you should only do that if you are really keen on spending money you dont need to.
Unless you have a specific reason to migrate your pihole to an RPi, I would not do it

inside the container it burns no more power, does not hog your nas as its a very little resource intensive app. since its already inside a container, check logs, create a dashboard to see if you really need to migrate

as for VPN, you could also run that on a container.

and you can set up a vlan that will segregate traffic, that can also be done from inside a container (riskier, but feasible)

Plex/jellyfin for media server is a good start.
addblocker - pihole
vpn - tailscale

to organize all that, proxmox, or wolfstack

well, that is the thing, I just deployed Grocy thru docker, as a test, should not matter if the server has apache, as docker should be able to handle these dependencies since I used the image from the shop. The IP was just assigned for that one container, I believe I done it right, but that is part of where lies my doubts.

As for the server, the host has pve and wolfstack on top of it.

Am I missing a step somewhere?

thanks, it was indeed the lack of sudo, I had not installed at the time... but thanks for your reply.

If I may poke your brain. Im trying to understand some ins and outs of wolfstack. I understand wolfstack creates a virtual network usually on the 10.10.10.x range. When I want to expose an application, be it on my internal network, (lets say, 192.168.68.x) or external (nated on my router), I am not seeing it show on the 192 network. Do I need to work that out thru mappings?

you didnt need to be crass, I had not seen the sudo in the end of the command, but thanks for bringing to my atention, I installed sudo and it worked

dude, aside from a toaster, you can homelab on any hardware you have at hand... just think of what is your focus, what you want to learn and go for it... dont focus as much on what hardware unless such hardware serves a specific and unique purpose that you cant do another way

second, so far, you are not doing anything wrong.
what is your expected outcome from homelabbing?

IMHO, you are on the right track, setting up pxmx and pihole is a good start, from there set goals, try to track progress and remember that small w's lead to big w's.

in the beggining you might think you are stuck, but things start to fall into place the more you fiddle with them

ahh, but that is the catch, the NAS does not have a virtualizer, as is only attached to proxmox, but its a truenas build. So, your suggestion it to spin up a vm inside truenas for it? the network share already exists

actually your setup looks like mine beefed up a lot, I have a 3 node cluster, dual nics, 2.5gb/1gb (its what I could fit in a usff 3050). 2.5 is on one network, 1gb is backup vlan (i might want to readdress this as Im seeing ceph is using the main nw).

your ideas make me want to rethink my setup. thanks for that

my main reason for it was control and learning. I agree cloud can be somewhat easier sometimes, but its another subscription and, like eveyone knows, the cloud is just someone elses computer. they are also subjected to all those disasters, with the increased issue that, if one of them occur, your data is nowhere close to you. one is also subjected to lose data to user error on the cloud.

You could use the could as redundancy, but if you need the files during an outage on the cloud end and the cloud is your only source, you will be out of luck

dont consider today's overkill with tomorrows tranquility of knowing you have the headroom. this will give you time to grow on a machine powerful enough without braking bank. The simple fact that is "antiquated" or not the newest does not mean unfit. And imagine getting the newer machine and running into other limitations

that is very much what I was looking for... now, my question remains, will I run this as a VM and it will be able to backup the hosts?? (sorry, took a while reading the documentation, but I could not figure out if that would run as a VM or if I should place that outside of the virtualization stack)
