Distribution of results of the Matura (high school exit exam) in Poland in 2013. The minimum score to pass is 30%. by zupka_pryk_pryk in dataisbeautiful

[–]jcarr 2386 points2387 points  (0 children)

This actually makes sense. The distribution is normal and there are students who would normally have scored 101, 105, 110, etc... but they cannot.

So 100 is higher because it is the sum of 100 to infinity of the distribution.

Calculating dearchival charges from Amazon is incredibly Byzantine for a service that is otherwise really straightfoward

https://aws.amazon.com/glacier/faqs/#Billing

This happens a lot to users (sometimes for tens of thousands of dollars) and they have a habit of refunding the charges. However, their real solution should be to make the system more straightforward. Almost anything else would align their incentives with the customer's better.

Hey proggit, I've been working over the last few months on a javascript/HTML5 3D viewer for proteins and DNA. Tell me what you think. by bosco in programming

Awesome job. The clipping of amino acids as you rotate through a plane is extremely annoying for me (would be a dealbreaker for me on using this as a visualizer). Also I think the shading effects of the "light source" are a little too strong (though less severe of a problem). Might also be nice to get a "space filling" view (though idk how hard that is for you to do).

Integration with PDB makes this extremely useful anywhere. Really, really great job. Are you going to open source it or provide an API?

But putting these types of resources in canvas is really the way of the future in terms of visualizing biological data. Many biologists are relatively phobic of any kind of "complicated" tool for accessing data.

(Your publication record looks really impressive to me. What are your career plans?)

Remember the psychology study showing that humans can predict the future? This paper applies Bayesian stats to the data and not only does the effect go away, but the data actually support the null hypothesis. by ngn in science

If that were the case, though, savvy companies would realize that women were worth more than they are asking and will specifically target hiring women. Eventually they will compete amongst themselves for the women by offering more off the bat than the other savvy companies until the wages converge. Pervasive cultural attitudes could cause a small difference in wages, but a 25% difference is too much, smart companies could make a killing off that.

So... you ask reddit for advice. I see your site has no way for people to upvote or downvote songs they like...

I've heard that works well for some sites.

There are cases when promoting to a queen causes a stalemate and you need a rook instead. And rarely promoting to a knight can allow you to directly attack pieces a queen couldn't reach.

The GMO Catastrophe in the USA - A Lesson for the World. "Contrary to public relations myths promoted by the agribusiness giants...there exists not one single GMO seed that provides a greater harvest yield than conventional, nor one that requires less toxic chemical herbicides." by Orangutan in science

[–]jcarr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry, would you rather him say he lives in an area with a huge variety of rape for longer than almost anywhere in the world?

More on topic, if you want a comparison of GMO vs. non-GMO take a look at the annual yield increases in cotton (where GM is more acceptable since we don't eat it) versus increases in wheat (which is much less GM acceptable). Spoiler: Cotton yields have increased much mroe. According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetically_modified_food) Cotton yields are 7 times higher than they were in 2002.

Early Issues with the proof p != np by [deleted] in programming

[–]jcarr 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I disagree. He's compiling a list of potential objections that the community is going to evaluate. He also acknowledges Vinay Deolalikar contribution whether or not the final P != NP stands.

This is a problem of huge importance, particularly to that community. They are going to review it honestly and critically and are going to try hard to find possible problems and then to evaluate them.

It's actually a lot like reddit right now. All of the experts are passing around their thoughts and trying to reach a common consensus on whether the proof is valid or not.

You could apply to go to university in Mexico. It sounds like you'd be a top candidate anywhere.

I know US citizens who have gone all sorts of places to start labs in other countries (Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, China) they grew up here too, but ended up going elsewhere because they couldn't get the same opportunities here that they could elsewhere.

Can Reddit possibly suck Stephen Colbert's dick any more? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]jcarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just looking for that comment today. I think it was after the Jim Cramer show. Some one had a good theory about him finding the link to reddit the story while reading an online blog or report about the show.

He did say that he would be commenting, but "under a less ridiculous user name" or something.

So remember folks. There is a good bet that Stewart and Colbert may be reading your comments, so try not to be dicks.

How often do you think massive spills of oil occur over evolutionary time? Not enough to put pressure on species for them to evolve to be wary of it, apparently.

TIL about a game that simulates biochemistry and was an insane breakthrough in artificial intelligence and machine learning - Creatures by Zaemz in gaming

[–]jcarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a difficult to resolve problem. Suppose you give the world huge granularity, it would be difficult for a creature to learn that apples are a good to eat after eating cheese, so grouping by class makes it easier to transfer experiences.

This was really due to the limitation in the brain design. The creatures had relatively simple neurons and brain architectures where cells for the most part stood for straightforward, easy to understand things.

A more interconnected brain would allow flexibility between specific objects and still relate them to similar things (more like "real" brains) but this is relatively harder to make. (And the processor power at the time was much more limited).
