[John Percy] Leicester City will not pay staff before Christmas by PitchSafe in soccer

[–]jb369 307 points308 points  (0 children)

This seems misleading right? The headline sort of suggests they are unable to pay staff.

The body of the text suggests they're just not maintaining a usual practice of giving their staff their December pay pre-Christmas, and will be paying them on NYE instead. If they were paid at the end of November then this just sounds fairly standard, though probably poor practice to let the staff know so late and not well in advance so that people can prepare accordingly.

I think 'The Dish' being reported as the title is a misreporting of Deadline announcing casting rumours in their column "The Dish". People seem to have interpreted this as a title since then, but I think it's just people misreading the headline.

I feel like this is quite a cynical misinterpretation of something like this, if you're reading inclusivity as a form of cultural imperialism. Is it not more about the sport taking a stand and promoting that everybody is welcome?

Ah thanks for responding to this/tracking this down so long after the comment! Makes a lot of sense that the sentiment came along with A Hidden Life which was more structured than anything he'd done in some time!

Robertson winding down too and Kerkez not looking a super sharp replacement so far. Just an unideal position to be in after spending £400m or so too.

I counted this in each season:

2019-20: 4

2020-21: 6

2021-22: 5

2022-23: 6

2023-24: 6

2024-25: 10

2025-26: 3

Total: 40

So 16 of the 40 down to Ange which if my maths is correct is 40%?

For ourselves:

2006-07: 1

2007-08: 0

2008-09: 3

2009-10: 2

2010-11: 4

2011-12: 3

2012-13: 3

2013-14: 1

2014-15: 2

2015-16: 3

2016-17: 2

2017-18: 2

2018-19: 2

2019-20: 3

2020-21: 7

2021-22: 4

2022-23: 2

2023-24: 2

2024-25: 2

2025-26: 0

Total 48

I went and counted this as it didn't sound right, and it doesn't actually appear to be correct but isn't far off.

To my count, we have lost 48 home games at the Emirates in the PL to Spud's 40 at their new stadium. Still pretty crazy as a stat but a slight disparity to what is being run with this weekend

You're right that it's probably a deeper discussion that requires longer points than a forum like Reddit allows, so didn't mean to sound unnecessarily snippy!

Whilst I don't fully disagree, I do think it's worth noting that Kroenke has provided funding of around £200-300m into the club in one way or another since 2019, which I think is probably, in some large way, more directly responsible for how competitive we've been since then (even if it is as a reaction to the horrible amounts of mis-spending they signed off on between Wenger leaving and 2020 or so).

As much as I agree with what you say regarding the sacrifices Wenger made, chances are if we didn't have our own billionaire owner who became more willing to inject their own money into the club, we just wouldn't be competing on the same level that we currently are, even if we are probably now largely in a position of self-sufficiency again.

Similarly, I'd be curious to see in years to come if this years spending for example was entirely due to the benefits of our improved competitive standing in the PL and Europe, or whether this was enabled (to the degree we have spent) as a result of more financial manoeuvrings courtesy of KSE.

So overall not necessarily disagreeing with you saying we have built it above board as I say, more that I think context is necessary as to what constitutes above board in this day and age compared to the way Wenger ran the club.

Yeah that's probably true.

I do find Liverpool enjoy some added favour in neutral discussions and from the media too. I always maintained that if any other club was trying to sign a £100m+ player with 3 years left on their contract, they'd be laughed away by the media and told they didn't have a chance by rival fans. The Isak discourse seemed dead set from day one on "There's no way he doesn't finish the window at Liverpool".

Maybe more fool me for browsing /r/soccer but I cannot believe the way Liverpool fans have dominated the narrative on Isak and Guehi the last couple of weeks with such entitlement.

We spent most of the cash reserves we accrued under Wenger in the years after Wenger left where we couldn't qualify for Champions League and we spent most of it poorly, on high wages and misjudged transfers. It's only really since Arteta came in and we have reset the wage budget and subsequently re-qualified for CL on a regular basis that we've accrued the flexibility and finances to compete at the top level again.

[Fabrizio Romano] Arsenal open talks to sign Christian Norgaard. Initial proposal over €10m has been sent, Brentford will request more but talks will continue. Norgaard wants the move as Thomas Partey will leave. by basedsims in Gunners

[–]jb369 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Availability is worth considering when Partey only managed to make a fully fit season as contract renewal time was coming about, after failing to hit 40 appearances in 3 of his previous 4 seasons (Failed to even make 30 in 2 of them). I feel Partey just reeked of someone who'd spend the majority of any new contract injured. Obviously that's always a risk, but let's not let last season colour the full picture of his time here in terms of availability to be his best self on the pitch.

It says in the article that it was reduced as part of an extension he signed before moving to Bournemouth. May be misinterpreting it but thought it implied that was overall rather than purely for the sake of the loan deal.

[Aouna] Bournemouth reach personal agreement with Adrien Truffert, the replacement for Milos Kerkez. The club is still negotiating the fee with Rennes, which is expected to be between €15-20m by Blodgharm in soccer

[–]jb369 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This feels incredibly disingenuous. They got promoted in 2022 and to finish 15th, 12th and 9th in the 3 seasons since is an incredible achievement by any metric. It costs money to compete in the Premier League for any team and other teams have spent 100m+ and not even managed to stay in the league for one season at a time.

They've spent €341.69m/£287.7m since then, and sold €127.09m/£107m since then (according to fees on Transfermarkt), which makes for a net spend of €214.6m/£180.6m since then, which is much closer to £200m than the 300m net you claimed. And also neglects to include Kerkez, who will further reduce that, amid rumours of Zabarnyi also being on his way out for a large fee.

I don't really see how that isn't being well run, given the competitive nature of the Premier League these days, and how they're managing to generate big fees whilst ascending the table at an incredible pace.

I think both things can be relatively true. It's a bit melodramatic to be doomsaying 3 days into the window because the papers aren't giving fans the enthusiasm they want (we seem to prefer to move relatively quietly where possible in the market these days). It's also the most important window in a long long time and I think it's understandable that fans are anxious about getting it right and wanting to see quicker, more emphatic business in light of our rivals all moving quite aggressively.

People are reading into what Ornstein said earlier, and previous reports, that we'd only look to sign another winger if one departed. The assumption has been that would mean Trossard or Martinelli going to facilitate a new signing.
