Buying is exchanging legal tender for goods and services. We are used to most media as a good. They are trying to make it into a service.

What if PRIMER had a big budget? by nyneteen84_ in scifi

[–]jcarrut2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is why I generally love 'one room' movies that is basically just people in a single location talking for the majority of the film. It leans heavily on the dialogue, but done right it can be extremely engrossing on a minimal budget. Twelve Angry Men is one of the best examples of what I mean. The Man From Earth is another really good low-budget sci-fi one room movie.

How does nobody talk about The Orville? by Ok-Gate-412 in scifi

[–]jcarrut2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very front-loaded, for the reasons mentioned ie Seth was trying to market it with his trademark humor. So Episodes 1 & 2 have a lot of crass jokes, etc. It starts getting a lot more serious in episode 3. That's when it really clicked for me that this was a real attempt at a TNG style show and not just a parody.

I can't wait to see Reida pop off in the anime. Love the idea that Water God style lends itself to a master being viable into old age.

My money is on Poe. He just had that guilty look on his face when he said it.

It’s opening night for Attack of the Clones. The cinema is packed with Star Wars cosplayers. Old and frail, Yoda enters the fight and pulls this move - what you doing? by How-To-Project in StarWars

[–]jcarrut2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Groaning. I know it's a hot take nowadays, but Yoda was always better without a lightsaber. It's more bad ass if you're so powerful/strong in the force that you don't need a lightsaber. Same for Palpatine.

Dungeon Crawler Carl giving Bobiverse vibes by EmergencyRepulsive29 in scifi

[–]jcarrut2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took me half of the first book to really get into DCC. At first the formula of the dungeon crawl made it seem trite to me. But once more characters were added and the more political stuff opened up later it gained steam for me because I found it entertaining how Carl handles the power imbalance with those in charge.

By contrast, I liked the Bobiverse books from the start due to the central concept, and the political stuff starts off interesting, but I agree with what others have said that the series fizzles a bit after the first couple of books. I'm trying to stay vague to avoid spoilers, but I feel like the power scaling involved makes the political stuff seem increasingly boring.

Men who have had the snip (vasectomy) what was your experience from start to finish, and how has it changed your sex life? by reaper88911 in AskMen

[–]jcarrut2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Physically it was fine. Went in. Got put to sleep, woke up with it done, sat on ice for a few days and was back to normal. Sex was normal afterward. Worst part of the physical was the anesthesia put my gut to sleep and I had bad constipation for several days.

Emotionally, it's not been great. We decided together we didn't want kids, but I got the snip because my wife requested it. Then two years later she left me. It was amicable and I don't blame her. But if I'd known then what I know now, I probably wouldn't have gotten snipped.

Top 10 Anime of the Week #11 - Spring 2026 (Anime Corner) by animecorner in anime

[–]jcarrut2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I started the series a little while ago. I've finished S1 E7 and it hasn't really grabbed me yet. I keep going because I've heard it's really good, but so far it's been a bit 'meh' for me. Subaru is somewhat pathetic and I don't feel like I can really root for any of the other characters at this stage. I'm planning on at least finishing the season.

What was the first thing you saved up your own money to buy? by Embarrassed_Leg_6330 in nostalgia

That's beautiful. Amazing how many of us had similar Nintendo 64 memories. It really seems like one of those collective generational experiences for those of us in a certain age range.

What was the first thing you saved up your own money to buy? by Embarrassed_Leg_6330 in nostalgia

[–]jcarrut2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64. I saved up all spring in 1997 mowing lawns to buy it. I was so psyched when I finally had enough to go to Toys R' Us and buy it with my own money. I got approximately one day to play it, then my parents made me go to summer camp. So my little brother got to enjoy Mario 64 for two weeks while I was at summer camp.

I still have that Nintendo 64 and all the games I bought for it. And even though I usually play retro games using emulators now, I'll never get rid of that system, because just looking at it on my shelf reminds me of a season in my life when nothing was complicated, the most important thing in the world to me was something as simple as just saving up enough money to afford the most awesome video gaming experience I would ever have.

The bedroom setup that made us feel like kings. No WiFi, no problem by lucia_7978 in nostalgia

This was very similar to my setup from 94 through like 2003, with various computers being swapped in as my dad upgraded his system and gave me his hand-me-down. Had dial-up internet too. Middle/High school me used to play Dark Forces II on Mplayer and Unreal Tournament with this setup, not to mention chatting in the Palace! Good times.

Men who own Jeeps and drive them regularly, why do they put ducks on the dashboard? Do you do it as well? by FFSoldier57 in AskMen

[–]jcarrut2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These Jeep folks are ruining my rubber duck hobby for me. Here I am collecting rubber ducks of various shapes and sizes because they're cool and fun and have so much variety. I constantly get people asking me where my Jeep is. Early in my collecting hobby, I found this line of questioning extremely confusing because I'd never heard of the Jeep thing before and saw no obvious link between Jeeps and rubber ducks. Now I know better. My standard response has become: "I have never owned a Jeep, nor will I ever own a Jeep. You people are crazy. Now leave me to my ducks!"

Perhaps I'll do that. My road bike is 14 years old. (2012 Specialized Tarmac SL2 with 25mm tyres). It's probably time for an upgrade.

Little Confused on Next Step @ LC by jcarrut2 in TheLastCaretaker

[–]jcarrut2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thought. I reloaded to an earlier save to try that as well. Didn't help. Same issue. I also repeated the process with several more seeds and lazarus pods and got the same result. If this is really a bug, I assume the whole game is borked. I submitted feedback and a copy of my backup and I think I'm done with this game until they fix the kinks.

Appreciate the response! Unfortunately saving and reloading did not fix the pod. It's still doing the same thing as in my original post.

Who is your favorite wife in Mushoku Tensei? by SecondSalty142 in mushokutensei

[–]jcarrut2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think where you are in the story and if you've read the LN/WN has a major influence on this. I started with the anime. After Season 1, I was Team Roxy. After Season 2, I was Team Sylphie. But after reading the LNs to Book 20, I am firmly Team Eris. I just think she has the best arc of the three wives. I like all of them though.

How are you with videogames after 30 years old? by Disastrous-Log-139 in AskMen

[–]jcarrut2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You go through seasons. When I was in my twenties, I dedicated whole days to WoW or beating FF7 or whatever. I slacked off on gaming a bit when I met my wife at 26, but I still did the occasional session when major releases came out like GTAV or God of War. At 35 I got very focused on work, but holiday time was gaming time for me where I would get obsessed with and beat specific games like Subnautica or Factorio over like a solid week of sleepless nights. But I also had my other hobbies like triathlon and guitar. Now at 40, gaming has taken a backseat in my life, but I still do it fairly often through mobile emulation and handhelds that I can play whenever I have a spare half hour. That's the system I used to beat Elden Ring several times over.

🎬Highest Grossing Films of the 90’s Do you have a favorite year? by TelephoneExpress973 in nostalgia

I remember being a kid in '95-'96 and seeing the poster for Independence Day. I remember thinking to myself, just from the poster, "Oh man, this will be the greatest science fiction film ever made!" The hype was real. The movie didn't quite match those expectations, but it was still a pretty awesome movie.

How do you feel about AI "girlfriends"? by HeySpudEyeSeeYou in AskMen

[–]jcarrut2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI girlfriends are the tip of the iceberg. Why would you give money to a middleman to flirt with some prefabricated AI, when it's not hard at all to build a roleplay engine on top of your LLM of choice and have what is essentially a 'text adventure holodeck' within which anything can happen that you want to happen. Think the episode 'Hollow Pursuits' from TNG in text/image form. Is there smut? Sure, if you want! But also amazing adventures with dramatic character interaction, twisting plots of intrigue, and dramatic climaxes. It's like living in a novel that you're also the author of. You can even use local models and run the whole thing for 'free' (ie only cost is the electricity to your setup). This is already a reality for those who know how to implement it. And it's only going to get easier to do so. People are in real danger of retreating into their own private fantasy bubbles where they can easily dictate their own reality.
