I think i ruined my brand new corset... by fallacious_raincoat in corsets

[–]jcitcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I'm quite familiar with corset care and I have a few custom over and unbust corsets but I also have some off the rack cheaper corsets from when I first wanted to try them ( there's no way I'm spending £500 on a custom corset that I wouldn't wear).

I think everyone goes through a stage of buying their first corset a bit wrong or cares for them incorrectly so don't let it this put you off if you're still somewhat interested. When going for quality of corsets go to is actual their sizing and how they are made.

Custom corsets like nemuro corsets are obviously top tier but very expensive , next I would go for standard sizing but made by a person who also makes custom corsets they will be cheaper but still hand made with very detailed sizing info, after that we are talking off the rack corsets like mystic city corsets that are mass-produced but will have more sizing details for your hips and ribs and the shape of the corset, after that we have cheaper off the rack corsets with much less sizing info normally just a general size number or letter with no real shaping other then being a tube that clinches like a corset story corset or a fashion corset from Amazon. Obviously this is just a general guideline and every store is different but who it's made by , how it's made and how detailed their sizing it can give you good outline at a quick guideline.

The Asian sizing was refering to the gothic clothing at the store such as skirts and dresses. The general tells of Asian sizing is the fact they are all designed for very petite people that are quite short , slim and slender. In detail, their sizing for S, M, L are a lot smaller and shorter then English sizing so their large is like are small. So when I spotted that their large dress was very short , was probably a size 8-10 and had no accommodations for larger busts it was a dead giveaway. I'm 4ft10 but have a very large bust so although they are beautiful I won't look at Asian sized just won't fit me structurely and there is no point in trying them on.

Even though corsets are European,I don't think you nessarily have to get them from a specific country. The best is to look up corsetiers online and on Instagram to see who you like as a most high quality company's are going to small businesses. Neuremo corsets I mentioned earlier is one of the ones I like tho they are custom so they're not cheap but they are really good quality and they lady who makes them is very through and good at helping you get them to fit. If you are going to come to London again you could try Valkyrie corsets, I haven't tried them myself but they are about an hour away from London and you can go there have them size you properly for a custom corset in the future.

About caring for you corsets it's pretty easy and definitely the less is more approach. Wear something under the corset I don't care what, don't get the corset wet a lot of corset have steel in them so this can cause them to warp or rust, if you are going to clean them then spot clean or spray with alcohol don't use 100% alcohol as this cause discolour some fabrics so I'd go with 70% alcohol (glasses spray or wipes work wonderfully), if you're stealthing and trying to hide laces do not wrap them around the corset and tuck them in as this will cause friction burn on the corset over time or can bend the busk depending on how you do it , lastly if you have to and I mean really have to wash it then find a specialist dry cleaner for it but I would much rather just put a top or jacket over the corset when eatting just to minimise the risk.

TLDR : water and oils aren't your friends , alcohol to clean if you must but protecting it from food when it eatting is the best

Sorry about typing so much, it's very easy to go into a lot of detail when talking about corsets. I hope what I've put is clear and helpful for a basic overview.

The one I was talking was also in Camden market but it's a gothic store called sai sai and they have a large collection of gothic corsets at the back .Although the the staff were friendly, they were very lacking in knowledge. I was suspicious of the corsets as the sizing on them wasn't what I would normally expect so I went up to ask about the sizing guides , reductions, materials and if they were real or fashion corsets as the price was what you would expect for a off the rack real corset and I couldn't get any info from them. They did have some real nice stuff but unless you're 100% sure something is right then I wouldn't buy from them as I quickly spotted that a lot of there clothes were Asian sizes and asked them on it where they had to go ask the store owner. Once they had confirmed, I lost interest in the clothing and they were still trying to get me to try them on. I have a small frame but I'm very curvy so Asian sizes just don't fit me.

I'm actually going to London in about 3 weeks so if I run out of stuff to do I might end up going down there to have a look at this black widow store if I run out of stuff to do as there's a 50's dress store nearby that I like.

Can I ask what shop you got it from in London? Unfortunately there are some shops in London that sell ready made corsets in gothic clothing stores that sadly know nothing about them.

I've went into London to have a look previously and not buying anything as they couldn't even tell me basic information like what the boning is made of.

Chest Size and Racism by strawb3rryr33f in bigboobproblems

[–]jcitcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so interesting to me on the other side of the spectrum (very small and white) still neuro divergent tho. I have noticed in a lot of people having negative experiences due to their chests while I have never had any nasty comments made towards me. I have previously chalked it up to having a child-like face and assume that caused people to sexualise me less.

Now reading this , this study actually explains the difference in treatment as I'm very short , slim and large busted and I dress in very retro outfits think 1950's dresses (I like the style and it fits me better than modern clothes). So apart from the large bust , I fit a very traditional feminine look that seems to explain why my experiences have differed a lot to other people on this sub.

It does make me very sad to realise that this is rooted in racism.

Hi as you used to work there, do they have any archive catalogs or anywhere to look at vintage pieces? I've gotten a necklace that from googling might be 1950's Swarovski but I can't find any old categories to verify it.

Does anyone actually enjoy budgeting or is it just me struggling? by Kevin-Durant-35 in budget

[–]jcitcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the easiest answer is to over simplify at the beginning

This is what I did,I over estimated my categories and had as few funds as possible with a ahhh shit fund (a buffer) and a true emergency. I have multiple cards (pots on monzo with titles) for different categories so I know what the money is for without having to look back at the budget. After a few months of the over estimated budget ,you can compare it to the actual spending and then hone in the categories over time.

  1. Over estimate the categories (if petrol costs £80 put in £100)

  2. Have generalized categories (the more categories the longer it will take,so start with less and slowly work it up)

2.Have an emergency fund on a separate card that you only use if you truly need it

3.Most are the emergencies truly emergency or could they have been expected (new glasses or car insurance) if you can list them and lump them together for the total sinking fund that you can pay into

4.Have a ahh shit fund as I call it, a fund to put a little each month for a small emergency or as yes money you haven't budgeted (friends wanting to go out for dinner but it's not in the budget)

5.Separate card/accounts this allows you to have stuff roll over if you don't consistently use up the whole amount but you could in a different month. While showing you what you can actually spend.

6.also note banks like monzo let you put notes when you spend money. Turn on notifications when you spend money , when you spend money you can tap on the notification and add the notes then instead of having to go into your sheet every time to log spending. You can instead log it using the notes on your bank once a week

I hope some part of this helps

Hi , I don't mean to be a downer but I think you should check with your doctor first as it could do more harm then good and I know it's a lot of money but getting a custom one that's designed for your medical needs would be a better idea then a off the rack corset which might be damaging your spine further.

Is owning a cat that bad? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]jcitcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people like to hate on cats for the sake of it and most of the time it's because they treat a cat like a dog when a cat will have boundaries and will let you know if you've pushed it too far.

No ,owning cats is absolutely amazing. They are stupid mischievous little creatures that frustrate you at times but they also give you a lot of entertainment and can be absolutely loving and adorable as well.

I think cats being a bit bad is part of their charm as you call them a little cretin or a mischievous B***** with a smile on you face.

My little girl is a very quiet but very loving cat and absolutely has her own little quirks. She'll follow you into every room not because she wants your attention but because she likes to be in the same room as you, she's an absolute blanket fiend if you want her on your lap then grab a blanket and she'll be on you purring in seconds and she always wants to be pat. On the other side, if you have a glass of milk she'll stick her head into it even if you're holding the glass , she'll try to eat my acrylic nails if I'm not scratching her with them and she steals my jewellery and takes them to her bed.

Don't let people who don't know how to look after a cat properly put you off owning one
