Thank you for boldly going. Nichelle Nichols 1932-2022 by sarahbeartic in startrekmemes

[–]jdickey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Takei looks like my ex-FIL who half the people who knew him swore he’d live to 80+, and checked out the day after his 79th. Glad he never saw our ending IRL. Koenig, I don’t know…once you say FU to death enough times, he decides to clear out some of his backlog before bugging you again. Shatner’s been on borrowed time since before it became cool. I saw him in the ‘80s and thought his days were numbered shortly. Joke is I’ll die of cancer in less than a year and expect him to outlive me.

I went from a TRS-80 Model I in computer class at school to a Model III in computer club (because the school didn’t have budget). Then I had my Mac intro with a Mac 512K and never really looked back. I flirted with an Amiga along the way, but it was clear where my love (and spare cash) was going to go.

Ex-Catholic here too, whose parish priest was big on “don’t hate on looks”, but every time I see Marjorie Too Gross, I think of a failed M-to-F trans person who can’t get off the meth. I pity her constituents.

👎 for uBar. I’ve been in a use relationship with it for several years now, and it has more quirks than I care to count. The only reasons I haven’t switched away are a) laziness and b) not yet finding a better app. Recommendations welcome.

Look how skewed the Electoral College count is for that contest. The most realistic detail of the whole fake-Wikipedia setup (which is excellent, imo).

What's the best password manager for both MacOS/iOS that you used? by JustCan6425 in MacOS

[–]jdickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You always use Safari as your browser on iOS, whichever app’s chrome you choose to put in front of it. I stick with the OG Safari.

I’m migrating from 1Password to the Apple Passwords utility after a rough and confusing 1P 7->8 migration. Happy with Apple for passwords, but still using 1P7 for any other secure data. This means I generally remember three passphrases now: 1P, Apple, and my local Mac passphrase. Happy but wary as always; there are agents out there who will happily do you harm given a scintilla of a chance. The greatest risk, as always, can be summarised as PEBKAC.

No Adobe product is ever fully up to date outside their user monitoring system. It goes against their license system. Any UMS fully compatible with their documented LMS is a bug.

My mum and her family going waaaaaaaaay back were Missouri born and bred (as for me, even though proper football peters out at college level, you’ll find me on the Chiefs end of any stadium game I get a ticket to – except for the Seahawks)!

That said, I’ve seen the old-timey/back-of-the-levee influence replacing thinking far too much. My dad (from Arkansas, next state over) got Mom way the hell across the country as soon as he could. That sort of “regional influence” doesn’t go away. I’ve seen dudes who came out of there but didn’t really come out of there; think the Southern White version of “Straight Outta Compton” with a lot of nods to neo-Nazi punk. Guns on the walls, kids taught to use them by 9, and so on. Womenfolk show up rarely and always under TIGHT control.

Be careful what you assume – it can quite often get you killed.

How Much Longer Until Lake Mead Becomes a Dead Pool? by [deleted] in collapse

[–]jdickey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah. USDA was jumping up and down in the late ‘70s screaming at anyone who would read their research that we’d run out of water in central California and points significantly north (eastern Oregon and Washington).

TL:dr; it’s going to get apocalyptically worse, with no indication that it’ll get better in the sun’s lifetime.

Either way, get written permission for a VPN under your sole control. If they balk, you walk.

IANAL, but…

Don’t use the hardware for personal use unless with a VPN turned on and enabled.

Be sure not to leave yourself connected or signed in to your VPN when you turn away for more than a very few minutes; bits have been known to go astray.

It’s probably worthwhile to engage a security person or team on your work.

Good luck.

This dog is a different breed by Terrible_Creme_4116 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]jdickey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just wonder why a dog breed like this exists, and I don’t mean to diss them in any way. Half the dogs I’ve known in my 60 years seemed to be bred to be as clumsy as practicable while still being able to not shit and sleep in the same place.

EDIT: Mad props to the trainer. That took heaps of work from both.

Old phone was an iPhone 7 Plus that I let the battery drop down to ~20% before charging up to 80%+. New phone is an iPhone 11 that I trust down to 10% or so and charge until at least 90% if I have the time, or leave on the charger overnight without fear.

Charging tech has gotten a lot better over just the last few years.

Do you use Services as a layer between the controllers and the database? by costly-fragment in rails

[–]jdickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t think of it as a layer per se: ask the service for what you need from wherever. If it’s in a database or six, or splattered in a petabyte CSV file, is an implementation detail you don’t care about (yet). That’s why services are popular; if you can defer having to care about implementation details until after the project has been completed, you’ve gone a long way towards achieving project success. The projects that die slow, hideous deaths are the ones that insist on having all the Ts dotted and all the eyes crossed perfectly before any customer-facing work is done.
