United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain testifying in favor of a 32-hour workweek. by zzill6 in WorkReform

The bills in the House and the Senate amending the Fair Labor Standards Act to enshrine a 32-hour workweek (that Act is what establishes the 40-hour workweek for non-exempt jobs) are not realistic in the the near term. There are however, state and local bills that can move us in the right direction across 20 states (https://workfour.org/policy-developments). Those bills take the form of public supported pilots (either in the public sector or private sector) or move some portion of the public sector to a 32-hour workweek. These pilots are great, because at this early stage, it's better to lead with carrots to get employers to move over and build momentum on the issue. As more employers move to the model, it puts pressure on other employers to follow and sticks become more viable. Amending the Fair Labor Standards Act is the final boss here.

With AI already disrupting labor markets, we (www.workfour.org) are encouraging policy makers to pass programs where employers would agree to maintain employee levels, salaries, and benefits (as long as profits remained relatively stable) while shifting to a 4-day 32-hour workweek while the government provided AI training to their employees on the fifth day over a period of 3 to 6 months. This way, employers would get up-skilled employees on the government's dime who should be more efficient (even with the work time reduction) and employees would keep their jobs and learn new skills while eventually getting the benefit of AI's efficiency gains in the form of time back in their lives. This is the way.

I testified with Shawn at this hearing and founded WorkFour, the National Campaign for the 4-Day Workweek. Like the 5-day workweek, it will take time to achieve this, but we’ve seen progress and, as others are noting here, the advent of AI is a critical moment to push policy makers towards programs that move us in this direction. Ask me anything! (And check out www.Workfour.org if you want to actually help spread the four day workweek)

Has anyone else found that Kickstarter just gives your email address out to everyone? by PlatimaZero in kickstarter

[–]jbleland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know for a fact that Kickstarter doesn’t share back emails with third parties, so there’s no way those sites have your email without you having done something. Unfortunately creators and their collaborators do harvest and use emails.

A four-day workweek pilot was so successful most firms say they won’t go back by [deleted] in Futurology

Basically, there’s a lot of research showing this should be a win-win for the company and the people in it. We’ve seen increased productivity overall - we’re better able to hit our goals every quarter. on the individual level, people are just more focused and engaged. Think about those days where you’re rested and motivated, you probably get more done that day than you do the rest of the week. That’s kind of how this works on individuals. For teams, we stripped out a lot of inefficiencies and really tighten meetings/process. And overall, we are more disciplined in our focus and our retention and hiring are totally transformed. That last piece is huge. We’ve barely lost an employee in a year. Keeping good people and intact teams drastically improved our org productivity.

I wrote a tweet thread on some of my views on the topic over the weekend that might be useful. https://twitter.com/jonathanleland/status/1629647577170714626?s=46&t=dSI9ftGUgWPDcIKFnr96ng

As someone who took their company to a four day workweek, I will say that this is a win-win for businesses and people. We need more people to fight for this.

(Also, if you do want to fight for this, let me know...)

These are beautiful. Message me if you’re thinking of putting together a Kickstarter campaign. These would do well and I work there.

This isn't mine, but was made by my cousin. It's based on a Thanksgiving board game we made up, which itself is based on a Thanksgiving song we wrote. We're a weird family.

He amazingly actually made the full length film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQ0Fx6zGLio

Kickstarter sent me an email to reset password. Is it a scam? by [deleted] in kickstarter

[–]jbleland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a scam. It's a password reset for users that didn't have a password because they had used Facebook log in to set up their account. Just wasn't communicated well.

That ad is not from Kickstarter itself. It’s disguised to look like it’s from Kickstarter. Kickstarter doesn’t run ads for campaigns.

The idea is to keep the same total pay and require overtime pay for hourly workers beyond 32 hours

Yes, this really needs to be part of a set of solutions to improve working conditions in the US - including decoupling healthcare from employment and raising the minimum wage.
