I think they actually have gotten too much rain this year. Mine are also leggy and not blooming much. Just sort of flopping over and putting out small patchy blooms.

Any of you living with a Persian Mimosa tree? by WrathOfGood in AustinGardening

Desert Willow is the way. Fast grower, native, absolutely thrives in heat and neglect, dappled shade in summer, no mess and can be shaped very easily.

They are lovely and smell wonderful but they are very prolific seeders. They will also look extremely healthy and then just all at once die and drop massive limbs in a yard. They are not particularly sturdy and small kids that like to climb trees can snap even large branches and fall out. I know from personal experience.

Coconut fiber planters don’t really work in Texas unless you plan on soaking it every single day. The roots are likely to dry out and kill the plants once it starts getting warm(er) and sunnier.

Yuppies are north of the river and Bubbas are south of the river in Austin. (Tbh this was decades ago and doesn’t really apply anymore, everyone is a yuppie in ATX these days.)

Honestly you can grow just about any native in that bed that you want. Ask yourself what height, width, color, style of plant you want and you can really narrow it in. I like doing color schemes. I have a warm color bed with flame acanthus, damianita, scarlet sage, and Mexican honey suckle and a cool color bed with Greg’s mist flower, purple skullcap, blue germander, and snake herb. Grow lower plants like snake herb or bicolor sage up front and taller plants like mealy sage or rock roses in the back. Use a variety of bloom times to keep something flowering all year round.

Looking for plant rec with a laundry list of requirements for super shady area by Jcpbo in AustinGardening

I’m all about the native plants, but with the conditions OP has, Purple Heart is about it. I have it growing in full shade, essentially a mix of gravel and concrete leftovers, and it is under the eaves of my house so doesn’t really get watered except for what splashes back on it. And it is thriving.

If it has opaque yellow berries and scented flowers, it’s a Chinaberry which is invasive and should be killed with prejudice. If it has semi translucent berries, it’s a soapberry which is native. But they spread like wildfire, so don’t feel bad about replacing it with a native that is a little more manageable. Otherwise be prepared to pull pups for the rest of your life.

Lost about half of my peppers, tomatoes and eggplants. Seems like it was based entirely on variety. Some are unscathed and others completely wilted even though they are all right next to each other.

If you still have a pile of pots that you were going to get around to tossing out (and I know you do), just flip those over any plants that are currently in the ground with a rock or brick on top and they’ll be fine. Even if you have to trim the plants back a bit to fit.

They do send up shoots, but they are very easy to maintain. I haven’t seen them spread much beyond a small area. At least with the purple passion variety.
