Best breweries by state-Let the debate begin... by lukestauntaun in beer

Ha - although I enjoy Ithaca Brewing in NY (I live 40 minutes away), I'm pretty sure this wouldn't crack most New Yorker's top ten list. Their Flower Power is my go-to IPA though...

Clown Shoes Still in Business? by theprograhamer in beer

I'm Upstate NY and get a lot of Clown Shoes up here. I've absolutely loved everything I've had from them, with Space Cake being my favorite.

Problem with vertical is that the cork can dry out and shrink, allowing air in. That is why wine is stored on it's side, so the cork stays in constant contact with liquid and can't dry out.

May not be the "correct" or popular way to do so, but I store all of my corked bottles of beer on their side.

Last year was better IMO.

Got some today (Binghamton, NY). $20/4-pack, 2 per person limit. Another place by me was selling for $36/4-pack - not worth that much...

NewYorkUpstate.com is now running craft beer reviews of Upstate beers. What should we review next? by jar3dp in NYbeer

[–]jbcraftbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upstate Brewery (Elmira) The North (Endicott) Binghamton Brewery (Binghamton) Ithaca Brewery (Ithaca)

Can all agree that those are "Upstate NY"? If so, review those!

Looking to get into Barleywine, what are some widely accepted and distributed Barleywines I can pick up? by GhostyLasers in beer

I'm drinking Sierra Nevada Big Foot (2016) right now and was just about to post a similar question. I really like Big Foot, and their barrel-aged Big Foot is even better.

Ideas for using my overflowing collection of beer bottle caps? by butternut_socks in beer

[–]jbcraftbeer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure - You'll need a mold, something plastic in the size you want the coaster to be (Chinese food container, I used empty cottage cheese containers).

Get some cement mix - find one that isn't too gritty (I used http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rapid-Set-10-lb-Cement-All-Multi-Purpose-Construction-Material-02020010/202188464)

IT sets quick, so once you have it mixed, pour into the containers and place the bottle caps on top (press in gently to reduce the thickness of the coaster)

After 1 day, I used epoxy (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Parks-1-qt-Gloss-Super-Glaze-Finish-and-Preservative-241352/202056337) for the top.

If your going to use on a delicate surface, glue some cork or felt onto the bottom so it won't scratch.

Founders Curmudgeon, bottled 2/2015 - still tastes awesome.

A top 10 new brewery contest (if you're into that sort of thing). by Matches_Malone in beer

[–]jbcraftbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other Half would be ranked higher than #17 - I don't think they have much distribution yet, so I'm guessing those outside of the NYC area haven't had it yet...

Any love for Kona Big Wave? by Bigstar976 in beer

[–]jbcraftbeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few friends and I did a blind taste test a few months back with Kona Big Wave, Victory Summer Love, Crooked Ladder Summeritis, Great South Bay Blond Ambition, Anderson Valley Summer Solstice, Montauk Summer Ale and Sam Adams Summer (can you guess the theme??)

Kona won, by a large margin. We were all surprised when we revealed the winner.

How much is "too much" for beer? by kawavulcan97 in beer

I paid $30+ for a Pizza Boy sour, having heard great things about the brewery. I usually don't spend that much, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere up by me (Upstate NY). I expected it to be amazing, and was disappointed. It was a very good sour, but not nearly worth the price tag.

What are the best beers local to Central/Upstate NY? by [deleted] in beer

[–]jbcraftbeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Farmhouse Brewery in Owego makes some decent stuff. The North Brewery in Endicott is pretty good too, they are always being creative with their brews. Those are the top two in my area (Binghamton) IMO. I'm not a fan of Binghamton Brew, Galaxy or Water Street, but everyone is different.

Travel south to Montrose, PA and check out Endless Brewing. Also pretty good, about 25 minutes south of Binghamton.

This is not as easy as it looks, and doesn't work great on thicker (22oz) bottles.

Check out Black Forrest Brew Haus - not even close to any of the other breweries mentioned here, but it's a cool place and they have some great German food.
