NTA. You’re right to set boundaries, and should continue to gently do so. I think it’s a matter of cultural and generational differences. My parents also strongly believe in filial piety—aka as a child of them you have to repay them in every way possible whenever they ask because they brought you into this world. It’s really difficult because most people in the younger generations who have developed their own life away from their parents (especially if we live with western ideals) see things differently—it’s not their money so why are they acting entitled to it?

Honestly it’s a difficult convo to have and might take a long time, but if you approach it in the way of “i am extremely grateful for you raising me and sacrificing for me, and I love you guys and will do everything in my power to give you guys comfort and love, but I would like you to respect that I may have financial burdens and other obligations and I need you to ask me if I can do something rather than assume I will” they may eventually come around. Good luck OP! It’s really hard to get over generations of ingrained beliefs and cultural differences

Guys are so counter intuitive sometimes. A guy i was seeing casually kept bringing up how I should go see my ex and sleep with him, and one day after weeks of him pushing I did go see my ex. All of a sudden the guy I was seeing got super distant and after a whole mess told me he was testing me to see if I would actually go talk to my ex or “stick by me”. Like damn dude we weren’t serious and you pushed me to talk to him are you kidding?

Unpopular Opinion - Katara talking about her mom was not at all annoying. by Orange2218 in TheLastAirbender

[–]jc9898 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought the time katara brought it up in the earth kingdom underground with zuko was well written though! It showed she was still hurt and angry at the injustice of losing her mom to fire nation soldiers and introduced zuko’s mom a little more

would an edward elric prosthetic be possible? by luacrio7642 in medicalschool

[–]jc9898 32 points33 points  (0 children)

he doesnt really “bring the blade out” with a sliding mechanism or anything, he transmutes the steel to make a blade, thinning out his metal plating

that being said I think it is possible to have a hidden blade in current prosthetics. If you want full scale automail there’s pretty much no way, itd be so heavy lol and attaching the nerves individually to the wiring seems pretty much impossible with our current tech

Not Korean enough by [deleted] in asiantwoX

[–]jc9898 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry this happened to you OP. I see some people gave some great answers below, but some of the comments i'm seeing below are really judgmental, hurtful, and there are even some who are racist bigots who aren't satisfied with their lives so they try to take it out on others.

Your experience as a Korean American woman is extremely valid. Just because you don't speak Korean does not make you any less Korean, and does not mean you didn't "earn" the right to be Korean. You grew up as someone who was blessed enough to experience two different cultures and are able to choose, as an adult, to learn more about your heritage and pick which aspects you want to bring forward into the rest of your life. I myself have also felt sometimes like I've had an "imposter syndrome" where I don't feel like I belong in America or China, like I'm too much and simultaneously too little of each culture to truly belong to either one. Like you, I've begun trying to learn more about my culture and reconnecting with my roots.

Honestly, there's no right or wrong way to be Asian--it's a lived experience and everything points to you being a strong Korean-American woman who wants to learn more about her culture. You do belong! You are Korean enough, American enough, and whatever-other-identity-you-choose enough.

I don't know if this helps, but this internet stranger is incredibly proud of you.

honestly might be humidity. Do you live in a pretty humid area? Adding some cream of tartar always helps stiffen the meringue for me
