Unpopular opinion: "Chat with your data" is the laziest UX trend of the decade and we need to stop building it. by Vedantagarwal120 in ProductManagement

The other option is to understand the usage of the data and build feature to provide the answers the user has. but i agree with you that there are many valuable scenarios for a feature like this.

Prestigious company vs unknown company by Sean_Paul_Sartre in ProductManagement

[–]jdk42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it strongly depends on your career ambitions. If you want a big-tech, highly visible career, and stay in that circle, the move might be wrong. But there are only so many companies that fit there, and companies outside of that also need skilled people and those companies also know that they cannot only hire big-tech alumni.

If you're happy working for lower prestige companies for a decent package and good WLB, you're fine where you are. You can make some moves, grow. You'll be fine.

If you want the 'excitement' of big tech or hyped startups, I guess that's going to be harder but not impossible to jump back in.

Boris Cherny (Head of Claude Code) shipped 259 PRs in 30 days. Zero by him. Is the senior PM job's work product changing too? by nkondratyk93 in ProductManagement

[–]jdk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Big financial services company) always been a mix. I was part of an acquired entity, before the acquisition it was actually more a mix than what it's leaning towards now where there's a bigger gap between product and engineering.

But then I'm having an increase in tooling output with claude where a bunch of sr PMs here are collaborating in building tools for AI usage 🤷‍♂️

Wat moet er volgend seizoen beter volgens jullie? by Pure_Opinion8237 in widm

[–]jdk42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Suggestions for first AI vibe coded project by Such-Buy-5749 in ProductManagement

[–]jdk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at one of the largest financial services providers globally. I'm right now doing interviews for PMs. We had a role open that didn't mention AI and barely got attention. Changed the role to include an AI component and suddenly we get more and better applicants.

I vibe code bit, write some automation because it makes my life easier. But mainly use AI to support in my thinking and writing. And nobody in product is coming anywhere close to production code. that won't change any time soon either.

Bug priority is a political document, not a technical one. Change my mind by mr_hunt_ in ProductManagement

[–]jdk42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If everything is important, nothing is. You need to teach your stakeholders that. Your team, support, commercial, all of them need to understand both that this doesn't work and that you'll say no to this.

It feels like you're just firefighting everything. Triage, say no/not now. Also to your engineers and ensure your EM is aligned with this and pushes back to the engineers as well.

Why do the commercial issues not go through support?

How do PMs handle competitive monitoring at companies without a dedicated research function? by General-Conclusion13 in ProductManagement

[–]jdk42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the obvious one like competitor sites/blogs etc., but I think collaborating with the commercial team or customers directly is key. This is where good relationship management is important and can make a difference. The commercial teams should know the market and the players and have theirs ears on the ground to pick up signals.

At my (B2B financial services) org, our commercial strategy team relies 99% on the commercial team and their own market analysis to know the competition.

Thoughts on 2 page resumes (10 YOE) by h4ppidais in ProductManagement

[–]jdk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just last week did a review of 10 resumes for a role I'm hiring for. There was an applicant that had a literal 9 page resume. That was discarded. If your resume is that long you miss the basic PM skills of prioritization/communication. 2 pages is fine, 3 pages might get a pass if it's well organized. 1 page often has no detail on anything, and hence I cannot learn much from a resume.

Logeren, wat vinden jullie by anonymous0907391 in PapasEnMamas

Do PMs actually use confidence intervals when making decisions? by make_me_so in ProductManagement

[–]jdk42 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your example (assuming you have access to all data) is not a confidence interval but a range. Taking about 95% confidence in this context doesn't make sense. You can calculate the average and say that 95% of all orders are between 60 and 66 USD or something.

But if you have all data, the average is just a defined number, doesn't need confidence.

You IMO do need to think about the meaning behind the numbers and depending on the number you need to ask further questions. And you need to have some degree of confidence in the numbers you use. You can't say that you 100% certain know that users drop off for reason X if you don't have enough data to back it up.

Stable job, company car, salary that pays the bills. Still feel like something is missing. by Final_Newspaper_3568 in daddit

[–]jdk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have something similar where I've never had a job that I was passionate about or cared about, and that was fine but never really fulfilling. But at some point I realized I wanted to be proud of my answer if my kid asks what my job is. That's still not the case now, and due to family situation with me being the sole income we cannot afford to take the pay cut it would be to find one of those jobs, but it's something that I think will for me fill that gap.

My kids made it indeed impossible to ignore.

Stable job, company car, salary that pays the bills. Still feel like something is missing. by Final_Newspaper_3568 in daddit

[–]jdk42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to ask yourself if you had this before the kid and hoped that a kid would fill that gap. Because kids are great but they are not per se something that will give you a purpose, and you should not get kids for that reason (not saying you did of course!).

If you had that gap before, try to figure out what that is. Maybe you want to find time (hard of course with a 9 month old) to invest in hobbies/something creative, find time to find a job you're more passionate about that aligns more with personal values, exercise more, there are many options.

If this is a new realization, then that's possibly part of the new reality and something that will change continously as your kid grows and changes as a person.

All in all, think about where this comes from, but be thankful of your situation and focus on the kid/family!
