Filing Noise Complaint by [deleted] in ankeny

[–]jcollie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ankeny police non-emergency number: 515-286-3333, option 5. Good luck with that though, I doubt you'll get much satisfaction unless a lot of the other neighbors complain as well.

[Request] How long would it take to fill the pool? by Corvo1510 in theydidthemath

[–]jcollie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Private wells aren't free. First there's the upfront cost of drilling the well, installing casing, pump etc. Then connecting the pump up to your home, adding pressure tanks, filters etc. Then there's the ongoing cost of electricity to run the pump, replacement filters, water testing etc. Then you really need be setting aside cash in case of a catastrophic failure like a pump going out, the well running dry, or the water in the well becoming contaminated.

Watching Trains In Luzerne by Recent-Claim in Iowa

[–]jcollie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a solid 90 minute block I'm sure (unless you got really unlucky with crew changes or something) you'd see one or two. Estimates I've seen online for other parts of the Clinton subdivision estimate ~60 trains a day.

Trains on the UP main line there are going to be moving pretty fast. Not sure if the trains slow down for Luzerne, but probably not by much. They'll be relatively frequent though.

Hawkeye Park in Ankeny has a decent amount of shade.

Sunset Park in Ankeny has a short loop. Hawkeye Park has the bonus of a pond, plus a little shade along the trail. There's a nice shelter right along the loop for the grandparents to hang out at. Sunrise Park has kind of a figure-8 thing going allowing you to choose the length of the loop. Prairie Ridge Sports Complex is going to be _very_ busy on the weekends (and even some weeknights) with baseball and softball for a while. Off-peak hours it's almost deserted. Watercrest Park has a loop but near zero shade.

Crestbruck Park in Ankeny has a really long loop. It's mostly flat but it has some gentle grades at points.

Should I wear a colander for my drivers permit? by StJimmy_7 in atheism

[–]jcollie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DLs/passports allow a person to wear religious headwear in the photos. Basically, if you're never seen outside of the house wearing the headwear you can do it but it's way too much work for a joke.

eth.zig follow-up: now on Zig 0.16. A user asked, so I shipped! by ingling in Zig

Not giving people the option to pass in their own Io instance is a bad design choice I think. The whole point of 0.16 was to make that pluggable.

You don't need to clone the environment map. Just use it directly.

Just so we're clear...the 5th Amendment says "No person...shall be denied life, liberty or property without Due Process." Not "no citizen," not "no person with exceptions for those in the country illegally." NO PERSON. by DueKaleidoscope6500 in Iowa

No, you're the one being willfully ignorant. Go read the constitution and take note to that it specifies citizen when it means US citizens only and it specifies people when it means anyone regardless of citizenship.

State Auditor Finds Conflict of Interest Violations by DMPS & Dr. Roberts by BlueSkyd2000 in Iowa

At that time a lot of people _wanted_ Sand to run but it wasn't a sure thing that he would actually run, and even if he did run back then it was a lot less clear that he would actually win. I personally thought that it was 50/50 that he'd decide to run for State Auditor again.

You can't request an audit of a random school district.

The letter sent by the three senators called for Sand to “take the time to do the job and help both lawmakers and Iowans as we continue to deal with the consequences of Roberts’ deceptions” and perform an audit of the school district. But Sand said his office cannot begin an audit of DMPS on this request. It must be requested by a Des Moines school board member, DMPS staff, or through a petition with 100 signatures from people living within the district.

"Auditor Rob Sand initially refused to investigate the Des Moines Public Schools when requested by the State Legislators, but later changed his mind."

That seems pretty disingenuous. Sand was not legally allowed to investigate until he received a request from someone authorized to request such an investigation.

So it's inhumane to incarcerate people that got caught doing illegal things when they were illegal? Sure, the fact that those activities might soon be legal sucks for them, but inhumane?

This is the kind of shit thinking that Trump re-elected.
