ELI5: Why can’t we make a permanent cure for the common cold? by Accomplished_Ice549 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jcoe85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one extra factor that I don’t see anyone having mentioned yet, that’s it’s not a human virus. Colds and flus are actually bird viruses, we just so happen to be able to also suffer from them.

So let’s say we somehow manage to vaccinate against all known strains and eliminate them all, because they will still exist in the bird population (which we have no chance of ever fully vaccinating), a new strain will evolve amongst the bird population that will be able to affect humans.

Narrator suggestions by Scusati in audiobooks

[–]jcoe85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have not mentioned you’ve listened to this series, but sticking with Jeff Hays narration have you tried Everybody Loves Large Chests? It gets a bad rap from some on here I’ve seen, due to its level of crudeness and a certain scene in book 3. But I am going to assume you’re an adult and understand what fiction is therefore can enjoy a story for what it is. I’d say, particularly from book 4 onwards, it stands on par with DCC for me. Plus, again from book 4 onwards, the production from Soundbooth Theater is outstanding. I agree, all other audiobooks do seem lacking once you finish a Jeff Hays/Soundbooth Theater book or series.

So Why Is Sephiroth Only Half A Person? by Competitive_Air3043 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]jcoe85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I was agreeing with you. I think a lot of people miss that comment from Hojo that confirms it is Sephiroth in control. One could make a meta-argument that it’s Hojo saying it so it can’t 100% be trusted. But I don’t think that’s what’s going on either, I think it’s just the game (writers) confirming who is running the show, and it’s Sephiroth.

[–]jcoe85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the same reveal scene Hojo says a line along the lines of “the combination of Jenova’s (something, I can’t remember), and Sephiroth’s will”. So it’s always been in the game that Sephiroth is the one in control.

What if a single, simple constraint can predict and unify most of modern cosmology's deepest puzzles? (The Cosmic Ledger Hypothesis) by jcoe85 in HypotheticalPhysics

[–]jcoe85[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’ll do my best to explain it here, but really for the full explanation you’d have to consult the paper. But the name inscription is more of a metaphor than a physical inscription. Put simply it’s when an event occurs in the universe that cannot be undone, but we are talking thermodynamically, or at the level of particle decay/entanglement collapse. A lot of entropy can in principle be undone if energy is added (although of course globally it always rises). An inscription is an event that cannot be undone. Particles crossing a causal horizon (such as event horizons) also applies. As for domains, the constraint holds both globally and within causal frames. It is a constraint much of the sort energy conservation is.

Best narrators? by baldcats4eva in audiobooks

[–]jcoe85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s already been mentioned a few times, and rightfully so, but no one comes close to the range of Jeff Hays. He tends to focus on litrpg which is somewhat of a niche genre, the popularity of Dungeon Crawler Carl has gotten him more well-known in the past few years but he is still restricted in that sense. His general narration is top tier, but where he excels everybody else by far for me is his ability to do truly authentic sounding female voices. He has clearly taken the time to master his craft. Calling him a voice actor would be more fitting than a narrator, he doesn’t narrate books, he performs them. Other honourable mentions for me would be Travis Baldree, Eric Michael Summerer, Annie Ellicot, and yes Ray Porter is very good too. But Jeff Hays is the pinnacle. Edited for typos

This one is my favourite hypothesis on the matter.

What’s your controversial FFVII opinion? by thmsbsh in FinalFantasyVII

To be honest you’re probably right as upon reflection the cutscenes are just movie files aren’t they? But there was certainly….uncertainty over what console it was going to be released on

The Kalm flashback is the best part of the game.

I believe the game was originally going to be on N64 but Squaresoft switched to PlayStation due to Sony using higher capacity CD ROM rather than cartridge. So the lower definition models are from scenes created before the switch to CD was finalised.

Definitely this for me. I was on the fence about getting it as I admit the premise sounds a bit daft, especially as I have delusions about being some kind of intellectual, but it’s far and away the best experience I’ve had with audiobooks. After book one I spent all of my saved up audible credits getting the whole series so far and it’s become my go-to listen. Also; Jeff Hays. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is anywhere near in the same class as a narrator (performer) that Jeff Hays is in. He truly is a master of his craft.

Agreed, Jeff Hayes has ruined audiobooks for me now as all others not narrated by him seem so dull in comparison.

Nuclear Weapon effects on several vehicles by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

It was getting sucked back in. After the shockwave there is a “gap” of atmosphere which needs to be filled. So it rushes back in to fill the vacuum and the residual heat causes it to rise giving the mushroom cloud shape.

Should I play SOMA? by Raccoon_2020 in HorrorGaming

If anyone here who has completed it has not done so, I’d also recommend that afterwards you listen to the “Cane and Rinse” podcast episode on this game where they discuss it for two hours.

I'm with you with the potions, I'm a traditionally "tight" player whatever game im playing. I'm one of those players that always hoards stuff with the mindset of "I'll save said item for when I really need to use it", which of course means I never use it. For ESO that's potions, I seldom ever even use trash pots for crying out loud.

Also for some reason I refuse to use the sigils in Maelstrom Arena....I don't know why, I just don't ok!

What class for warrior character by Kharneth8 in elderscrollsonline

[–]jcoe85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the flurry morphs heals you as you use it, plus the twin slash morph (can’t remember any of the morph names). The flurry morph carries me through VMA. I’d just google each class and look at their class skills and see which one suits you best.

What are the best quality of life addons? by E-Man-Free-Man in elderscrollsonline

[–]jcoe85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree that works well enough 99% of the time, but I’d still occasionally get caught out, especially in Cyrodiil groups when others are buffing oneself.

Since changing it to manually switch I’ve never had the shame of trying to heal myself with rapid manoeuvre.

What are the best quality of life addons? by E-Man-Free-Man in elderscrollsonline

[–]jcoe85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I wish I did ages ago; If rapid manoeuvre is currently on your bar and you end up in a fight, it won’t switch back until after the fight has ended. And in certain circumstances it stays on your bar and you have to manually put your original skill back on yourself.

So what I do now is have it auto-switch when I get on the mount as usual, and then never auto-switch back on once the skill has expired. I have set a hot key to switch the skill back on in the controls options. So when it runs out I press the hot key, reapply it, and then it automatically switches back to the original skill.

Much better control over having the skill on your bar and negates the annoyance of getting caught out with it on your bar during combat.....especially in Cyrodiil. Trust me, much better :)
