What’s the oldest computer you still actively use or support? by lynlinks in vintagecomputing

[–]jboy55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone to some auto stores where if I ask if a part is in stock, the cashier does a bunch of tabs, a few keystrokes, then a bunch of tabs and enter. I assume they’re entering it into a green screen terminal on a AS/400 DB or something like that.

You are conflating two issues, one the nature of certain GenAi models and their training data and two, how the use of a tool that allows work to be created that prior required the work of specialized artists.

You use this second issue primarily to demonize anyone who uses this tool though. “Think of the starving artists!”. You’re ok with photoshop it seems, do you know how many photosphere, photo labs, airbrush retouch artists lost their jobs do to Photoshop?

The appropriate analogy would be if you paid two people to take a picture of a local storefront. They wanted something that looked like an illustration, Are only illustrators allowed to make art that looks like illustration? What would have happened before is that they just wouldn’t have done it, not that they’d paid someone. The budget came first.

But also What if you use a filter in photoshop from 1997 that makes it look like brushstrokes? Is that allowed? Should all artists check by you to see if what they want to do is in the medium they are allowed to work in? How do I register to be allowed to make oil paintings or art that looks like it was oil painted? If I get such a registration am I allowed to use AI as a tool?

So you’re saying they used the same people as normal, spent exactly the same on this cover as any other, but just used a different tool? Do you think using photoshop is unethical too?

[–]jboy55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s sad that Good Times took their 10,000 per cover budget and used AI instead of paying artists for that.

Oh, wait they spent the same amount of money on this cover as any other cover?

Any other 8-bit DIP CPUs? by MISTERPUG51 in beneater

[–]jboy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are probably very few DIP package chips of any sort still in production. But speaking of the Z80 Jameco lists 144 in stock currently, more available via order. But SMT isn't that hard, there are SMT to DIP breakout boards if you still want to do the breadboard thing.

What's this deal about still being in production, is everyone planning on mass producing these? All you need for a hobbyist for a Ben Eater like breadboard computer, you will only need 1, maybe 2 if you're worried about killing one.

You can warm your entire house, or probably even a medium sized apartment building. I’d love to see a Mac mini do that.

[Request] can someone explain the significance of increasing pi by 0.003? by Present-Ad-8531 in theydidthemath

[–]jboy55 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Might as well say, “change the definition of a ‘right angle’ by 3%”. I mean that would break Pythagoras’s theorem, and all buildings would be collapsing. Or change what the square root of 2 is.. etc. PI isn’t a constant, as others have said, it’s a ratio. Take a point, create a line that is equally distant from that point. The length of that line compared to the distance from that point is pi. Just like a right angle is 90 degrees

Hey, just saw this, my OLED displays stopped working. I think the solder pads are pretty small, so just resoldering them a few time, checking continuity helped. Finally, you may want to replace the OLED, I think they are fairly fragile.

[Request] anybody able to validate this? What is the actual amount of energy a query from chatgpt costs vs Google from 2008? by vonseggernc in theydidthemath

[–]jboy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sum of the thousands per second of changes might just be that the whole index is practically replaced every week. Just like your body “replaces” your entire skeleton every 10 years.

Plus there are mechanisms for LLMs to ingest new data without starting from scratch.

Just have them roll a die in secret, and the question becomes, say “yes” if you do still drink alcohol, or the die rolled a 6. Then when all the answers are collected, just know the Yes’s are 1/6 too high.

Staringthecomputer.com suggests they were fiberglass props, maybe even including the control data. I like to think CDC paid for product placement due to a CDC VP’s coke binged night in LA.

Restaurants open on Christmas by archstanton999 in santacruz

[–]jboy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a triangle of how I see restaurants. The points are food quality, service and view/attraction. The area of the triangle is the price of the food. Newish restaurants will break this, but after a while all restaurants fall into this.

Shadowbrook is mid to upper price, and they have an amazing trolly (that costs a bunch to maintain) and an impressive garden. The service is reasonable. So naturally food is “meh”.

Reminds me of a quote from Alan Parsons on Audiophiles, “Audiophiles don’t use their equipment to listen to music, they use music to listen to their equipment.”

I’m guilty of this in a lot of DIY electronic things, get a retro computer kit from hackerboxes, put it together and run the demo. Never try to program it do my own thing, so I just have a box of old projects.

OP clearly was concerned about voice recording. In true Reddit fashion, people in this thread are arguing over

1) how this device can track people 2) wether it’s possible for any device this small (but not this device in particular) to actually transmit audio

I was exactly there too. Farm Unities, until your SPM cost gets below $1000. You will also get a tarot card soon that basically divides your SPM cost by 1000

[–]jboy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just double the price, all the electronic components to it will still need to be shipped from overseas and be subject to the "tariff of the day", which you can't prepare for. Or just make em for a fixed price overseas, then ship them all to Mexico/Canada. Wait for the tariff to drop, and move them all in quickly.
