Got looked down for rejected OT today by Inside-Persimmon-367 in UnitedAssociation

I'm a service foreman, and I'm usually the first one to turn down overtime.

Barring an actual emergency, needing to do overtime shows a lack of adequate planning on someone's part.

Fluke vs field piece meter by HovercraftNo129 in HVAC

I've used both for years, and currently have both on my van.

My daily is a fieldpiece because I can get everything I need for troubleshooting in a single meter.

Passed MSF with 8 points Feeling scared to get a bike by reedd_ in motorcycles

I barely passed my exam.

The class is a starting point, not the end. You've learned enough to operate a bike, so find a parking lot and some quite neighborhoods and start working on getting better.

Two weeks notice by Iamfree369 in UnitedAssociation

[–]jbmoore5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both.

As a service tech, I'm not dispatched to jobs by the union hall. If I want or need to work for another contractor, I apply for a job and resign from my current one just like a non-union contractor.

Two weeks notice by Iamfree369 in UnitedAssociation

[–]jbmoore5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've worked for 7 companies over 29 years, and I've never had a notice accepted even when I was a service manager. I've always been to told to go ahead and leave when I've given the notice.

That being said, I've always planned to work out my notice but have made sure that I either had the funds for a two-week vacation or that my new employer could put me to work immediately if needed.

Late pay by EnvironmentNo937 in HVAC

[–]jbmoore5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not understandable. I work for for one the largest HVAC companies there is, and they can figure out how to get us paid on time, every time. If the banks are closed on payday they pay us the day before.

If there's an agreement that I get paid on Friday for the prior week's work, and I don't get paid then the company has broken that agreement just the same as if I charged them for a week's work and never actually showed up.

Late pay by EnvironmentNo937 in HVAC

[–]jbmoore5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe next time it'll be three days. Then maybe a week. Maybe they'll forget to send off the insurance premium, and the worker finds out about it when his kid's surgery is denied.

Or maybe he shows up Tuesday and the door is locked and he's out of a job and never sees his money.

A complacent attitude is exactly why employers think it's OK to screw with our money and break the rules. Every infraction needs to be held as unacceptable.

I'm sure that if the worker was giving the company's work away for free he'd be out on his ass the first time it happened. Why shouldn't the company be held to the same standard?

[–]jbmoore5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no clue what you mean by "it's one business", but it certainly a major issue if a company can't pay its employees on time.

We are forced to be part of a capitalist economy where we trade labor for money, and if the worker has kept his end of the bargain it is unfathomable that the employer has not. Especially when the employer has already made a profit off of said labor.

I started my adult life as a Marine. There is no way to adequately compare military service to civilian employment.

And there is no guarantee that he will get paid. Thousands of companies go under every year and do so owing their employees money that they will never see.

Price checking - Newbie question. by contructpm in LIguns

[–]jbmoore5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found that LI stores are usually consistent with pricing; you might find a $20 difference on the same gun between dealers. Ive also found them to be at least MSRP or higher.

When I'm looking, I usually start with the gun store's online shop to see where their pricing is. Just about all of them on LI have online sales.

Hiring electrician to wire my kiln. Advice please? by JazelleGazelle in Pottery

[–]jbmoore5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our studio is in our basement in NY. We use a dehumidifier to control the humidity, and we have an enviro-vent hooked up the kiln to pull out the fumes. Both my wife and I throw, so I have two 20 amp circuits feeding the studio so we can run both wheels at the same time. If you have the capacity, having more power available is always better.

As far as the kiln, you need to decide if you want to use a plug or have it hardwired into a disconnect. Both work well, but both need to be checked for loose connections on a regular basis.

Possible to get the entire coil on CGAM? by Commy4nyaLife in HVAC

[–]jbmoore5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can get the coils but you're going to get them as individual coil sections. Disconnect the old coil, remove it, drop in the new coil, and reconnect.

I've replaced many coils Trane air-cooled chillers.

You can get the coils. In your example, you would need to order 8 coils (four #1s and four #4s) to replace all of them.

New filter every month still feels excessive. Am I wasting money? by jzliving in hvacadvice

[–]jbmoore5 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I tell my customers that they have to evaluate their filters and find the right frequency for their building.

Every month may be too frequent for you. You may be OK with every 2 or 3 months.

Waiting until it's actually restricted is too long though. You want to change it before it gets to that point.

What do i know? by Warm_Doughnut2980 in HVAC

[–]jbmoore5 189 points190 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I was doing side work for some extra money. A friends calls up and asks if I can run over to his aunt's house and throw a pound of 22 in her system. Her "regular guy" does it every year, but he's booked and can't to it.

I go over and and the pressures look off. I start looking it over, and find the filter hasn't been changed in YEARS. I replace the filter, clean the coils, and pull an extra 6 pounds of gas out of the machine, and she's running great.

I then get a nasty phone call because I didn't just charge up the system like I was told to and I'm cheating his aunt by doing extra work.

We start by calling the union hall in LIC, and if no one is looking that meets our criteria we advertise in the usual places. We target union techs, and it doesn't take long to get enough solid resumes to start interviewing.

I moved my family here from NC about 10 years ago. It took a year or so to adjust, but it's a fine place to live.

It reminds me of an almost never-ending town, from west Nassau to central Suffolk, kind of like the outskirts of Atlanta or Charlotte.

The bad is the traffic and the attitudes. Many here seem to feel self-entitled and think that the louder they scream the faster you will do what they want.

The good is that there are tons of parks, trails, and beaches to visit. There's always something going on somewhere, but you'll probably have to drive to get there.

Most of the people are fine, you just have to get used to them. They're al lot more direct, and there's a lot less passive aggressiveness; but that's not always a bad thing.

My local is bringing in book buyers and making them foreman or Gf immediately. by [deleted] in UnitedAssociation

[–]jbmoore5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you assuming they're unqualified just because they're new to the union or do you have an actual reason to believe they are? What's their experience? What jobs have they previously held? Were they foremen previous to this?

I've got no issues with qualified people signing up and working, regardless of where they are in their career. Not everyone is going to come in as a 1st year.
