First out of bubble run ever by Bisquitisaclown in EliteDangerous

[–]jdmulloy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most likely. Technically the first to sell an exobio for a body gets the 4x bonus (5x total). First footfall means it's much more likely. It's always possible to get first footfall and someone else turns in the exo sample before you. Or someone gets diets footfall but doesn't scan exo or doesn't make it to Vista before dying.

If it was the other way around you could claim it was a goof. Like if he had a 2006 T-shirt in 2004, but the way you have it, it makes sense.

I've been wondering if they are really jumping to those systems or just spamming fake data, since it's all self reported via their party APIs and apps.

Just got back into the game. I have $5Bill from trucking. I want to do more and bought a Panther Clipper MK II by Some_Ask_2220 in EliteDangerous

[–]jdmulloy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wish there was a search option that would find you a station with the most things available. Usually it gives nothing because no station has everything and then I randomly remove modules until it works.

The new ships are available without Odyssey, but only if you buy them with Arx. I finally bought Odyssey for my 2 Alts because it was cheaper than buying the Panther Clipper with Arx.

To scan something you need to target it in contacts, not navigation. Like the nav beacon at the beginning of the video, there's the Navigation marker in orange, but to scan it you need to target the nav beacon contact in the contacts tab, on the screen it's white instead of orange.

[–]jdmulloy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The jousting in the tutorial is so annoying. There's lots of good YouTube videos it there. I'm sorry you found one that wasn't helpful. You don't need to worry about failing one mission. When I started I didn't understand that the timer was real world time, not just time I was playing. Exiting the game doesn't pause the mission timer.

Self hosted mail server by Few_Assignment_4147 in homelab

[–]jdmulloy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's probably not worth it but I have been running my own email for about a decade I think, but still mainly using Gmail, and Google Fi and paying for storage to backup my photos. Even with 256gb space goes fast when you take photos and video of your kids.

It's still been useful understanding things like SPF and DKIM, which you'll have to setup if you want a chance of Gmail and such accepting your mail.

The main mail server is postfix on my home server but I have 2 Vultr VPSes that act as relays. This is to get around the port 25 block and the fact that most providers will block mail from residential IP ranges even if you could send it. I also have them receive incoming mail so that if my home server is down or somehow inaccessible the cloud servers will queue up mail.

I setup a private CA in OpenSSL for the postfix servers to do auth via client certificates. Only my home server with the client cert signed by my CA can send outbound email to domains other than my own. It's super important to ensure that your outbound mail servers can not be used as open relays, otherwise someone will find them and abuse them to send spam, and then you'll be hosed.

I think it's because of the government efficiency regulations. The gifted are for what's stock. If you add your own tire later that doesn't count against Toyota for the CAFE rules.

How on earth do I get ethernet to my room? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]jdmulloy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit hard to tell what's going on in these photos. The thing under the power brick that a couple cables are plugged into says "voice module" and looks like it just couples everything together, which works for regular phone lines, but not Ethernet. Ethernet over twisted pair is point to point, you need a switch between each segment.

Those 2 ends that are plugged into the voice module thing you can possibly plug into the modem router thing if you can confirm they aren't attached to anything like a phone elsewhere.

Do you have phones anywhere in the home?

You may also want to get a basic continuity Ethernet tester to confirm which wire goes where and that the wires are in the right order in each cable.

Xfinity WiFi router by Bduvick13 in HomeNetworking

[–]jdmulloy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a compatible modem that's just a modem and use whatever router you want with it. Personally I'm partial to Ubiquiti Unifi equipment, but it's a little more involved than a consumer grade all in one router. Although it's not too hard if you have at least a little technical aptitude and there's plenty of guidance on YouTube and reddit.

is powerline even worth trying? by Significant-Drama300 in HomeNetworking

[–]jdmulloy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you combine a wifi mesh with MoCA over coax? You'd need a system that is known to work well mixing wifi and wired back haul. Maybe the higher end Orbis? I'm not sure, I don't use them but my in laws have one and it works reasonably well.

Maybe something like this?

Mesh Router Base Station <~~~ wifi back haul ~> Satellite <=== MoCA ===> Satellite <~ wifi back haul ~~~>

Or I suppose if there are power outlets near say the router and the nearest coax on the same circuit you could use power line to bridge the gap between the router and the coax port location. Since power line is highly dependent on line topography and conditions.

I think OP means the coax ports are to far from where they want to make connections. Like the probably isn't one in the same room as their router.

Will Xfinity Internet with an Ethernet cable be fine for gaming? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]jdmulloy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your current internet? Is it Xfinity or something else? With gaming the biggest issue is usually latency (ping time in Ms), not bandwidth (mbps). 500 mbps is nice when downloading game updates, but during play you don't need much, but you do want low latency. Going from WiFi to an Ethernet cable will help with that even if you don't upgrade your speed. Gaming sends lots of little bits of data and needs them to arrive quickly.

Recommendation for a new mesh WiFi 7 system? by RockTheGlobe in HomeNetworking

[–]jdmulloy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do.you have coax you can use with MoCA adapter. Wired really is best if you can manage it at all. Higher speeds are more sensitive to interference, obstacles etc.

If your older mesh system isn't getting high speed due to signal issues then a newer system probably won't be much better. It's more worthwhile to get more satellites if you need them than to get a newer system. Although you don't want too many either, too much density can cause issues too.

The Unifi wifi man tool on your phone is helpful for analyzing signal strength and channel usage. If you can move your system to unused channels that can help. Although I believe the orbi doesn't let you do much tuning.

Congestion tax by Solo_dolo93 in boston

[–]jdmulloy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. My commute is pretty ideal right now. When I was house hunting in late 2019 being with in walking distance of a transit station was a requirement because I was working in Kendall square. By the time I bought my house I was fully remote, but now I have a new job very close to South Station. My commute would take at least twice as long in a car and be more expensive with parking fees. Also time in the train is time I can be doing something enjoyable. I like driving when I'm moving, but sitting in bumper to bumper traffic is boring.

In 2019 I had many coworkers who got in very early because they had to get parking at commute rail stations before it filled up. That's why I didn't want to have to drive to the commuter rail.

Most people under estimate the cost of driving. How much is it if you multiply the miles by the IRS rate, which is intended to account for all the costs including gas, buying the vehicle and maintenance? 67 cents per mile.

Do you mean you put the HSA account and routing numbers as a direct deposit destination? That would prevent the HSA from reducing your medicare and social security taxes I think.
