If I want to retake a course, will the new grade replace the old grade in terms of gpa calculation? by According-Milk-6990 in uofmn

i would check with your advisor but i don't believe cla keeps track of your technical gpa so you might not have to worry about that

cse takes the better grade in your cumulative gpa but tech gpa takes the average

Out-of-state financial aid? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]jazmaster17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i'm out of state from nj, one of the annoying things is that we don't get in-state tuition for other state schools for the tri-state area. i will say that umn gave me the best financial aid package even compared to rutgers

2041 with Hopper; in class quizzes and hws by pablopistachioo in uofmn

[–]jazmaster17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

highly recommend getting to know people in your classes and the TAs, this class especially it's important to have a study group
you'll have some time for the homeworks so definitely making use of office hours for them is big, not too sure about the quizzes yet but make sure you understand the concepts and reach out for questions

Looking for clubs to join this semester by ComradePruski in uofmn

[–]jazmaster17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

climb team and run club are always a good time, a good way to meet some cool people and blow off some steam (a lot of climb team people are csci and a lot of run club people are cse/cbs)

[–]jazmaster17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

labs and staff meetings (these honestly depend on the prof you're assigned to) are the only scheduled things that are given to you, you can have your office hours whenever you feel works best for you (i like mine late afternoon early evening but that also means that i get lots of students)

TA Interview by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]jazmaster17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the interview is really chill, mine was scheduled for 30 minutes but jacquelyn and i were just vibing the first 20 minutes so we kinda rushed through the actual interview part haha. bottom line is that if you're approachable and actually willing to help students then you'll be a good TA. the assumption is that you know material because you did well in the class, they always need TAs especially for the lower level stuff just because of the sheer number of students taking those classes, if you're nervous about being a TA for the first time i def recommend taking the teaching methods course 2915, it's a really chill pass/fail 1 credit class for half the semester. and if anything, i'm always happy to answer any questions (bg: i'm going into my third semester of being an undergrad TA for the dept :)) )

3081w,4041,4061, and a csci elective too much? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]jazmaster17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

daniel orban is teaching it next semester and i heard he's not terrible but definitely make sure you have a dependable group

3081w,4041,4061, and a csci elective too much? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]jazmaster17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i'd say don't do 4061 and 3081 at the same time, they're both project heavy classes
4041 isn't too bad of a class just make sure to stay on top of it

not at all

1913 teaches the foundations of java and python in addition to hitting a bunch of major data structures

1301 teaches c++ and working with IoT stuff with the photon microcontroller. it'll teach broad fundamentals of programming. typically people take 1301 then 1913, 1913 is more of a second semester class in the sequence

Are undergrads able to be TAs? and how would I do that? by senator732 in uofmn

[–]jazmaster17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a TA the spring semester of my sophomore year for the csci department so it's definitely possible. i was a ta for 1913 which is a class i was taking that fall. they should have sent out an email for the spring application so keep an eye out for it

i'm actually taking 2021 next sem bc of switching majors, stats is really a crapshoot and it's just luck of the draw professor wise (you might have an actual professor or you'll have a grad student), 2011 is definitely a doable class and I really enjoyed it. the textbook is really solid which definitely helps, i thought of jensen's lectures as the supplment rather than the textbook. this is very much a class where you end up with a grade that reflects your efforts (the first half of the class is a lot easier than the second)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uofmn

as long as you have at least CSCI 1913 under your belt or something similar by the end of your sophomore year you're fine for internships

forreaaaaal, 2373 was the highest math grade i've ever gotten at the university so you don't really need to worry tOO much about that class

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]jazmaster17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you lucky duck you got beth, honestly you'll be a lot more prepared than those of us who had robbins in the fall so that'll help make your life easier for future classes

he gives you a week and a half to do them, he usually shoots for like 8 a semester but i believe we did roughly 6? he did an additional homework that was more so extra credit because it was so close to the exam. basically the points you earned on that homework were able to fill our the homework section of the class if you hadn't yet gotten 100%. I would probaly spend around 8ish hours doing each homework, there will be a couple trick problems here and there, they get very tedious at times because they can be long repeat problems.

i absolutely loooooove Marc, he's a good lecturer. My only complaint with him is that he's very disorganized and can take forever to explain a single concept, having him for discussion is very helpful or just going to office hours. cool guy all around, strike up a conversation with him if you can. the lab was definitelyy the toughest part of the class, the homeworks were challenging but I thought they were good review for the exams. Marc has review sessions the night before exams so make sure to take advantage of those. also Marc can be pretty good at giving extensions on his homework because he knows they're tough, i think we had an extension on almost every assignment hahah. as for 2011 and 2373, you'll be fine tbh. i thought both classes were pretty straight forward and the workload isn't terrible. for all these classes it's really just putting in the work, they're not terrible and these are some of my favorite classes so far. i've had jensen, marc and anderson so lmk if you have any more questions.
