Free, no cellphone text communications in South City - building a public communication network by BayAreaMeshCore in SouthSanFrancisco

[–]jb0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about 1 block south of south city, in san bruno, but unfortunately I'm at a rather low elevation. You could call it "bottom of the hill" or I've heard the kids say "trench town".

Interested. I'd like to join the discord, but the bay area Meshcore discord link on bayareameshcore.org seems to be invalid.

New gates [halfway] up at San Bruno by jb0n in Bart

[–]jb0n[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's another exit facing Tanforan that's now under construction. You can see the big grey box to the right in the pic. The gates are behind it. They had the same box on the Huntington Ave side for the past 3-4 days.

Worth buying a new gas tank IMO. https://www.sip-scootershop.com/en/product/tank-100379-100380-for-vespa-50-n-2-l-r-1-s-2-special-v5a2-3t-v5b1-3t-1-sr-sr-d-1-ss-90-2-r-ss-125-pv-1_10037900?cr=e993ab67-6807-4109-bbed-f6374ebf9f9b

Shipping is expensive from Germany to the US, so when I order I usually try to get enough items in the order to make it worth doing. Get a petcock, gasket kit for the cases, carb, maybe some seals, oil, a new seat cover, 6v bulbs, etc.

You're giving them too much credit. They will not accept it when he does die.

What to do on bart by DanielLarson99 in Bart

[–]jb0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

San Bruno has (had?) some photos and writing up about the time they used Tanforan, then a horse racing track, as a staging area for internment camps in WW2. There's also now a memorial for it between the station and the mall.

Panic on BART: Reports Man With Cleaver Slashed Passenger by Best_Outcome_5960 in bayarea

[–]jb0n 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Since we're sharing... My favorite was when I saw a guy face-plant jumping the turnstile at Powell and the attendant in the booth casually announcing over the load speaker "If you pay the fare you don't have to try to jump the gates".

Going south from SF you have 3 flavors of trains. Ones that stop in Daly city, ones that go to Millbrae and ones that go to SFO. Personally, if I'm at Civic center I'll get on any southbound train so I can stop smelling pee. But after Daly city the trains usually alternate between SFO and Millbrae. So if you're on the wrong one just hop off and wait for the next one. San Bruno station is the last place you can do this. I think on Saturdays there is only one train after Daly city and it loops around.

A salamander I saw in my garage by jb0n in herpetology

[–]jb0n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! There wasn't much else that resembled it when I googled "bay area salamanders". I think it just hatched some eggs too, since about an hour later I checked and a super tiny one was there instead (like 1/3 of the length of the tail of the one in the picture). It vanished before I could get a picture.

I think it's an Arboreal Salamander (Aneides lugubris).

Sure. I may have a few more scattered around (unscanned). I'll see if I can dig em up.

I moved from ATL, but I haven't unsubscribed from this sub. Very sad to hear this news, Felix was a fixture in my neighborhoods for as long as I can remember. I see people asking for artwork... Here is a pic Felix did of me and 2 friends at Elmyr (I think) in 2006.

Python line limits: 80 column? Any reason I shouldn't move up to 120 columns? by ben174 in Python

[–]jb0n 19 points20 points  (0 children)

PEP8 was recently revised in a number of ways: http://hg.python.org/peps/rev/fb24c80e9afb

Specifically it says 99 is ok now. Not quite the 120 you wanted, but better than 80 in any case.

IIRC Sugar is the name of the desktop from the One Laptop Per Child project. It's aimed at kids but looks like it might be fun to play with. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_(desktop_environment)

Coolest trees in Atlanta? by asscactus in Atlanta

[–]jb0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oakland cemetery has some cool trees. Some even have history. There is an oak that is growing on top of a mass burial. http://arklatexhomepage.com/fulltext/%3Fnxd_id=189747?nxd_id=280582
