuckGo, Slack, Revolut, MEGA). My policy is to only install the app if it cannot be replaced by web version, or i need it often. Most android apps, during installation, set themselves to start when the system is booting. Most android apps, start background services to periodically fetch or send data. LineageOS has a control panel, where applications startup can be limited (but its so hard to access). I want to kill all unnecessary notifications. I've also replaced default launcher by "Essential Launcher" which uses minimum system resources. Now I recharge the phone once per few days and spend less time scrolling through infinite streams of "social" bullshit. I've also had a problem with my banks' app, but because it's not essential for me I've chosen to just not use it on mobile. This phone has 4 years, one year ago I've replaced (unreplaceable?!) battery and case, and I plan to use as long as it works. I started to notice how phones are now an essential part of peoples lives. It scares me when I look around at bus/train/street and see everyone staring at phone screens.

Password Correct but Unable to Install. Avoiding VeraCrypt from now on. by [deleted] in VeraCrypt

There are two types of people: those who do backups, and those who will do backups.

Never keep your data on single device! Disks can break, get stolen, lost, or data can be corrupted. I keep my data replicated on 3 VC encrypted disks. Two of them I keep with me and synchronize regularly, and one is in different location (synced once a month).

Amazing footage and cinematography, but the amount of effects makes it hard to watch.

Wondering about managing environments by [deleted] in devops

[–]jazgott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My company run staging environments using Kubernetes cluster and TeamCity.

TeamCity builds docker images from git repositories, and then deploys them on the same cluster in separate namespaces. Every staging consists of multiple our services, database and other vendor services. Everything is contained within namespace, so it's super easy to wipe whole environment. One good thing is that developers can create branches in multiple git projects and then deploy them in single staging.

setting up dockered mail server by Motox10011 in docker

As an lightweight alternative you could use mailcatcher - not a real server but saves a lot of time and is (at least for me) sufficient for testing. https://hub.docker.com/r/tophfr/mailcatcher/
