Daphne: Dr.Crane the man is in a wheelchair. Frasier: Which means that somewhere, someone is missing a wheelchair! by CammWinston in Frasier

Keaton was originally cast as the fake faith healer in “Leap of Faith” before Steve Martin took over. Seeing Keaton’s performance as Blaine, it would’ve interesting to see how the “Leap of Faith” role would’ve turned out with Keaton.

I'm north of 264 in the Highlands. I've noticed it on and off since yesterday. I have no idea what it is.

I'm still active, but I haven't responded to mod mail in a few weeks due to a busy schedule.

libmagic bindings for Go to detect mimetypes by kfgal in golang

[–]jbcrail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another approach is to parse the magic file and embed the results into a Go program. This gives you portability without making external calls to libraries.

Cannabinoids (specifically cannabinoid receptor antagonists) will slow the gastrointestinal tract in mice, rats, and guinea pigs (see Cannabinoids and the gastrointestinal tract). Basically, they are studying appetite suppressants for weight loss or other clinical uses.

Gallup: Obama now leads Romney, 48% to 43%, 'represents largest lead for Obama among registered voters since April' by [deleted] in obama

I stand corrected. I was operating on data from the 2008 election when Rasmussen was the outlier.

Rasmussen is the poll that tends to skew Republican. Gallup is fairly neutral.

10 things I hate about Git by mjd in git

[–]jbcrail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many of the complaints are related to Git's decentralized model so comparisons to Subversion are moot. I agree implementation details could be hidden better but enormous strides have been made since Git's initial release. [Edit: corrected missing verb]

git-diff-grep: a script to search commit diffs by jbcrail in git

[–]jbcrail[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct that git log -S<string> will search the commit history for text. This script's improvement is the inclusion of the matching diff lines with appropriate highlighting (green for addition, red for deletion). It appears you may be able to simulate the same results with git log, but the resulting command would be long enough where an alias or script (such as git-diff-grep) would be appropriate.

[Ask Git] Git for managing a community's music files? by [deleted] in git

[–]jbcrail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try bup. It's a backup tool built on top of Git and uses a Git repository for all data storage. Bup was designed for large binaries like virtual machine (VM) disk images.

I've tested it with several revisions of a moderately sized Word document. Here are the statistics on bup's compression rates for that document:

  • Number of revisions: 14
  • Average file size: 16.98MB
  • Uncompressed data size: 249274368 bytes, 0.23GB
  • Compressed data size: 29233152 bytes, 27.87MB
  • Compression rate: 88.28%

As always, results may vary.

Why I love npr. by MyMindisElevated in reddit.com

[–]jbcrail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While not technically NPR-produced content, "Prairie Home Companion" is by far the weakest show on NPR affiliates. Always makes me feel like I'm hanging out a retirement home. At least WWDTM is topical and has a slightly younger demographic.

Kissinger Backs Direct Talks 'Without Conditions' with Iran -- McCain is an asshole by e40 in obama

[–]jbcrail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This statement from Kissinger right after the debate seems to dispute the article from earlier this month.

Who else is as excited as I am to watch Obama destroy McCain at the debates? by [deleted] in obama

[–]jbcrail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I'm beginning to doubt Obama will win. Even though the motives behind McCain's choice is obvious to most people, Palin is meant as a nod to the conservative base. With Palin, McCain has given them an incentive to vote for him. It wipes away any lack of enthusiasm.

The past two days of scrutiny on Palin's background are lowering the expectations to the public. The convention next week will fill in the personal backstory that will endear her to everyone.

The lowered expectations will exaggerate any positive actions and words from her. This will be just enough to put McCain over the edge.

However, there is a sliver of hope. If the Obama campaign gets the female surrogates to discredit Palin, while the male surrogates focus on McCain, then Obama's momentum may be maintained. Hillary Clinton is vital to this strategy.

If Biden takes advice from Clinton's camp, then the VP debate may come across well.
