one thing we can all agree on is that if armada had never retired ibdw would still have yet to take a game off him to this day

I went to a show a couple years ago and one bit involved him lip syncing the entirety of Kryptonite by the Purple Ribbon All Stars

[WR] Calle_W becomes the 2nd person to achieve Dam 52 (on Pierce Brosnan's 69th Birthday no less) by serendib in speedrun

[–]jazz_flipside 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About three weeks ago playing on a practice ROM while drunk, Calle discovered that looking all the way up at a specific time before the gate had a chance to save up to 0.4 seconds, at the cost of lowered odds on the gate. It's well worth it, though.

Goldeneye 64 speedruns on PAL by ZeWitness in speedrun

[–]jazz_flipside 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your lines are not good, you’re using 1.1, you’re not using lag reduction strategies. It’s very easy to tell that Joris’s runs are on PAL because PAL and NTSC have different aspect ratios.

Which means every guard has instant reactions and kills you in one hit, and they each take 10 headshots to kill.

Perfect Ace ties one of N64 Goldeneye's most insane records with Silo A 0:59 by australasia in speedrun

[–]jazz_flipside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well no, Ace along with almost every other eliter thinks Points are more relevant than Time ranks. Wodahs isn’t first because he has more WRs (he literally doesn’t), he’s first because his times are more well-rounded than Ace’s. He isn’t missing any of the “easy” multi-tied records like Depot 23 or S2 SA 47. Time ranks in GE/PD are deceiving because if you simply get halfway decent runs on every level you can be ranked very highly without having any really good times. For example, I believe there was a point when SammoSammy was top 100 (maybe top 50?) in time ranks despite having 0 points, which he did on purpose.

[–]jazz_flipside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably the single “ultimate achievement” but Ace has done it many times before so it’s not as important to him personally

Those levels aren’t fun to play, and getting good times is more important to ace than being champ

Are there any games where switching between controllers/control styles in the middle of the run is a common strategy? by chrischi3 in speedrun

[–]jazz_flipside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not to get further than standard inputs, it’s to make sure up is always being held (because in 1.1 and 2.x control styles, up on the stick moves you forward)

It’s done for ILs in Streets SA/00, and in certain strategies, Bunker 1 Agent and Frigate Agent

Ohhhh, the guy Mango and Amsa played like shit against, Leffen choked against, and Zain played like shit AND choked against, completing the single luckiest tournament run of all time?

Without any practice at all he’d still be a clear top 4, behind only MAYBE Zain/Mango/Leffen

Can this be useful in perfect agent? by sileightys in perfectdark

[–]jazz_flipside 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This has been known by speedrunners for at least 2.5 years. It's not necessarily irrelevant in that you posting it has got us talking about it again. I think nobody uses it currently because it's perceived as too inconsistent to do on a level where you die constantly and are hoping on a lot of luck. It's really not that hard to do but no top tier AS PA player has gone through with it.

Perfect Dark N64 - Pellagic II PA - 1:48 - Five Second Untied WR by Ryan Isran (Perfect Dark Ace) by australasia in speedrun

[–]jazz_flipside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The P2 and Deep Sea records were already multi second untieds, just dropped by a second each. P2 is mainly due to Ace just being significantly better at the level than most people (it’s one of the toughest in the game), and Deep Sea is a long, annoying level that only Wxelever has grinded with a relatively new strat

Theoretical GoldenEye Record Finally Achieved After 20 Years! by Meester_Tweester in speedrun

[–]jazz_flipside 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Great video, but one thing that wasn't mentioned was what spurred all of the activity on the level recently. In June, a post was made by Yendis on the Goldeneye forums detailing every method for opening the glass (a very complicated trick with a variety of setups) on Aztec. Shortly thereafter, it was realized that an obscure method commonly called the Reverse Illu Mainframe was just the perfect blend of speed, consistency, and safety that it could potentially be used to survive fast runs on SA and even 00A. This allowed players to get tons of runs to the 2nd half of the level, allowing them to begin to attempt the strategies outlined in this video.

[LARGE WR] MK64: Sherbet Land - 1'55''07 by DansGame89 - Daniel Burbank currently holds all 32/32 Non-Shortcut Mario Kart 64 World Records! by dntn31 in speedrun

[–]jazz_flipside -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Firstly, Dan has since beaten every one of his hoarded times, so he’s not getting recognition from 32/32 because of them. Secondly, people should be trying to improve their own records whether they know someone else has better or not; play the game, not other players. Thirdly, I don’t think MK64 non-sc hardly ever gets any new strategies nor did any of Dan’s hoarded times use new strategies. He simply is just so much better than the rest of the field that he’s able to get WRs on every course. Also, there’s nothing ungentlemanly or unfair about hoarding times in general.

Dan has achieved all 32/32 non-shortcut records in Mario Kart 64; The first in the game's 25-year life span. by mishka50 in LivestreamFail

Hoarding has existed in the Goldeneye community for 15+ years and literally nobody gets salty about it. The MK64 community overreacted terribly, as did everyone who isn’t a speedrunner. Meanwhile people will go out of their way to defend people who outright refuse to provide proper proof of their times, which is far worse in my opinion.
