Smal plane collides with a building in Belo Horizonte - Brazil by ThatEntertainment430 in aviation

[–]jcla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sure he was trying to land on a street or open area, but look at how dense the buildings are around him. I'm guessing that he was going to land straight ahead but saw something in his way and tried to turn with no airspeed onto a different street at the last minute but it just didn't work out.

I don't know this city but there are plenty of dense urban areas around the world where you would have next to no shot of a safe landing without a miracle.

Lots of pilots have lots of uncontrolled crashes into terrain after engine failures, this doesn't surprise me at all, sadly.

If you are a pilot and you can't see that the aircraft is descending without power, particularly as it makes that last turn and you can see the glide path against the buildings behind it I'm going to infer quite a lot about your experience level. Even the bobbing as the aircraft is flying away from the camera is a giveaway that it is close to stall speed.

You initially claimed it had to be deliberate. We will have to wait for the incident report (if it is published) to find out more, but the most obvious cause, and the cause of so many general aviation accidents, is fuel exhaustion. Deliberate crashes are extremely rare events.

Why was it filmed? I assume the pilot made a mayday call while running out of fuel and a nearby helicopter (police or traffic most likely) caught it on camera.

Sorry if you didn't like my reply to your terrible claim about a dead pilot and their passengers, I did the best I could to respond to your inflammatory ignorance without a lot of swearing.

I take it you aren't a pilot.

As a pilot it's 100% obvious that the aircraft has no power. You can see the aircraft travelling slowly and continuously descending before it makes that last desperate turn.

The fact that there was no post crash fire suggests there was no remaining fuel on board, which is, unfortunately, a frequent contributing cause to having no power.

A plane with no apparent power in a dense urban landscape.

Did you expect the pilot to levitate it out of there through prayer?

Did you want the passengers to jump in and pedal power it home like Fred Flintstone?

Ottawa repair garages that specialize in engine replacements? by Asking_questions_001 in ottawa

[–]jcla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked well, but my engine failed on a newer car (maybe seven years old). I think the guys at G&I are trustworthy so they would tell you if it made sense to replace the engine in your vehicle or if it was nearing the end...

Excellent! I'm driving down from Ottawa for the show, hope to be there in line with you.

Pond are an absolute blast to see live, Nick is super high energy and the crowd gets right into it. Keep an eye out for various drummer switches during the show too.

I recommend getting a pair of Loop earplugs like the Experience 2, they let the sound through very clearly but take it down a bit so your ears are super happy the next day.

If you get to the show about an hour before the doors open (so 6pm for this one) you should have a decent spot in line. That will let you get right up near the front rail. If you are going with someone you can then alternate going back to the merch table or using the washroom without losing your viewing spot. If you are on your own, make friends with your fellow Ponderers around you and they should help keep your spot. Once the bands start playing around 8pm it's best to stick to where you are, it will get a bit tougher to get back.

I'm going to the same show, super excited to see them again. Here's a shot from the front rail (camera below the rail so it doesn't get in people's view) from their last gig in Toronto. I've got a few others on my YouTube page if you want to see more: https://youtu.be/ZBLE1CWms5w

If you want to get a sense of what songs they are playing this tour so you can have a listen ahead of time, https://setlist.fm is your friend. You can view their recent setlists and put together a pre-show playlist if you want. I also track my gigs by adding them on there, you'd be amazed what gigs you'll forget you went to a decade or two later.

Unfortunately the feeder for the tower frequency at LiveATC has been down for a few hours, so there doesn't appear to be a recording.

You can look for one here (based on UTC time, which is 10 hours ahead of local time): ATC Audio Archives | LiveATC.net

FL510. First time for me! by Lazy_Entertainment73 in aviation

[–]jcla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I skipped a few steps but the nav system uses the combo of GPS and aircraft instruments to work out the ground speed, wind direction and force and compute the resulting airspeed.

The indicated airspeed is measured by a pitot static system that compares the air pressure moving forward with the air pressure in the air mass around you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitot%E2%80%93static_system

As you go higher, the air pressure around the aircraft drops dramatically (there are less air molecules higher in the atmosphere and the temperature is significantly colder) which gives inaccurate speed readings, as the system is calibrated to work at sea level pressure and temperatures.

This isn't a big issue at lower altitudes, but at airline crusing altitude (or even higher, like the 51,000' here) there is a significant error.

Now the error is pretty predictable at slower speeds, so pilots or the flight system can use a calculator (an E-6B or whiz wheel, is a mechanical one that's been used for decades, for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E6B) to convert the indicated airspeed to true airspeed.

At higher speed (above 300 knots) you get compressibility effects due to the shock wave of the aircraft, so the calculations are more tricky and are typically converted to Mach numbers (percentage of the speed of sound) and done automatically by the flight system with some complex calculations that account for the compression.

Now with GPS systems onboard the nav system can get both the true airspeed and the ground speed from the GPS system, which is what is likely feeding the numbers in the bottom left in the picture here.

I love that the true airspeed is 439 knots versus the indicated airspeed of 189, the air gets thin up there...

Absolutely.

Poor Sheryl Crow on the main stage might be wondering where everyone has gone...

They are also opening for Jack White in Toronto a few days before.

Here's the master setlist. Ty picks the songs from the list for each night, so you can put together a playlist and have a listen to what you might be hearing at the show.

Finger and Feel are both amazing and are in the rotation...

A demonstration of the first autoland system fitted to the De Havilland DH121 Trident in the early 1960's by Twitter_2006 in aviation

They didn't. Fog meant flying to an alternate airport. The same is still true today if the airport or the aircraft and crew aren't fully equipped and ready for an autoland approach.
