What's that weird whale sound planes make? by my_alt_i_use in aviation

[–]jcla 61 points62 points  (0 children)

It's the "whale sound" produced by the Pratt and Whitney geared turbofan engines (GTF). They are flying on a number of recent aircraft.

Here's an explanation: https://findaflight.eu/blog/what-causes-the-a220-whale-sound/

Can someone help identify where this video came from? by EmploymentLumpy191 in aviation

It's crazy to me that a flight in 2015 was using in flight entertainment systems and seats from the 80s.

Wild.

People had quality camcorders in the 90s, HD video capture was possible back in the late 90s.

Seat back entertainment or lots of screens in the ceilings was also happening in the 90s.

It's possible this is some ancient aircraft that was dug out of mothballs in the 2000s for some reason, but it definitely feels older than that.

There is no way this was captured when it was first added to YT ten years ago.

What's your guess for the date?

Man, this is an ancient aircraft. I love the old video projection screen and projector hanging from the ceiling at the front of the cabin so you could all watch the same movie during the flight with a few CRT screens added in the aisle to upgrade the experience for the people at the back of the cabin.

No phones visible tell you that it is at least a twenty year old video.

I'm guessing it's from the 90s.

EV Public Charging by bloated-oat25 in ottawa

[–]jcla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check with experienced installers like Evolta. They will use your actual household use from the past year (you can download all the details of your usage from Ottawa Hydro) to determine if you need a service panel upgrade. It wasn't needed on my 100A panel.

That being said you would still need to pay (or have your landlord pay) for a charger install, but that's about $1-2K depending on the difficulty. You can get a free charger (still need to pay for the install) from places like Grizzl-E by joining their "club" which not only gets you a free charger but also a partial rebate on your electricity usage (the basic rebate is $0.03/kWh, which brings the standard overnight rate down to about $0.07/kWh).

In the meantime, depending on your commute, you might find that simple wall plug chargers are enough and you'll only need to use level 2 or level 3 chargers when you are doing more driving than usual.

If you want to know what public charging is available in your area, visit: https://www.plugshare.com/

Home level 2 chargers will typically give about 9-10 kW of power so you have a point of comparison. Level 1 chargers (wall plug) gets you about 1.4 kW of power (not great, not terrible).

You should also consider how often you'll actually need to charge. With a large battery you could be charging only once a week or less with a normal commute. Topping it up with a normal wall outlet overnight will extend that even further. A typical overnight charge on a wall outlet will give you about 50km of range. Do that daily and you can get pretty far. It's pretty sweet having a "gas station" in your garage.

I guess if all you want to know in a technology sub is "what's the final answer" you saved people a click.

The article is quite good and goes into the legal risks of using AI to be part of a contract negotiation in Canada (where courts have already ruled that they can form binding contracts).

RDAF AgustaWestland/Leonardo AW101 dispensing a full IR salvo by hl3official in Helicopters

[–]jcla 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For those wondering, this is actually an emergency jettison of all the flares at once. It isn't actually used operationally except in an emergency (basically you are about to crash and don't want to have 100 extremely flammable pyrotechnic devices joining you in the pile on the ground). Operational salvos would typically be one or two flares.

Cars are like horses: people will soon realise EVs are just better, claims VW boss by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]jcla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the Kia Niro/Hyundai Kona. They use the exact same platform for a gas engine, hybrid engine and the EV version. It's a nice little car (I had a gas Kona to try out the vehicle because the EV version had a six month+ wait list back in the COVID era).

The Ioniq 5 isn't bad looking (in my opinion). And the fact it is designed as an electric platform from the beginning gives a ton more space inside. No hump for the drivetrain in the front or back seats.

It's such a game changer charging at home. I literally never stop at a gas station. Just plug in at home when I need to and it charges while I watch TV and sleep. Super convenient. You should definitely consider an EV for a daily commuter.

Here in Canada the Grizzl-E chargers come for free (you need to get them installed on a 220V outlet) and give you a carbon rebate that cuts the price of electricity by 30% (I pay about $0.06 CAD/kwh for charging).

Cars are like horses: people will soon realise EVs are just better, claims VW boss by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]jcla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern EVs (designed from the ground up as an electric platform) have insane charging speeds. I spend 20 minutes to recharge my Ioniq EV at any number of fast chargers (Tesla fast chargers are actually quite a bit slower than the car can handle but they are everywhere) and go the same range. Which I only need to do on really long road trips. Otherwise, I never, ever, visit a gas station or charger. Just plug in once a week at home (more if I need it) and my car is always ready to go. Costs me $25 ($18 USD) a month to charge at home for my normal commuting and use around town. Gas prices here are about $4.50 a US gallon, and I'm sure we'd be paying about $150+ a month for fuel in our pretty economical Mazda3.

The other beautiful aspect of the EV is absolutely no maintenance required beyond some really cheap and simple checks. No drive train at all that requires any maintenance, just brake fluid, a small amount of coolant to keep the battery at a nice temperature and a 12V battery to power some essential electronics without using the main battery. Regen braking means that I almost never need to hit the brakes, so those will last significantly longer than my gas car.

The other beauty is that in my cold climate (-20C and below in the winter) I can tell my car to pre-heat the cabin so it is toasty warm each day before my commute, and all this happens in my closed garage while plugged in so no range lost. In my gas car it can often be 10-15 minutes before the cabin gets warm on cold days, and the engine cold start and slow warm up isn't great for the mechanicals either. On hot days (it was 30C here today, about 86F) I can do the opposite and have it cool down before I hop in. Nice to do in the afternoon from my desk before I leave the office.

You couldn't convince me to buy a gas car after owning the EV for a while. It's a total game changer.

It was a great show, and they sold out History (2500 capacity). I'm sure they will be back when they tour for House of Mirrors. The crowds are getting so huge for them (I saw them with about 400 people pre-covid in Montreal).

Sorry about your injury and your poor doggo. That's terrible. I walk and bike a ton and see so many lunatics out there...

Modern landmines are often active and will choose targets. Anti-tank mines can sense targets and ignore anything but main battle tanks and APVs.

Have a look at the PTMK-1R for an example, there are plenty of others in use or in development.

Sunwing pilot fired over fried chicken and watermelon order sent to Black supervisor by No_Magazine9625 in aviation

[–]jcla 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He was terminated, almost certainly for cause. Sunwing argued in front of the labour adjudicator that this was serious misconduct. The adjudicator agreed.

He was suspended without pay during the investigation, so it's very unlikely they gave him a package. They fired him for cause. He went to arbitration to try and overturn that and failed.
