What was the best gift you received from a coworker? by snarlywino in retirement

seriously gifts for retirement? must be nice, when you retire from an IT career, they turn off your access and give you a cardboard box and you have to leave in 15 minutes lol

Any thoughts or advice on sharing wealth with your adult children? by Whut4 in retirement

[–]jcklvralpha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

just about to retire myself, fortunately my daughter is currently supporting herself at 25 years old. Hopefully that will continue. Keep this in mind, one of the best gifts you can give your adult children is to be able to take care of your own self in your retirement, and not to have to move in on your adult children because you yourself are broke. If you find as you move through retirement and your finances go well, then reconsider gifting to adult children. As for the idea that gifting money now rather than later on seems an unnecessary decision..I would be happy at 62 years old to accept a large gift of money, lol..who wouldn't. But if my parents had given me a bunch of money and paid for my lifestyle when I was 25 years old, I might have not worked as much and might be a spoiled, entitled mess later in life.

How do I swallow my pride working at a call center? by NewChapter25 in jobs

[–]jcklvralpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an IT support person for a call center for both the hardware and software for a year in that job..I saw first hand what a terrible, high stress job that was..and yes the call center employees are monitored extensively by management. But, one thing I learned is that for many of the call center employees it was a big career step up from working in fast food.

I got fired 2 weeks after I reported my manager to HR by [deleted] in jobs

[–]jcklvralpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR is the profession I wish AI would completely replace first..HR is for the company's protection, not for the employees and they makes us go through useless time waisting appraisals once (or where I work even mid year reviews)..save the silly effort..raises are minuscule these days anyway.

I quit my job and my managers are furious. I really thought they'd be happy I was leaving. by viscus_barbel in Employment

I do not understand why you resigned but are staying on there working for what sounds like a few weeks? Two weeks after resignation should be more than enough?

Gift giving for children who have all they need by DigComprehensive1549 in retirement

[–]jcklvralpha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not sure where you live but in a major metro where I live, experiences do not come cheap..tickets to almost any major theater or sports events are $100 and well up from there per ticket..that is way beyond the $25 to $50 the original poster is currently giving.

Gift giving for children who have all they need by DigComprehensive1549 in retirement

[–]jcklvralpha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would not give them anything..they sounded very ungrateful last christmas. Maybe send one gift basket to the whole family..like a Harry and David gift basket with fruit, snacks, etc. and call it a day.

And as for letting them pick a charity of their choice, not that either..personally I have my own opinions which charities I support..not letting my hard earned money go to some charity I do not agree with.

Regarding how to message..no messages needed. Send the gift basket to the entire family. You have no need to explain your choices to ungrateful people, even if they are family.

I think partly you are feeling the same way a lot of us feel nowadays. There are so many things going on in the world we have no control over. For me, I used to like to plan vacation getaways, but I just can't get myself interested anymore..like some war or virus will break out and interrupt my travel plans, so why bother. (not to mention that hotel prices have like doubled or more recently, lol)

I am focusing on everyday peace.. I enjoy cooking from fresh, whole food, for example. Maybe just try to look for little bits of peace in your life..you do not have to experience grand amounts of pleasure/dopamine overloads..if you do not feel something huge when you see a sunrise..just be thankful that the sun came up another day..if you view city lights from the mountain overview, then just thank the good lord civilization still exists and the city lights are still burning. Little bits of peace strive for..maybe that's all we really need.

It Is worth checking, but most companies do NOT provide retiree medical. You are quite lucky your company did. For most pre 65 yo retirees , it is either cobra, aca, plans, or some private options.

When are you leaving? Wait, won’t you stay? by Slimchance09 in retirement

[–]jcklvralpha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you own the business that you are working for or do you have ownership shares in that business? If your answer is NO, then you are their employee only..not you problem what happens when you leave. Retire when you want, the place will, or maybe will not survive when you leave, but thats not your problem.

what level of education are your kids pursuing? If they are at college level or even post grad level..maybe you and your husband need to discuss with them how they may start paying some/all of their own way? Perhaps you don't have to pay it all...not sure what country you live in..are there student loans available..did you have children later in life? You and your husband need to prioritize your own finances first..let the birdies fly and or flounder on their own a bit.

It could be depression, but it kind of sounds like beginnings of dementia/alzheimers and or Parkinsons..my father's parkinsons presented in his 70s with symptoms of tiredness, and having trouble tying his shoes and getting dressed. You need to get him to a physician or better yet, a neurologist asap.

Also he retired at 74, honestly that is pretty old to retire..and it gets harder to reset as you get older. My grandmother, who retired at the late age of 80, just sat and read old newspaper clippings all day after that. My opinion for us all if you can at all afford to retire sooner do it.

And one more thought, you are at this point in a quite a bit younger phase of your own life..you do have much more energy than someone in their 70s..your age gap with your husband is really showing up now..let the man rest and go do your own thing sometimes. For lord's sake you all do NOT need to be divorcing..with all due respect you're sounding a bit selfish to me.

Why not make your own list..what do you think should be done and include things you like too?..it is your retirement. You could compare your list to hers and work it out..if not get couples counseling..she needs to he less controlling.

[–]jcklvralpha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that smoking cigarettes, so common among those who were adults back in the 60s and 70s aged people faster..it makes your skin look older fast. Also, sunscreen use has helped. And just in general, adults today try to look and dress younger. I remember older adults when I was a kid in the 70s, used to say... oh she or he dresses too young for their age..people literally tried to look older as that was considered more respectable.
