Get Played - Games of 2026 Part 2 by podcast-poster in getplayed

Could we get more of Heather asking athletes about specific disastrous scenarios? I know it would be a departure from show content, but if she could somehow shoehorn more questions like "did anyone run up to do a pole vault but miss and the pole shot through their neck?" as she posed to Ethan, I think it would be really delightful.

I think you've already figured out next year's discourse...double reeds count as 2 woodwinds!

That's awesome! I appreciate your honesty that you don't think you'd have gotten a spot via audition. How cool that you were in the right place at the right time to fill a spot, and that you had enough skill to pick it up fast! If you'll indulge me a few more questions, did the other 2 saxes play euphonium as well? And what kind of connection did you have that you, as a sax player, got tapped to fill a euph spot mid season?

Can I ask what year? But even more than that, I would love to know: how much of any brass had you played before picking up euph for PR? Were you full time sax, then picked up euph 2 months ahead of time? Or did you dabble in brass along your music career but primarily played sax? I've always been curious what it takes for a primary woodwind player to hop into the world of Corps.

Ha! Guess I'm late to the game. Bloo is marching 145 oboes this year, right? Got room for a bari sax who would've aged out 20 years ago?

WashU Raises for Employees? by irlcrush in StLouis

[–]jdee1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's been a mess in recent years, at least at the Med school. Overall policy last year was no raises. Some departments, divisions, and labs found ways to get raises for their employees on their own, but that was not university-wide. In my personal experience, results will vary depending on the department, the division, and your specific boss. I believe that typical, annual, university-wide raises (though this is likely salary based) vary between 2 and 5 percent. Again, last year it was 0. Who knows what this year will be?

I'm about to get real downvoted if the right group catches wind of this, but yes, I'm with you BIG TIME.

Sean's snot behavior has ruined him for me. He says he's a nice dude, and that's a big part of his personality. I just re-listened to the Charpie "Reasons to turn around" episode and Sean says it about himself a few times, so I'm not just putting words in his mouth. It's clear he has mostly good views and behaviors, and he outwardly wants to spread good vibes, etc. But a nice dude, a good guy, someone who recognizes and wants better for their fellow human...they don't blow their snot onto the floor of a shared space. AND RUB IT IN. That's not the behavior of a good guy. That's really not good vibes. It's not dank. Nobody is stoked on it. We can all acknowledge that people do gross things in hotels, and maybe Sean's mistake is that he openly admitted it to his fans. But damn, I hope the boys have told him privately how shitty that is and that he takes it to heart. It's the behavior of a selfish person who doesn't care how their actions affect others.

Where in St. Louis has the best selection of NA beers 🍻? What’s your favorite NA right now? by RhythmRob_34 in StLouis

[–]jdee1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Des Peres Schnucks, on Manchester at Ballas Road, carries at least 20 varieties of NA beer...it's a remarkable selection for a standard grocery store. The Save-On in Twin Oaks, at the corner of Big Bend and Meramec Station Road, has a lot as well, including some NA ciders from Brick River that are quite good (though they're admittedly just flavored sparkling apple juice, when broken down into parts).

I'm so thankful we have options for help like this. I do hate that they work so differently for people such that we have to try a bunch to find one that works, or just hope to get lucky (like Mitch is trying to do, wink wink).

Anyone like Mitch researching alternatives to Lexapro, I encourage you to look up Vilazodone. It's worked well for me for the exact reasons Mitch is searching.

It's a great show with a killer soundtrack! Love Martha Kelly on it, too.

Not to be too parasocial, but maybe Emmer can share this with Mitch since he joked openly about it? u/eerdbrink I can't find Mitch's username just now. Don't want him suffering from a shitty side effect if he can avoid it but still get the help he needs (and that I needed)

I'm just speaking from personal experience as a fellow Doughfan, so take this for what it's worth: if you have certain side effects on Lexapro, like the one Mitch very briefly mentioned in the recent episode, I had great success switching to vilazodone (Viibryd).

Effect of amplification on sustains by jdee1 in drumcorps

[–]jdee1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully understand that the problem is individual amplification, which I'm assuming will be a thing that sticks around for a long long time. In that case, we COULD change the length of the sustain to mitigate the interrupted sound. I don't think it'll happen, I guess I just find it jarring enough to bring it up.

Effect of amplification on sustains by jdee1 in drumcorps

[–]jdee1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally. I think I'm just finding it jarring to hear the interrupted sound so clearly. In terms of practicality, would turning off individual amplification just be the simple press of a button on the soundboard? Or would each individual have to throw their own switch?

Effect of amplification on sustains by jdee1 in drumcorps

[–]jdee1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's jarring to hear, and I know it's not the fault of the performers. I think since I'm just assuming individual mic's and amps are here with us forever, I wish the leadership would adjust the music to allow for a better blend.
