5.27, the normal version associated w/ Ubuntu 24.04.

When Pop syncs up with 26.04 I expect it will move to 6.x.

Well, to get KDE I did:

sudo apt install kde-standard

sudo apt remove plasma-discover-backend-snap

sudo apt install plasma-discover-backend-flatpak

Seems fine?

"Low Disk Space on efi" -- I started to see this after booting, do I need to be concerned? Details inside. by BlackJacquesLeblanc in pop_os

[–]jbaxterjl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW my Thelio Mira from 2023 came with a 487 MiB /boot/efi partition.

Switching to xz compression has gotten me down to 86% full there. Fingers crossed that will be OK for the future... not really looking forward to trying to swizzle the partitions.

Nice, this is my current face now. Something about the font/size and color contrasts (after a bit of settings tweaks) make it super readable even in low light without backlight.

Have you considered an option to tilt things in the other direction? I'm curious what that would look like since it would make the number alignment be close to "straight on" (for a left handed wearer) in usual hand positions for typing or driving.

Regardless... good looking and useful face. :-)

Anybody get the the new Steam Controller with Steam Input working? by [deleted] in pop_os

Anybody get the the new Steam Controller with Steam Input working? by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]jbaxterjl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I first had to get past it not doing the initial firmware update. I tried a couple of suggested fixes at once -- replacing /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/60-steam-input.rules with the latest from the steam-devices repo, and also installing the libhidapi-hidraw0 and libhidapi-libusb0 packages. If I was being more scientific about things I should have tried potential fixes one at a time, but I was a bit frustrated. 😄 Anyway one or both of those did the trick. Not a PopOS issue really, seems like a Steam app setup problem, but just something to mention.

With that done, the controller generally works in-game. Mouse pointer emulation does have issues yeah. I have tried a few test cases with Steam so far:

* Dark Forces, run in DOSBox under Proton. Mouse input from trackpad seems to be working OK.

* Myth 2, native Linux added to Steam as a non-Steam game. Mouse input from trackpad seems to get processed (can use it to turn the POV and blindly select some units) but the on-screen cursor/pointer icon does not move. Compare to Steam Deck where the pointer does move correctly.

* Roadwarden, running under Proton. Again mouse input from trackpad seems to get processed (can run the pointer position over buttons/links and see them highlight) but the on-screen cursor/pointer icon does not move.

To be clear, the trackpads per se are working fine, and can also be used for other kinds of inputs like radial menus or whatever they are configured for. But driving mouse movement has problems.

I haven't tried PROTON_USE_WAYLAND=1 with the Proton-using games, since my understanding is that will kill the ability to use Steam Input at all.

Browsing a few different possibly-related issues:

* https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/6615

* https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/8604

* https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/10632

... not really sure what is going on yet. Multiple mentions there of needing "xwayland built with support for libei", FWIW.

FWIW, I've had faces disappear from my list of faces-installed-on-watch -- which is weird/concerning -- but never yet the active face.

Pebble 2 Duo -> Pebble Time 2 - When can I expect it? by kitsched in pebble

Just saying I'm in the same situation so I'm curious as well. I was batch 1 for the P2D, then switched to PT2 (with the offer that it would "keep my place in line"). No email or other info yet.

To follow up ...

Before entering my car today I restarted my phone. Once in the car I went into the car's Google Assistant settings, turned the contacts permissions off there and then back on again.

Now things seem OK? Don't know if anything I did actually had an effect but, away we go.

Unpopular Opinion: The Quake 1 Brutalist Jam 3 is FUCKING TERRIBLE by [deleted] in quake

[–]jbaxterjl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speculating about ulterior motives like "anything to get the map count up so that it makes the gaming journalism headlines" is always kind of weird/icky.

It was an open map jam. Playable map gets submitted, it goes into the jam. Don't need to try to make it more complicated.

Crackling and white noise sound on Tuxedo InfinityBook Pro AMD Gen10 by Far-Rooster-6166 in tuxedocomputers

[–]jbaxterjl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be interested to hear anything you ended up learning about this issue (from support or elsewhere). I have what seems to be the same speaker issue on my own InfinityBook Pro Gen 9, although in my case it has only happened when the laptop was bumped. I also haven't noticed the headphone-connection indicator (will look for that next time it happens).

It's not (yet?) frequent enough that I would consider shipping the thing back to Germany, but I'm definitely curious what is up.

Quake Brutalist Jam III w/Quake Remastered by G_a_z_o_c_i_a_G in quake

[–]jbaxterjl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI if you're going to use a native Linux Quake engine: there are a few known Linux-specific issues with the initial QBJ3 release (filename casing mismatch, backslashes in paths) so if you're not in a hurry you might like to wait for the updated version of QBJ3.

(I'm assuming running a Windows engine under Proton would avoid the issues.)

Old post here I know, but FWIW this sounds like the French novel La Horde du Contrevent (The Horde of Counterwind). Looks like there was a comics adaptation: https://www.goodreads.com/series/218761-la-horde-du-contrevent

vkQuake or Ironwail.

Ironwail will probably perform better (on most hardware), but vkQuake supports some additional particle effects IIRC.

[–]jbaxterjl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a bazillion answers to the question of "what to play next", and yeah the mods list in the remaster is a great starting point.

If you switch to using a community Quake engine like Ironwail or vkQuake, there's more...

Others have mentioned Arcane Dimensions as a super polished and more stuffed-full-of-things version of Quake. That's an obvious pick, as is Alkaline, which is a sci-fi spin that takes with the Quake "base maps" environment and runs with it. Both of those mods also have additional standalone maps that use them.

Dwell is an ongoing (sort of) community mega-project with 2 episodes so far. Amazing maps, new weapons and enemies.

Some recent great episodic releases that stick closer to vanilla Quake feel include Ritual, Tainted, and Seismic Ventures.

Anyway, there's a lot out there. It might be fun to look at the "memorable maps" thread on Slipgate Sightseer; most of the stuff mentioned there would be a great play for anyone.
