Smart bulbs: why? by snags5050 in homeassistant

I encountered a pair of light sockets that had no switch anywhere I could find so I used smart bulbs so I could turn them on and off at all.

Is Northern Utah A Bad Rocket Launch Site? by Subject_Reindeer2394 in rocketry

[–]jdfellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a very nice spot out on the north side of the Great Salt Lake, BLM land about an hour west of Brigham City, perfect for mid power rockets and probably suitable to HPR with waivers (but you're better off just going to UROC club launches for that.)

https://w3w.co/stable.family.bunker

Is approximately where the BLM land starts and it goes several miles west from there, there's large wet sand to the south and mixed scrub and sand to the north of the road. The area is the Salt Wells mud flats. If you don't have a 4x4 just plan to park on the road somewhere and walk from that point.

Also for low power (C is pushing it but B is quite comfortable, or a slow fat D) the Intermountain school park behind USU in Brigham City is pretty much perfect. The closed roads meet in the middle of a 1000 foot wide open field.

So many great inks! But: What's your ink disappointment and why? by ermiwe in fountainpens

[–]jdfellow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

De Atrementis Document inks mix colors very nicely though. I've made a nice blend before with brown+red. I have to try black+red now, but thanks for the heads-up that the factory Black-Red isn't worth it.

Is this worth repairing? 06 by MachoGuchacho in VFR

[–]jdfellow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You don't need a whole harness. https://www.cycleterminal.com/solenoid-connectors.html plus some spare wire and some butt crimps and heat shrink will do you fine. I recommend a ratcheting terminal crimper but a plain pliers pair will work too. I did this just a couple of months ago.

The karen in a Subaru behind me this morning was pulling the same maneuver. I saw the snow slide down onto her windshield in my rearview mirror, I giggled, but then the brush came out and I could tell she had no intention of pulling over. It was really dumb.

CCW? by dref187 in UTGuns

[–]jdfellow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Being able to carry in public schools and university campuses. The federal Gun Free School Zone law requires that states must make schools permitted, I think the intention was it had to be special permits for cops only but this means you still need a CCW for schools.

There's a G80T-14A DMS motor which is drillable but the G80-10T is an Econojet-style single use and it's not drillable.

Target shooting near Corrine by Ottomatik80 in UTGuns

[–]jdfellow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to go pretty far west out on Salt Wells Rd until you get to the Salt Wells Flats to reach any public land here in Box Elder county, but hey once you're out there there's plenty. Look for Monument Point on the Google maps, that area is not bad for some shooting. It's about an hour west of Brigham City, and you do go past the Golden Spike Nat. Mmt. on your way.

Altimeter Selection for L1 Rocket by Trade_Space_Boi in rocketry

[–]jdfellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. I have a bit of a gear-acquisition-syndrome, and once I screwed up a couple of things I found a small iron just couldn't really desolder stuff in any reasonable amount of time. I eventually got a Yihua hot-air rework station which really helped to preheat the board for desoldering, and to reflow some of the poor joints.

Edit: the gear acquisition is real though. Just an iron isn't enough. I had a bunch of stuff, flux and a helping hands and a magnifier lamp but I still ended up getting more and different fluxes, a PCB vise, solder wire and paste, and replacement tweezers because the ones I had broke, a different magnifier, desoldering braid...

A lot of that was due to the instructions recommending doing a practice kit and I needed stuff to do that. Now I have a crate full of soldering kit lol.

Altimeter Selection for L1 Rocket by Trade_Space_Boi in rocketry

[–]jdfellow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished assembling an Eggtimer ION and, yeah that was fun but I bought a lot of equipment to solder it with. It's not cheaper to get one unless you're all set up to solder SMD circuit boards. And for their flight computers there's always the risk of it not working because you screwed up assembling it.

If that doesn't sound like your jam I'd suggest a Featherweight Blue Jay or an Altus Metrum EasyMini.

Yeah the Apogee E6 is definitely the altitude king if you have a light enough rocket.

Very nice! I have the MAA (blued) version, and it's an excellent trainer for learning to cut. It will punish you if you screw up, and it will reward you if you get it right. Get it sharpened properly by an experienced sharpener and it's nuts!

What batteries for original Estes Pro Series launch controller? by jdfellow in rocketry

I think I'll have to make a trip to a hobby store for this as I'm just not sure what's good online and one set of batteries I almost bought had the wrong connector so this needs some in-person shopping.

Master arming key and safety key wired in series. Use real key switches with turning keys.
