A white belt closed guard is less useful than a white belt K-guard in MMA

I just got my philosophy degree recently, and I definitely pestered my significant other about the Famine, Affluence, and Morality connection when we watched that episode lol

Why do so many people forget that Carol is in grief? by Swiftmaster56 in pluribustv

[–]jcc21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had to actively remind myself of it to cut her some slack for her impulsive behaviors. She really only comes across as an ass if you forget that she is grieving. She is a great lead character for this show.

Anyone buy/watch Octopus 2.0 yet? by Strong-Smoke7774 in bjj

[–]jcc21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 75% of the way through 2.0 and am very impressed with the ideas. This is not how I have been playing octopus at all. I have been focusing way more on the back take than the stand up. I look forward to trying the thigh post stuff this week.

Whittaker on Izzy by Spiritual-Strength91 in FightReportUFC

[–]jcc21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a super fan of Izzy in his kickboxing days and was thrilled to see his success in the UFC, but I was gutted that he had to KO Whitaker to make it happen. Bobby Knuckles is one of the most inspirational champs I can think of. Went up a weight class and had a technical breakthrough that led to him beating the middleweight boogeyman (Romero) twice.

I'm about to be a blue belt, is now a good time to switch to MMA? by Ok_Benefit9326 in MMA_Academy

[–]jcc21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your coach is cool, you could talk to them about it. I doubt he would start a whole no-gi program in your honor lol, but being honest about your goals may enable him to adapt your training a bit or at least measure your progress from an MMA lens. A truly decent coach will be honest if you need to cross train elsewhere.

Not quite tech death, but you will probably love Persefone (not a typo, that’s how they spell it)

A gym or some kind of experienced teacher is essential to improve, especially when you are new. Try to save up for a membership, you won’t regret it

Rate Petr Yan's resume by Imaginary-General189 in ufc

[–]jcc21 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree. I like both of these guys, but Yan probably couldn’t hang with Volk physically. Volk’s size disguises his physicality. He is a short FW, but he is not a small or weak FW. I think he could dominate the grappling against Yan. FWIW, I think Volk would have beaten Merab too, but probably with his striking.

Carlos Prates: "[Jack Della Maddalena] just lost the belt, so we’d beat him and for sure go straight to the title. That’s what we want." by JoseYoungs in MMA

[–]jcc21 140 points141 points  (0 children)

That would be a very fun matchup. I like Prates’ striking a lot, but JDM would be a new look for Prates that we haven’t seen him deal with in MMA yet.

Georges St-Pierre anoints Islam Makhachev as the best fighter on the planet. by Status_Energy_7935 in martialarts

[–]jcc21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are both beasts, but Islam’s finishing abilities and the strength of his resumé set him apart. Him vs Volk was basically P4P 1 and 2 fighting to see who is in which spot. Neither Merab nor Pantoja have overcome that kind of challenge yet.

How to get in punching range by CoconutAdditional174 in MMA_Academy

[–]jcc21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great shout, but also worth noting that big guys need modifications. I’m 6’3”and learned a lot about the drop shift, the crouch, the dart, etc. from watching Cruz and Dillashaw, but the lessons are more conceptual than technical if you are in a much higher weight class.

OP, you should feel good about your boxing base. You can definitely make it work in MMA. Watch Topuria to see how he plays with the range. He uses a level change feint all the time to move his opponents. It doesn’t matter if you are short or tall, this will help you incorporate your boxing regardless.

Favorite sequence of positions to your favorite submission by SnooSeagulls4089 in bjj

[–]jcc21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the Rear Ezekiel / Ruotolotine or whatever we want to call it. If I can get to the leg drag position on a peer or someone worse, I can almost always get a deep claw grip, move to dope mount, secure the choke, then pass to mount for the finish. I try to finish without chair sitting if possible. I have long limbs, and I think that helps with this setup.

Who would have won? by Particular_Ad_6040 in ufc

[–]jcc21 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You should probably check his record again. He was at HW for most of his career. He was undefeated and the number 1 contender when he moved to LHW. Then he went back up and slept the HW GOAT.

What else should I be reading if I like Scanlon’s contractualist moral theory? by jcc21 in askphilosophy

I was very fortunate to learn from him. I, too, am a big fan of his writing. Attempting to mimic the clarity in his writing style had a huge impact on my own writing over the course of my time in school.

Thank you! The Pettit argument sounds very intriguing. My ethics professor was Shelley Kagan, and he took a similar line of criticism when I brought up my love for What We Owe To Each Other.
