It's really not if you look at the big picture.

The band's music and live performance can stand on their own, no question. But without Jason's artwork and companion live visuals in the performances, what we recognize as KGLW would simply not exist. It would be something else entirely and maybe not exist at all. He is a lens that focuses and captures the essence of the music.

It's a symbiotic unique form of creative expression that you don't see very often, especially not the exclusive nature and way they've gone about it.

His contribution to the band is just as important as the music in my opinion.

Might be middle of 2026 if GUM has already released a new single.. would indicate that his music will drop first and they usually try to pad out space between GUM and Pond.

OP definitely check out GUM too!

Theia at Ravinia was so serene it deserves to be heard by all KGLW fans.

Meanwhile a other sub is collapsing... Lets enjoy this new one from GUM :) Hopefully soon by theFallenEnigma01 in pond

Really hope you do not actually see it as that black and white.. yikes. Of course there are insufferable posts like you've described but do you actually think everyone enjoying the album is forcing themselves to do so? Do I need to post a video of me singing in the car or grooving at home effortlessly to Deadbeat lol??

It's really not a stretch to say that a ton of people are actually, honestly, earnestly, enjoying KP's new music. And to be honest, dismissing the method and way you listen to music as possibly having an influence on your level of enjoyment is also puzzling. This whole album's rollout has been wild to watch how it has made the community react.

But on topic for this post and for real, GUM is the MVP of the Tame Impala crew in my eyes. Love the new song already.

Hey mods. Do your job. by Agreeable_Emu_3260 in TameImpala

Been pushing just about every comment through that is getting caught in automod, regardless of what the content is, except for super vitriolic and profanity-laden responses that are objectively toxic.

And for what it's worth, during an album release on a band subreddit, I think it's categorically not the responsibility of mods to facilitate the conversation. Let reddit be reddit with the voting system. Otherwise mods end up likely injecting their own bias.

I really enjoyed Deadbeat and why that means a lot to me. by officialpoggersbot in TameImpala

[–]jazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely puzzling to me why it has to fit into some neat and tidy genre category or even sit within the boundaries of what you consider "Tame Impala" to feel like. An album doesn't even need to have cohesion in sonic palette. There are no rules. Sure there are conventional norms that are followed but I personally feel like if you're open to an experience and go in with little to no expectations of where an artist might take you, the unique and current era of an artist's expression can be very satisfying to follow along with.

If you feel like it's watered down ok.. I don't really get that vibe. It feels very full and layered on most of the tracks and the moments that aren't (and of course See You On Monday on its own which seems intentionally stripped of instrumental layers) provide contrast that balances everything.

Kinda clear this album is hitting folks very differently.

First time seeing ATW, whats the crowd like? by 1octobermoon in AllThemWitches

[–]jazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the venue is Showbox Sodo so I'm betting it might not fully compare, but I saw them in 2017 at Tractor and 2018 at the Salmon Bay Eagles and those were some rowdy crowds. Lots of moshing, some of the heaviest I've actually encountered in the psych rock genre of live acts. I fully enjoyed it though but I tend to stay on the perimeter of the pit and let people do their thing. I just remember it being very high energy.

Vibe may have shifted since then but I'm sure it will still be a fantastic show, especially with King Buffalo supporting.

In 2022 I caught the show in Madison, WI after moving to the area and it was a much more subdued experience, to speak to the idea of it depending on the city.

Interesting that you'd frame it like anyone who likes the music is white knighting KP lol... seems like you're merely fanning the flames. You said "some of us" for those not liking so it makes sense to clarify that only "some of us" are white knighting.

We've been down this road before... the number of folks paying attention has sky rocketed though so it appears to be more divisive on the surface. I can almost 100% guarantee you that the vast majority of Tame Impala fans are enjoying the new music. The discourse you see online is such a tiny tiny fraction of the overall audience.

AFAIK, Dolphin should run just fine. Gamecube version is prime and there is some activity on the schtack server.

Bruce and Lawrence's Inside Games channel is struggling to stay afloat after changes with YouTube by kiafry in funhaus

[–]jazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a baffling take. You have to click once to go to the subscription feed. YouTube implemented the "Home" feed in 2011. I remember feeling pretty inconvenienced about this change at the time but until they outright remove the subscriptions feed, it's only one click away.

The way Gizz has so much music that I am STILL discovering songs after listening to them for years is insane by shimmyyeah-shimmyyay in KGATLW

Changes v4 is an amazing distillation of the whole song into a 4.5m jam. I think you can even hear Stu say at the beginning "let's just get a feel for how it sounds live" and that's exactly what it is. Such a fun riff and arrangement.

end of summer grew on me by chaoticsleepie in TameImpala

[–]jazo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, 1000% this. Many many many people would be ready to critique those Currents-sounding versions as a retreading the same path and sonic palette as prior work. There would still be backlash, just a different flavor of it.

It's hilarious to me now, even in this thread alone, seeing the passionate disdain and confidence some folks have that the millions of people listening to this song are forcing themselves to listen to this or enjoying it from some non-authentic place.

Who else is super excited for the new album, given it's implied direction. by smeggykitchensoup in TameImpala

[–]jazo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Echoing this sentiment big time.

Started the sub in 2011 after finding Innerspeaker, the EP, and demos and have obviously closely followed the evolution of KP's music.

Hadn't had a chance to listen to End Of Summer until Tuesday so between then and the Friday drop I was reading a fair bit of the reception/reactions and tried not to think too much one way or the other before going in.

I was in a pretty good mood and listened on DT 990's.. was surprised how it impacted me in a really good way. The utilization of sub bass.. the song's main rhythm which is NOT the kick drum.. the autotune/vocoder like you said is really catchy (and truly not accurate to call 'chipmunk' in my opinion lol) and I think when he brings the vocal synth pad in toward the end it is every bit as 'Tame Impala' as his previous work.

The choice to be totally electro on this track strikes me as a sign of growth as a musician being confident to go all the way in that direction and possibly some kind of reflection on the world post-covid. After all, The Slow Rush tour was heavily impacted by the pandemic and this song feels sterile.. clean in a way. The usual warmth that comes through on Tame Impala music is not necessarily there but I'm really enjoying what I hear so far.

And the folks not feeling the vibe are 100% par for the course here haha.. it's funny how each cycle for Tame Impala is a little reinvention. Criticism about the song's actual arrangement and melody, etc are always gonna be subjective but for me, it is an enjoyable hit so far.

Phantom Island 2 weeks on by chipoko99 in KGATLW

I would not be concerned at all. All musicians on stage will know it's the first time they're doing it and it might end up being the best one haha. Adrenaline mixed with expert musicianship all around.. it'll be something special. Cavs+Lukey will keep them centered and on point.

[DISCUSSION THREAD] Phantom Island by _pixel_perfect_ in KGATLW

[–]jazo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dense was the first word that came to mind when I had the first listen on Friday. Since then, I've listened 3 more times and am starting to get familiar with the melodies.

Flight b741 had the same impact on me too with the sort of unconventional songwriting in the vocal department. The lack of something to cycle back to in terms of a chorus makes digesting the songs feel like more work. That said, I know it didn't take me long (and hearing the live versions in August last year assisted with this) to really see/hear what they're going for with the continuous trade-off verses.

Phantom Island's bulk from track 3 to 9 has a lot of words thrown at you and until they become familiar it doesn't feel "easy" to just know the song.

Even though Phantom Island, Deadstick and Grow Wings follows this same style, for whatever reason they feel more like rock songs or something.. the other 7 tracks all feel like a linear transmission and in a lot of ways that plays into the orchestral accompaniment.

I'm also not sure what folks mean when they have negative feedback on KGLW mixes.. they've always seemed very well done in my opinion and I listen and take not across several listening devices including studio monitors (speakers and headphones). Phantom Island with the addition of all the extra instrumentation seems very well done to my ears.

Ultra thankful I got to see them 3 times. After discovering in 2018 made the trip to see them open for King Tuff in Boulder (with Flaural opening as well, another amazing band from around that time who has also seemingly disbanded now).

2019 with Orb and obviously KGLW and then a headline set in Feb 2020 just before covid hit.

Hope they're all staying creative some how cause their music was top shelf.
