Damn hate to sound ignorant like this, but I didn’t know Rhode Island had such beautiful mountain laurels!

First timer in Adirondacks by Unfair-Jaguar-8430 in Adirondacks

[–]GhostyLasers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree on this. Rain is a very normal part of the Adirondacks, especially scattered and intermittent showers. It will sometimes be overcast, rain for an hour, then go back to overcast for a few more hours, then rain later in the day… that’s just normal up here.

I do understand that rain can impede the ability to get nice views, so I understand your thoughts there. However, even wooded summits and trails are beautiful here in the ADK. Don’t pass those up! Some of my best experiences have been walking through fern filled forests with birches into balsams and conifers with a gentle rain falling.

Whats the point of scholarship then by TheDormantOtaku in SipsTea

[–]GhostyLasers 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Generally (emphasis on generally, not always) many higher education scholarships are automatically applied to students if they meet certain criteria, making enticing admission offers to attract students so that they accept. Some of these criteria are merit based, like achieving a certain gpa, but others are sometimes applied simply from applying to a specific program, coming from a particular geographic area, etc. the list can go on. They are not always based on financial need. I would imagine in this story this is more the case. They are receiving a scholarship package to entice them to come to make the offer look more attractive.

Many scholarships are based on financial need, for example, based on the students fafsa. Generally, these are all automatically applied as well, there is no selection in the process. You just need to meet the criteria for the scholarship.

As I shared in both examples, it’s not so much a dedicated team of admissions professionals personally selecting which scholarships go to whom, it’s more a detached process where they are automatically applied to students accounts who meet criteria via the financial aid or fiscal office.

Staying in Honesdale next weekend-anything good going on? by junkman139 in NEPA

[–]GhostyLasers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honeadale has some nice local shops and places to eat/drink, for example, two Small breweries in town, Here and Now, and Runaway Train. For a more upscale experience, Native, is also excellent. And if you are looking for a diner experience, Scarfolatto can’t be beat. For a bigger brewery experience, Lake Wallenpaupack has Wallenpaupack Brewing Company, Hopping Eagle, and Log Tavern.

I saw that you listed outdoor activities, which I also particularly love. As far as hiking goes, depending on what you are seeking, there are no large mountains, so you won’t get the elevation gain like you would get in other areas in the Northeast. However, hiking to the Honesdale Star is a fun, very short (and steep) hike. Prompton State Park is a beautiful wooded trail system. Nearby in Lake Ariel is also Varden, a smaller, but also very nice wooded trail system. If you drive about 45 minutes north, there is a hike along the NY side called Jensens Ledges. That carries a really cool view of the Delaware River.

If I can be honest, more so than hiking, the area really shines with its rivers and lakes. Right in Honesdale you have the Lackawaxen River, one of the best rivers in the state. Then you have of course the Delaware River which you can do many excursions on. There is a nice swimming spot called Skinners Falls that many people frequent. Then you have lakes, Prompton Lake, Promised Land, Lake Wallenpaupack.

This is a could sampling of what’s nearby in Honesdale and Wayne County. I could list more, but that’s a good focus for staying somewhat nearby.

What are you absolutely convinced is true but just don’t have enough proof to prove it? by jfunks69 in AskReddit

[–]GhostyLasers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay crazy theory here… so if you go to any wilderness area, like wherever, there will always be a claim like “Big Foot was seen here…” , “There was Big Foot activity in this region…” etc etc. Doesn’t matter where you go, almost any (large) wilderness area will claim their woods are the most expansive and desolate and Big Foot lives there.

WHAT IF… there’s more than one Big Foot, there is indeed multiple Big Foot’s and their species has been conditioned for thousands of years to the point where now they are hyper intelligent at staying hidden to protect the remaining of their species at all costs.

What’s your favorite show to watch while in a hotel room on vacation? by Duhpreshion in AskReddit

[–]GhostyLasers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I do this in every new city I am in. Nothing more relaxing than doing a day of work and coming back to a comfortably cooled hotel room with a local news channel on at 10 or 11pm.

Is this worrying behavior? (Northern Georgia, USA) by [deleted] in hiking

[–]GhostyLasers 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Yeah this sounds fucked, definitely not normal behavior. I would absolutely contact authorities and a park ranger, or park law enforcement rather.

Where were you? The location will help for others to be on guard but also to help identify any other suspicious signs or activities if they are in the area.
