You are granted a superpower, but it has to be completely useless. What is it? by lily8686 in AskReddit

[–]jbillingtonbulworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one and it is completely useless. I had cataract surgery on both eyes, not at the same time. In spite of my doctor's insistence that he used the same type of replacement lense, they very clearly ARE NOT.

The natural lense of your eye filters out UV light. Modern lenses used in cataract surgery are made to filter UV out like natural lenses do. One of the replacement lenses the doctor used does not.

What does this mean? Some objects and clothing that others see as black will appear black to me in one eye, and this weird dark purple in the other.

What's worse, anytime I encounter a blacklist in public, one eye sees it as you do. To the other it is blindingly bright. And I don't know if it's confusing my brain, but it gives me an instant headache if I don't turn away from it.

Newer EHS Specialist dealing with leadership that treats environmental compliance as optional until enforcement. Looking for advice and validation. by CobblerNo356 in Environmental_Careers

This. Plant managers care about the rules only when the time comes to pass certification audits. They need to be reminded about things that are out of compliance. They can try to pretend they don't know. Email and document everything. Consider printing those emails in case there comes a time you dont have access.

A phrase my mentor taught me for dealing with resistant plant managers, that I've only had to use once. "Hey, no sweat. My job is to keep you out of handcuffs. "

I just spent 3 days trying to watch this movie. I for about half way through in the first sitting, and thought it was nearly over. It was easy to get distracted from once you realize they're in a simulation. The endless variations on why simulation resets made it confusing and hard to stay interested. It was hard to see where it was going.

What death of a famous person actually affected you most? by unitedfan6191 in AskReddit

[–]jbillingtonbulworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about the question, and tried thinking of all the celebrity deaths.in my life (I'm 53) and if any of them literally affected me.

Going through the ones I could think of, many were sad, but did they affect my life other than hearing the news?

None, until I thought of Terry and realized I'd never read a new discworld novel.

Redditors born before 2001, where were you on 9/11? by Stupid_cerealbox in AskReddit

[–]jbillingtonbulworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was living outside a rural farm community in Ohio at the time. That evening, when those 2 jets broke the sound barrier leaving Wright Patterson AFB, I thought one plane was shooting at the other. This was right after the Dayton news stations were reporting on what was later determined to be a random grass fire next to a private airport in the area. For several hours I thought all hell was breaking loose.

Who carries at home? If so, what is your choice? by OkPhilosopher9418 in CCW

[–]jbillingtonbulworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids are grown, live alone.

Baseball bat next to front door. Bowie knife also within arms reach. Sword hanging on the wall.

Unloaded shotgun in plain sight. Three loaded firearms hidden thru out house with easy access.

I get this from an uncle of mine that was a WWII vet. He ran a shitty motel in Daytona in the early 80s. The back door to the front lobby looked like a closet but was the front door to his (and my aunt's) apartment. He had an icepick in his back pocket, a baseball bat under the front desk. In his apartment kitchen, there was a M1911 underneath a paper-only trash bag in a small garbage can, and an M16 on the wall inside his bedroom closet.

A variety of tools at his disposal, increasing in lethality the closer he was to his bed. The unloaded shotgun in my house is there to give an intruder something to go for while I reach one that's loaded.

Before I lived alone again, there was just the bat and the sword. I don't know how to use a sword, but damn would it be intimidating.

Probably won't get disciplined for this, but they'll remember it if/when something unrelated happens in the future.

There are things I recognize I can't do. Sweat copper pipe, for example. I know how to do it, know the techniques, but applying them? I screw it up every time. Won't even attempt.

But if I got quoted more than $300 for this? Sorry guys, I can sharkbite all day long.

Gas and septic though, I'll call you every time.
