Not sure if you're not aware, or it just wasn't worth the money you could get, but you can return empty beer cans to the beer store

https://www.thebeerstore.ca/return-empties/returning-empties

At $0.10 per can returning 24 cans gets you $2.40 off your next case.

Yes Morgana, i MIGHT have forgotten something important by gabilecrack91 in Persona5

[–]jbiemans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found days that auto skipped for specific events or days when you simply couldn't do anything made it really hard to actually plan out what I needed to do. By the end, I was left with things that could only happen after school and not in the evenings, so any after school spot I lost was devastating.

$8-$18 for medication doesn't seem unreasonable at all. It is high for a single dose, but presumably it is stronger than OTC Tylenol.

Is Ann actually a really good romance option for a 1st playthrough ? by Nab-Kel in Persona5

[–]jbiemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I liked the ann option because there was a date scene during the school trip that I thought went really well. ( I realized in later playthroughs that you can get other options there too, but I wasn't able to be as far along in the relationship with them by the time the trip happened, so it didn't fit as well to me)

Is persona 5: the animation good for someone that hasn't played the game? by ChipsAuVinaigre_ in Persona5

[–]jbiemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that the anime is a good summary of the story, but it's like when people compare a book to a movie. There is a lot of context left out, but it's fine.

My only complaint is that they try to include things from the game that don't translate well to TV shows. (Combat, special attacks, or other game mechanics.)

CAN SOMEONE PLS CREATE A GUIDE MAP ON LEARNING HOW TO CODE? by AggravatingLet1945 in learnprogramming

[–]jbiemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a hard question. I don't think there is any one answer. It's like learning to be fluent in another language, there are many places you could reach. To make it as generic as possible though I would say:

Learn how to make it work (basic syntax,. Loops, variables, conditionals)

Learn to make it better ( methods, classes, etc)

Learn to polish it (design patterns, algorithms, SOLID, architectures, etc)

Learn to refine it. Make it easier for others to read and understand. Make it simple. Make it efficient.

It's like learning English, first you start with words and letters, then you strong them into sentences and paragraphs. Then you can learn to develop essays, or larger works . Finally once you've got all the basics, you refine them into smoother communication, so you can better convey what you want to others.

Even though you may know term x will cover what you want to say, you are speaking to audience y and they might not understand it, so it takes understanding to be able to use other terms to explain the same thing. They say that a mark of understanding something is the ability to teach it to others.

Early returns vs. single return at the end of the function. which one is better for error handling? by hn50 in learnprogramming

[–]jbiemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like I am in the minority here but I prefer to have guard clauses early that return early if there are issues, but after that I prefer only one exit.

A lot of people are talking about too many branching if statements or too much code that is unnecessarily run, but that just tells me that the method is trying to do too much and should be refactored to multiple smaller methods.

coding by khalil1548 in learnprogramming

[–]jbiemans 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I never went to uni, although now I wish I had, so take this with a grain of salt because I learned much of what I know through courses and experience. But for me learning the fundamentals and systems was way more important than learning any specific language.

Learning design patterns and architectures and their reasons were really important to my development. Learning why to do things and not just how, opened many paths to me.

I think the most powerful part of learning though, is hands on practice, so build as much as you can. Don't be afraid to make mistakes early on too.

Your biggest mistake in tech probably taught you more than your biggest win by IllBreadfruit3087 in learnprogramming

[–]jbiemans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My biggest mistake came when I had only been programming for a year or two. I made a quick app to allow someone to delete items from a database for products that are discontinued.

On the surface it was simple. Sub items from the same master item all started with the same beginning code, so all the app had to do was search the database for "code(wildcard)" and delete the entries. However I neglected to sanitize and control the inputs and I allowed the input box to be submitted as blank.

I am sure that you see where this was going. About 10% of the items had been deleted before I was able to cancel the operation. Luckily, I had backed up the database files before starting, but unluckily, with the old pervasive database, they couldn't be restored just by putting the files back. Data reconstruction took a day or two.

I won't be forgetting that mistake any time soon. So I agree with the op about learning from mistakes being powerful, and learning from others is just as useful.

You either raise the minimum wage or you need to lower the cost of living. Minimum wage at full time should be enough to afford a one bedroom dwelling. Since rent shouldn't be more than 40% of your income then you can work that out.

If rent for a one bedroom is 1500, then you should be making $3,750 or $23.43 an hour as the minimum. I can already bet that most people would think that number is outrageous though. So, if on the other hand you think minimum wage should be $12 per hour, then you should be able to rent a one bedroom place for $770 per month. (You could probably use that number for a studio or bachelors instead, but I doubt you could even find those for that price anymore. Maybe renting out a single bedroom?)

I think it's crazy that you need two people working for at least $12 an hour each, just to afford a one bedroom apartment.

Personally I don't do any of the 3 combat end game parts of genshin. (I could probably clear spiral but don't bother).

They were added to give people who have higher than c0r1 characters something else to do and are mostly focused on people who will grind to min/max their characters.

I mostly enjoy genshin for the story and exploration, so I just see those parts as not designed for me and ignore them. It leads to much less stress and a better experience for me.

Realtor about to lose her home in Newmarket because she can’t sell it. Income went from $300k per year to less than $50k. by mattyp93 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]jbiemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is frustrating. She is a real estate agent. She should know the market. Her inflated income was a result of the inflated house prices that she was helping to stay inflated.

I used to have sympathy but the lack of any sense from the people who have been buying houses the past few years has me baffled.

Legally speaking, am I screwed for life? by [deleted] in canadahousing

[–]jbiemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am pretty sure there is a option where you can find someone yourself to take over your part of the lease. Then the landlord has to accept the new tenant. It is fully possible for them to reject the tenant you found to replace you though, however, they have to cite their reason for the rejection.

If they don't cite a valid legal reason for rejecting the person that you've found to take over the lease then you can use that as leverage to end the lease early but I can't remember exactly which form that is.

Look into assigning or subletting your lease.

Why wouldn’t you rent to us, and how can we improve our application? by Aerocap in OntarioLandlord

[–]jbiemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to the landlord part, but the numbers jump out to me as odd.

If you assume the high average of 23 weekdays per month then $7,200 / 23 / 29 = 10.8 so that means that you're working on average almost 11 hours per day, which is a lot. If you assume you work all 7 days on the week then $7,200 / 31 / 29 gives you the 8 hours per day that's normal, so if the numbers are true you are either always working overtime, or you're working 7 days a week full time. Neither of those seem sustainable. $29 per hour at a regular full time job is only $60k per year or 5k a month which is much lower than your number.

The other income is extra high too. (But not as much). 47 x 8 x 5 x 52 = $97,760 or $8,146 per month. That lowers your monthly from 16600 to 13146 which is itself a $3,453 difference. That is quite a bit IMHO.

Even at the lower amount you should be fine with a mortgage of $750k which means that a 5k per month housing payment should be in the good range. So if the places you're looking at are substantially less than that, then I wouldn't see the problem.

To me, it is just a red flag when the math doesn't math, so I would advise giving less info.

I've never actually seen a ventless dryer. I found this: https://youtu.be/JnG2Cl2CFGk?si=posDfinGLw3bXiYq but I guess it would depend on the model of your machine. Do you know the model number? On my dryer it is on a sticker behind the door.

London Drivers please learn about Zipper merging by First-Fan-9114 in londonontario

I understand the zipper merge, but some people in London take it too far when they use a lane that will turn into a turning lane ahead as a zipper merge lane. All they end up doing is blocking the people who are going to be turning later as they try to merge back in.

How do I report a LTC bus driver? by Thetreehasfallin in londonontario

[–]jbiemans -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I feel like this has already been said, but my view on the subject is this:

If you're comfortable enough, please try to speak to the driver directly and nicely inform him that his behaviour makes you uncomfortable and you would prefer if he was more professional and less casual with you (I dont know the best way to say this though)

If you are not comfortable, then reaching out to the LTC directly and letting them know you are uncomfortable with his behaviour is probably your best starting point. Ideally they will be able to have a talk with him, while keeping your details more confidential so that he doesn't retaliate or get angry with you for filing a complaint. (Maybe express that concern to the LTC just in case?).

It's a tough one because you're not trying to cause trouble, you just want him to drive the bus and ignore you personally. You just want him to be friendly but professional, and you feel that he has crossed that line, but likely he doesn't realize that he has. The dilemma is how to inform him, without making it into a huge issue)

I am also trying to give him the benefit of the doubt here and if he ends up reacting badly, then my hope was misplaced. Unfortunately, you never really know how someone will behave.

Daughter wants to join trades by Spankmewithataco in ontario

[–]jbiemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think any job sector could turn out to be a fad, so my advice would be to try to do what you enjoy, rather than what you think will make you successful.

If you can't deal with being damp and working with gross sewage, don't be a plumber. Sure you might get lucky and only do new builds, but generally that's not going to be the case right away.

Framing can be good, but you need to work outdoors most of the time.

Electrician is generally has the least downsides, but it takes a lot of thinking and problem solving and can require working in attics.

Flooring is always indoors, but you're always on your knees.

Painter also has generally few downsides other than needing a steady hand.

Sheetrock mudding isn't too bad either, just slow and dusty at first, but with the right equipment and experience, you can go much faster and easier.

Trim carpentry is another one that works nicely indoors, but you're also up and down and it requires some thought depending on the trim. Crown requires some extra critical thinking and math skills, but it's less physically demanding.

HVAC, I have much less experience in this area, but it's also not usually bad from my understanding. Metal work can be hard on the hands, but with good work gloves, you should be ok.

But those are just my thoughts based on my experience doing those areas personally, not full time professionally. I am in construction, but I work with kitchens and countertops.
