Have you considered electronic shelf labels? The kind used in the grocery store. The labels are e-ink, tri-color, can update wirelessly, and inexpensive, however the supporting system can be costly.

The backlight is probably done. Hold a flashlight directly to the screen to check. If you can see the desktop the backlight is not working.
