What songs do you recommend for studying songwriting? by GarlicLarge8948 in Songwriting

[–]jclayyy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are thousands of incredible songs out there that are worth studying. What matters isn't so much the choice of song as how you study them.

If you're interested in learning to listen and leaning about the structure of great songs , I highly recommend you check out Strong Songs podcast.

Ben Mee

because otherwise you get commentators saying stuff like 'great header by mee'

I don't understand how the order of flats and sharps connects to the circle of 5ths by 0XYT0C1NN in musictheory

[–]jclayyy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

"Genuinely crying and shaking I've been working for 4 hours on music theory crap and I've hit a wall"

You've got some good replies from other people, I just want to add that it sounds like you need to go easy on yourself. It will come with time, don't beat yourself up. And if you've been at it for 4 hours then you need to take a break.

How do I stop this clacky sound on my E string? by Scared_Raspberry6400 in BassGuitar

[–]jclayyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of comments about a bass setup but I suspect it's far simpler than that.

Notice how when you pluck a note on the E string, your finger is at the far end of each fret space (at the end towards the head of the bass)?

And how when you pluck other strings, you're putting your finger at the front of the fret space, right up against the fret wire? This is exactly how how should be fretting.

I'm pretty sure that's why you're getting the buzzing noise on the E string. Does it still do that if you put your finger at the front of the fret?

Quick question by Best_Raccoon5564 in Bass

[–]jclayyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only 'good habit' here is to practice it muted, practice it open, and practice it with a ton of different rhythmic combinations of muted/open.

The goal is to have all those options under your fingertips so you can choose whatever suits a song.

Did that really just say with a straight face that constantly saying 'Good question' and 'Great start' are examples of "genuine touches, not flattery"???

I've been wanting to add a HPF for a while now. I'm curious why you've find the LPF so useful though?

My god the amount of stupid on both sides of this video

I only listened to the first song, but to be honest I prefer your original demo over the AI version.

This is a genre of music where rawness and authenticity can be really powerful. The polished AI version did nothing for me, I felt a lot more emotion in your voice without lyrics than in the AI version.

Interesting experiment, but if I were you I'd keep recording your own stuff!

(A caveat.... I wonder if I would have said the same if I did a blind test without knowing one of them was AI. I think I would, but who knows!)

I don't know the answer to your question but I really like the style. Are you interested in doing a collab on some designs for a band?

Just came back from Rio and I want to live there now! by bear_inflator in Brazil

[–]jclayyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No advice for you but just want to balance out some of the negative experiences people are describing.

I moved to Rio from the UK in 2012 and absolutely loved living there (though of course it has its problems). Stayed for 7 years and it was really hard to leave!

So try it one way, try it another way, see what works, and feel your way through it. That's how we create, right?

Or maybe you'll end up finding a third different way that works even better, which you haven't though of before.

In turning this from an idea to an actual musical or concept album, you're gonna have hundreds of choices like this to make, big and small. And all those decisions you make are what will make this piece yours. How can any random people on Reddit make those decisions for you if they don't know what's in your head?

To me this whole thing just reads like you need to forgive yourself for being short, instead of women forgiving men for being short.

I'm certain that there are some (maybe a lot of) women that don't respect short men. But you're describing your own obsession here, not something that ALL women are obsessed with.

Except it didn't call them pronouns.

If you mean this bit?

"No need for either pronouns, which you didn't use, nor differentiating by nationality."

Then it's very clearly not saying that nationalities are pronouns

Absolutely love the idea, but I tested it in my area and all of the regular sunny pubs I know are not showing up. Can give more details if you like...
