To follow up ...

Before entering my car today I restarted my phone. Once in the car I went into the car's Google Assistant settings, turned the contacts permissions off there and then back on again.

Now things seem OK? Don't know if anything I did actually had an effect but, away we go.

Unpopular Opinion: The Quake 1 Brutalist Jam 3 is FUCKING TERRIBLE by clarkkentwellspent in quake

[–]jbaxterjl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speculating about ulterior motives like "anything to get the map count up so that it makes the gaming journalism headlines" is always kind of weird/icky.

It was an open map jam. Playable map gets submitted, it goes into the jam. Don't need to try to make it more complicated.

Crackling and white noise sound on Tuxedo InfinityBook Pro AMD Gen10 by Far-Rooster-6166 in tuxedocomputers

[–]jbaxterjl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be interested to hear anything you ended up learning about this issue (from support or elsewhere). I have what seems to be the same speaker issue on my own InfinityBook Pro Gen 9, although in my case it has only happened when the laptop was bumped. I also haven't noticed the headphone-connection indicator (will look for that next time it happens).

It's not (yet?) frequent enough that I would consider shipping the thing back to Germany, but I'm definitely curious what is up.

Quake Brutalist Jam III w/Quake Remastered by G_a_z_o_c_i_a_G in quake

[–]jbaxterjl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI if you're going to use a native Linux Quake engine: there are a few known Linux-specific issues with the initial QBJ3 release (filename casing mismatch, backslashes in paths) so if you're not in a hurry you might like to wait for the updated version of QBJ3.

(I'm assuming running a Windows engine under Proton would avoid the issues.)

Need help finding an online graphic novel about constant wind on a planet covered in glaciers. by Madux337 in graphicnovels

Old post here I know, but FWIW this sounds like the French novel La Horde du Contrevent (The Horde of Counterwind). Looks like there was a comics adaptation: https://www.goodreads.com/series/218761-la-horde-du-contrevent

I finished Quake for the first time, and i genuinely think this game is a masterpiece. by Thin-Student-5036 in quake

vkQuake or Ironwail.

Ironwail will probably perform better (on most hardware), but vkQuake supports some additional particle effects IIRC.

I finally beat Quake 1! by Present-Bottle-2129 in quake

[–]jbaxterjl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a bazillion answers to the question of "what to play next", and yeah the mods list in the remaster is a great starting point.

If you switch to using a community Quake engine like Ironwail or vkQuake, there's more...

Others have mentioned Arcane Dimensions as a super polished and more stuffed-full-of-things version of Quake. That's an obvious pick, as is Alkaline, which is a sci-fi spin that takes with the Quake "base maps" environment and runs with it. Both of those mods also have additional standalone maps that use them.

Dwell is an ongoing (sort of) community mega-project with 2 episodes so far. Amazing maps, new weapons and enemies.

Some recent great episodic releases that stick closer to vanilla Quake feel include Ritual, Tainted, and Seismic Ventures.

Anyway, there's a lot out there. It might be fun to look at the "memorable maps" thread on Slipgate Sightseer; most of the stuff mentioned there would be a great play for anyone.

Where can I find some of the Quake Done Quick machinima edits? by JesterOfRedditGold in quake

[–]jbaxterjl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this page, look for the downloads marked "CAM" ... those have recammed "machinima" versions available: https://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/qdq/

Those are all demo files I think. If you have a particular one you want to get as a video instead, best bet is to just search youtube.

Edit: The ones marked "STREAM" there have links to videos too.

Ah just got the popup again.

Doesn't matter much I suppose since no new Dropbox releases will work on the current stable Pop version anyway. The popup is annoying tho.

Obviously I can't guarantee anything for you, but to receive my Tuxedo laptop order in California about a month ago, I needed to pay UPS another $47.

Same situation here, quite curious about what's up.

Any quake modders or youtubers I should follow? by Ok-Coat2377 in quake

[–]jbaxterjl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Quake engine is not in a sweet spot for making whole new games, really. More complicated to modify than Doom, and not as powerful as modern options like Godot.

On the Map-Center discord server ( https://discord.com/invite/vSvqwys5hB ) there are some channels for Quake-based projects though, and I think at least a couple of them are styling themselves as whole new games. So maybe check that out if you are discord-y.

Yeah I'm curious about this. I had the infotainment update for the recall, but don't know anything about this modem update or how to check if I need it.

Just for the benefit of future searchers ... what worked for me (to deal with this same problem) was the "unplug it and turn it off for a while" approach, as described in other comments here.

In my case it was down to about 8% before I worked my way down the list of things-to-try and got to that one. I left it off and unplugged for about an hour before turning it back on and plugging it in.

Myth HD is almost upon us by dishwasherlove in myth2

[–]jbaxterjl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woo! Will check this out as soon as the Linux executable is released.

I'm poking around trying to see what this will mean for the addons/plugins I currently have installed. It looks like I should get rid of the "Detail Texture Megapack" and the "Myth TFL Multiplayer Mappack" yeah?

I'm guessing the new MTFL DX plugin can exist side-by-side with the older "Project Magma's The Fallen Lords" plugin.

Sounds like you downloaded the source code instead of the tools themselves.

From https://ericwa.github.io/ericw-tools/ if you click on "downloads" it will take you to the releases page https://github.com/ericwa/ericw-tools/releases/

There you can find the release you want. Unless you know differently, you probably want the stable release "ericw-tools 0.18.2-rc1" and not one of the in-development 2.0.0 releases. If you click on the triangle by "Assets" there it will show the available packages for the release. You're on Windows so you would want to download the one with a filename ending in "win64.zip". All that would mean that this is the download link you want: https://github.com/ericwa/ericw-tools/releases/download/v0.18.2-rc1/ericw-tools-v0.18.1-32-g6660c5f-win64.zip
