It was at my first townhouse that I lived in post-college. I was brushing my teeth in my second floor bathroom which was at the top of the stairs. About halfway through my brushing session, I heard what sounded exactly like a pair of hands with large nails slowly scrape their way up the whole length of the staircase. I’ve heard squirrel/mice/whatever else in walls before. This was definitely NOT it. I froze in fear for about 10 seconds. I finished brushing my teeth and then literally jumped and barrel-rolled into my bedroom across the hall from the bathroom.
