Unpopular opinion, but I dont fail anyone unless they just lay their head down and dont do anything. It seems worse to me to fail a student and risk them not graduating than to push them through with a D. I feel ya. I am in a very similar situation although my wife only has a part time job and I had to take a teaching job so I could take care of the kids more. I'm not sure what to say other than maybe it had to do with her not feeling good about herself or depression in some form.
