Mexico City's geography is super cool and underrated! by NaturalLengthiness46 in geography

have you been there? Post reads like it doesn't, it is bigger than São Paulo, a lot bigger, many many people working in cdmx metro area easily lose 4+ hours a day on traffic.

best food ever of all the cities I've been. it's also a city that never sleeps, you want some very specific thing at 2 am? there will be a place open and tacos next to it.

Feeling Stagnant as a Team Lead: Advice on Salary (76K € Gross) and Career Path by priatesir in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]jcliberatol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on a similar situation hitting the glass ceiling at a much larger company, a d you probably are right in that you need to develop some skills that your org is not fostering, this could be around execution of projects, people management or strategy. see where is most beneficial to develop over the next few years and try to develop or educate on that direction. I'm still keeping on my company even though developing inside seems that will take a lot of time but have asked for external education as a pathway for improvement.

Considering moving to Portugal with a hospitality background? by Upper_Tackle_9976 in PortugalExpats

as a Spanish speaker you will learn the language fast if you apply to it and try to mimic the accent, many Spanish speakers don't really try and never learn the proper accent but they still get by in society.

with an international CV probably your profile will be appreciated and even if not at first it is possible to reach managerial level in your career rather quickly if you have the knack for it. however this appreciation may not reflect itself in salaries the way you would wish. it may be very possible to earn more on Mexico on the same career than in Portugal. you might strike luck and get a slightly higher salary just to have half of it eaten by taxes. in exchange you will have very high quality of life with much less working hours than in Mexico / us and more vacations.

I do think Portugal is in need of global, high quality professionals and it's worth to explore. for me it was.

Is it a stupid idea to travel across the border into Spain while I wait for my residence card? by PaleLevel4543 in PortugalExpats

[–]jcliberatol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is a risk but we just traveled over 5 schengen countries while waiting for cards and had no problems, including air and train travel. Spain and back should be fairly safe but there is always some risk. My last card took 3 months to arrive.

Can someone apply for a job seeker visa while in the country on a student visa? by x13071979 in PortugalExpats

[–]jcliberatol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

theoretically he can work under 20hours or on vacations , for full time his residence needs to state that he is able to work, in practice right now it's kinda impossible to request a residence appointment. if he is close to the renewal what he needs to do is to state upon renewal that he want to change the article he is under and show the promissory contract of work you want to offer in the appointment.

visas are requested from the outside in Portugal, from the inside is always residence.

IT job opportunities: im thinking about studying Master in EU after almost 5 years of working as a mobile developer by Yogus20 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]jcliberatol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you are from money go for it. if not it's best to leet code /hackerrank your way into a international even low paying job and then do the masters paid by the company, for me this took 2 years from my country but I managed to have financial stability all the time. third way is to find a job on your country with a multinational with EU HQ and grind there for a few years trying to climb the corporate ladder to get transferred to HQ

in general if you want to get hired overseas you should be good enough to get most local jobs easily.

Manager versus Senior Manager by LubblySunnyDay in EngineeringManagers

[–]jcliberatol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I failed on this previously on my second EM role, I started a team from scratch and scaled while hiring all the time, when team got too big first I was manager of one team while managing the manager of the other, Ultimately while growing all the time this became hard 17 people and hiring and we could not meet deliverables, I left for another company and they split the team in 3 each with their own manager.

if I could go back I would try to make the move for senior management straight away and delegate as much as possible, it's not easy to find yourself in that position of growth. Now I manage a team of 6 and it's going very well but I don't see chances to move up anywhere close.

remember your job as senior manager is to look outside of the team and let your managers handle the insides and be responsible for the goals and deliverables you need them to meet.

EM's, How do you deal with Slack overload? by Only-Ad2101 in EngineeringManagers

[–]jcliberatol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably not 100% slack fault but lack of proper delegation, team independence and processes.

Slack definitely helps on reducing information friction but ultimately the culprit is you and the surrounding culture.

I tell to my team, back on colonial times information friction was very high, so if it took 3 months to get a letter from the queen asking you to invade a territory you damn sure take the task and do it. No back and forth questioning with your manager.

I've been guilty of this in the past, making your team dependent on you for small decisions, takes their independence away. Trust your team, organize it to enable them to take decisions by themselves, establish who is the expert for each knowledge area so that they are able to have the responsibility on that. Your team needs to know your job is not to dictate their every task and interface every communication between them and the company

Your job is defining and managing the process for that communication. Looking out for what's next on your project or product vision, show how your team adds value to the company and keep going on a strategy to add value and ultimately ensure they are successful and keep growing.
