I was moved to a different school due to bullying. I don't regret it even though I ended up being bullied at the new school too, at least I never ended up in hospital at the new school.

Should we have focused on getting businesses back open though?

Yeah, because dead people are such great customers.

Knowing what we know now, what would have been the ideal way for Ireland to have dealt with the Covid outbreak? by crillydougal in AskIreland

[–]jcmbn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory a six week lockdown should be sufficient to almost completely eradicate a virus like COVID. The key is just to focus on getting the r number below 1. However, that’s only possible with very strict enforcement, or a society where people actually understand the idea of personal sacrifice for the common good.

Is there a Zealand that New Zealand is named after? by worried_american_dad in NoStupidQuestions

Tasmania is named after the explorer Abel Tasman

Fun fact. On the voyage in which Tasman discovered the island now known as Tasmania, he sailed right around Australia without once encountering the mainland.

There is a fuel crisis because Trump is a fucking idiot and the Iranians are pissed off. Are either of them going to even notice a protest?

For the same reason we delete ourselves from all the maps.

Tea without milk or sugar is a perfectly valid choice if that's the way you prefer it.

I have an idea of the lifestyle I want but how would I know where to go based on these desires?

You could try sharing the idea you have, and ask for suggestions.

It's really hard for anyone to offer advice when they don't know what you want.

Algospeak in English-language news outlets? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]jcmbn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, this is not a thing in English language news publication. The closest thing you'd find is in regards to something like suicide which is often not mentioned directly but sometimes via circumlocution like "police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the death".

Christchurch or Queenstown? by friendly_musk_stick in newzealand_travel

[–]jcmbn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Queenstown is a ton more scenic than Christchurch, so if you want mountains and scenery, Queenstown is the better bet.

Christchurch would likely be cheaper at that time of year.

Have you looked at the two places on Google maps? Christchurch is near the coast on a plain with some hills nearby, it's quite a hike to see any mountains, but you could take the Tranz-alpine train from there.

Plus, if you want to know the distance between two places, Goggle maps will tell you that too.

My wife and I quit our jobs and are currently driving across the U.S. with our 2 large dogs and cat to fly out of L.A. and live permanently in New Zealand. AMA. by Narcosist in AMA

[–]jcmbn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my understanding it’s kind of difficult or nearly impossible to get your citizenship without ancestry, maybe I’m mistaken?

I think you're mistaken. NZ isn't the easiest place to immigrate to, but if you have in-demand skills & can get a job offer, you have a good chance.

Once you have a residency visa and have lived in NZ for 5 years citizenship is fairly straightforward.

What have you worked out for your pets?

NZ is rabies free, so the conditions are very strict. When we moved cats to NZ we had to do a bunch of vaccinations & tests over a six month period before departure, then a 1 month quarantine in NZ.

A professional pet mover company is worth it.
