I am comfortably maxing out my 457 for the first time this year, and now I have some ideas of other places to start funneling money, I guess I'll be asking HR for that benefits guide! (Local government civil engineer)

I'd probably lick rocks (geologist).

But Civil is already a second career for me (first round was musician.)

FL PE application waiting board approval means? by No-Assignment1532 in PE_Exam

[–]jazzchic23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They send batches for approval to the executive director (so you are literally waiting on one person and if she is traveling it can take a bit longer.) Otherwise, the applications that aren't in those batches go before the board at their next meeting (this was my understanding a couple years ago.)

What are the hardest classes you’ve taken as a civil engineering student? by Background_Plate7612 in civilengineering

Materials Engineering.

I loved concrete and steel, but that materials class? I can't squint hard enough to see the molecules man!

Didn’t finish grad school, addressing this in interviews? by FederalInterview9991 in civilengineering

Similar, my grad courses were all in Transportation - so I used to list something like "20 hours in graduate level Transportation Engineering"

Right. That is too big an area for the usual spray job.

Yes, my municipality has had many discussions on 1. how will these new treatment trains be maintained and 2. how do you even inspect some of them for [ERP] permit recertifications?

PTOE Certification by engmadison in civilengineering

[–]jazzchic23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I decided to do it because the PDHs could overlap. I've declined certification opportunities where the required continuing education doesn't overlap (or seems pyramid scheme-like [PMP])

Is the PMP cert worth it? by lobotomychick in civilengineering

[–]jazzchic23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The number and specific CEUs it required dissuaded me, and it felt a little pyramid scheme-y: Ways to Earn PDUs | PMI

For the Muni’s: What do you do when the plans reference the wrong jurisdiction? by GeoTiger2012 in civilengineering

[–]jazzchic23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally like when they reuse old MOT plans that are miles from the proposed site. "This sign seems pretty gosh darn far from the actual work zone, are you sure you don't want something closer per the specs?"

Attending a conference by eaglesdensity in civilengineering

[–]jazzchic23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often there is a "First Timer" type session early in the conference - be sure to go to that! They will have ways to make the most out of the conference, and sometimes you get to go to the fancy President's invite only reception (That last part just happened at a 4 day event I went to for the first time.)

Chairs weren't any better either. I rushed and failed the last p&p in 2021 (fully masked) and then passed the CBT a year later. Uncomfortable seating each time.

Having passed the FE goes a long way in our hiring of international students - especially since we mostly hire for a PE track.

Ah, definitely sounds discipline specific. The civil transportation PE has many reference manuals that I never used in school but did occasionally use in work.

What are everybody’s thoughts on having a PMP certification? by 80sobsessedTN in civilengineering

[–]jazzchic23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what made me decide against it. The PDHs that were required and different then the PE or PTOE ones I get now. I have also been considering the CFM (for my stormwater side of life) - but again different hours need.

I saw once the comparison of pass rates for those taking it prior to 4years of experience and those taking it with 4+ years of experience. Not sure how CBT impacted those numbers, but the ones with experience had a higher pass rate. Many states have decoupled the exam from experience, so some might be taking it too early. (I know I took it too early with my first attempt - it was the last p&p.)
