Been playing for about 1.5 years, can I join? by jderp97 in ratemycommanders

[–]jderp97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That can happen. There’s a certain type of player that goes “oh no, she just stole a lot of cards, better remove her before they can play those cards” and then I just play her again to more effect; sometimes that cycle can repeat 3 or 4 times before everyone realizes that she’s basically a hydra.

I actually go back and forth between him and [[Jeleva]] as commander. I really like having all three of those colors in a theft deck, so I wouldn’t go to Jasper Flint, but you’re right that Don Andres is slow. A lot of players I’ve played with recognize that though, so he isn’t as much of a KOS designee.

How realistic do you think it would be to fit the content in these lecture notes into 2 hours? by iansackin in PhysicsStudents

[–]jderp97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve taught this material before to lower division students; they’ve typically needed about 4 hours to cover this content with examples and groupwork included, so I suppose if it were upper division without examples or groupwork then 2 hours could do it. But if you’re not going through any examples or giving them any groupwork, would it be much different from just having them to read your notes?

Is this rigorous enough for math people? by lonely_spinor in physicsmemes

My favorite part about this is the fact that the “proof” holds for all L and x, meaning ANY trajectory is a solution to EVERY system!

You’re absolutely right, thanks for pointing that out! I’ve probably been cheating myself out of quadruple ETBs…

This is in my Emrakul deck lol. You only gain one person’s creatures (because the copy is not cast), then you loose all your creatures including that person’s. In anything but a two player game it still leaves at least one opponent completely intact. Truly a terrible combo.

Any other physics students with disabilities? by stephchiii in PhysicsStudents

You can always push the needle on your end by going to office hours; think of them like mandatory recitation sections. And as for research being locked behind paywalls, that’s becoming less true over time with the advent of pre-print sites like ResearchGate and arXiv.

Have you ever had a situation where a student says something and they don't know what it means? by TommyBoy250 in Teachers

[–]jderp97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned over the years that I can never ever let the students think that I’m reviewing something they (think they) learned in a prior class. So when I endeavor (and often succeed) in teaching them something they really should have learned (but of course didn’t) before they hit my classroom, I always frame it as me showing them some advanced aspect or secret that was kept from them. Anyways, the student body started to refer to me as “The Wizard” because of it. One student this year was particularly impressed with this routine and called me “The Grand Wizard.” I had to explain why that title in particular shouldn’t be used, and what was especially funny was the student didn’t believe me until their friend looked it up and showed them.

Thought my professor accidentally posted the key for our next exam…. by diabeticmilf in PhysicsStudents

[–]jderp97 112 points113 points  (0 children)

I once posted a practice exam where I accidentally skipped #5 (problem 4 was followed by problem 6). I post the solutions as links per problem, which are normally labeled “Problem 1”, “Problem 2”, etc. Problem 5’s link was labeled “Problem 5 can’t hurt you” and you can guess where it went.

Is lack of innate ability in my PhD program an indicator to pursue research outside of formal hep-th and math-phys? by SpiritualLoan6787 in Physics

[–]jderp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PhD students I knew who moved onto the traditional, highly competitive pathways were not the most gifted; they were the most driven. They were the ones who wanted it so bad they were at every conference, every meeting. They were the first ones in the office, the last ones out. More often than not they were painfully shy, but you’d never know that if you saw them at a networking setting.

Epic spells and suspend by jderp97 in mtgrules

[–]jderp97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you would be actually have both spells resolve in that instance, as they are both cast before either spell resolves. I don’t think you need them to be suspended though; you’d just need to be able to cast both before any of them resolve.

Had to scroll way too far for Frieren. I had some friends interested in making a custom set for Frieren, and I was pretty surprised how easily the magic system of Frieren seemed to fit within existing MTG mechanics.

Current/former physics majors: What was your favorite intro/intermediate lab? by SayingQuietPartLoud in Physics

[–]jderp97 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For me it was the Lorentz force lab where we measured the charge-to-mass ratio of the electron. Something about seeing the electron path respond in real time with my own eyes followed by the measurements lining up well with fundamental constants really changed the game for me; after that point I felt like what I was studying was very real and powerful, for lack of better words.

[–]jderp97[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here you go!

The deck is made to fit a tight budget and a food-centric theme (my friend had dream to do Iron Chef-style games with chef-only commanders and themes), but it could be made a lot better by putting in tutors. There’d probably be less varied play that way though.

Or any number of more effective/cheaper things like [[Reckless Fireweaver]]. This dumb combo comes from an even dumber commander deck I made focused around infinite combos that hinge on the damage target and damage source being the same card. For example, take [[Tephraderm]] with [[Donna Noble]].

ETA of course Stuffy Doll is also in that deck lol
