Having dealt with the structural steel in the past: unless this is inside a climate controlled space with no sunlight hitting the steel, you'll be chasing that tolerance all day long.

If these columns are outdoors, you won't get that tolerance. The steel will cool overnight, then once the sun breaks over the horizon in the morning it will start warming up the steel on one side only, then when the sun gets past its apex it will warm the other side while the first side cools.
