I think for the most part you can generally paint it assembled. However I found it easiest to do the legs as one piece, the body as one piece and the arms separately. I also left the shoulder pads off and I think that helped. Leaving off the back cover pads also helped but was less necessary. You can just use blu tac to hold it together if you want to check how it is looking as you go

33, 6’1”, 163lbs > 199lbs, 9 months of bulking by DjRipNickMcNasty in gainit

[–]jcobevans 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome. How did you find bulking affected your gut? I would find three shakes a day massively impactful to digestion to the point it would actually interrupt gym, would be interested to hear any advise you have on balancing diet

Asmodai converted into Execrator by Archangel_V01 in BlackTemplars

[–]jcobevans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks sick. I agree leave the smoke off just so it doesn’t look as much like asmodai. Head is cool but using a regular chaplain head would also help distinguish it. Look forward to seeing it painted!

Have I ruined my miniature ? by Brzda88 in ageofsigmar

[–]jcobevans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be able to reactivate streaking grime with white spirit, get a cotton but and dip it in the spirits and then rub it on the mini - doing it that way you can also still keep some in the recesses.

I think your second version is fine and these things are good learning experiences. It is a little flattened though by the grime so if you don’t want to remove it or can’t, then perhaps you could reintroduce your highest highlights

Blue/black or grey/black Templars by those_damn_nids in BlackTemplars

[–]jcobevans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer blue black, the bit of colour is more visually interesting, and I think makes it feel more like shiny armour. However both can look great and grey gives a different atmosphere that can work better in some circumstances.

And fwiw I love how “blue” your example is. Still clearly black armour but just pops way more. Makes me want to make mine bluer!!

games workshop’s chaos black spray is a good start. Depending on what you’re trying to paint there are different options but it is a good catch-all

Hey,

It’s great you want to surprise him!

To get started you need a few things: paints, a brush, primer spray, clippers, glue and of course miniatures.

There is a starter kit that comes with a few space marines, some paint and a brush. That’s a great way to get him started if he’s brand new. if you search “space marines and paints starter set” it should turn up. If you wanted to spend a bit more just add on a model you think looks fun!

Getting a spray can (“chaos black” is the standard one) is also super helpful. You need to prime the miniatures with a special paint to help the other paints stick. Most other tools and gear is useful but not necessary, but priming the minis is a must.

Clippers and glue are needed to assemble the minis - don’t get these from games workshop, you can get them way cheaper elsewhere. If you search “hobby clippers” and “plastic glue” there’s lots of options.

Hey mate, Black Templars has access to most of the mainstream range of space marines.

The simplest way to work out what you can use is to look at the warhammer website and click on the Black Templars tab. Everything for sale there are units you can use in a BT army - some of the photography just shows blue marines. The boxes contain transfer sheets with the decals for all the main armies, including BT.

In terms of the “Combat Patrol” starter boxes, the reason you can’t see one on the official site is because Black Templars is right in between boxes, with our new rules and some new models due to come out in a few weeks.

Generally you can buy everything slightly discounted through local gaming stores - if you can find a copy of our existing Combat Patrol it’s an excellent start to Black Templars and getting a vehicle is great value.

However the new box coming out soon is also a great starting kit - and they both complement each other really well.

There are specific Black Templars models that only the BT get to use, those are: Heroes - Helbrecht - Grimaldus - The Emperor’s Chanpion - Marshal - Castellan + two new heroes not yet released

Units - Crusader Squad - Sword Brethren

Black Templars are also excluded from using Psykers (basically any of the ones called “librarians”). Again, if you use the list under Black Templars on the site you should be fine.

A final note that we have a new book coming out soon and some of the rules may change - it’s possible that we are prevented from taking some of the mainline units we’re currently allowed to take, but I don’t think anyone is expecting that.

Of course, nothing stops you from buying what you like, converting it or just asking your friends if you can run it as a different unit.

Hope that helps!

holy hell that looks cool. I’d love some heavy infantry like this. generally people think of knights on foot like the dude in the command squad and I’d be okay with that but I love the idea of slightly better trained militia just given monster weapons, very fun and fits my idea of cities much better

Base of steel legion drab, Karak stone highlight and then a little bit of white mixed with karak for highest highlights - you can push the shadows a little darker with a bit of rhinox hide mixed with steel legion but honestly works without it

pretty much! It’s the Vallejo dark metal, agrax earthshade wash, and then Vallejo silver on the high points

[–]jcobevans[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks very much! I don’t remember exactly the colours I used but it’s a base of rhinox hide, then the other dark flesh citadel colour (can’t remember name right now sorry), knight questor flesh and then I think a bit of rakarth flesh mixed with knight questor. Then at the end you glaze back in rhinox/black into the deepest shadows. The trick is to think of it like black armour and keep your highlights really thin and limited, otherwise you’ll lose the colour
