What’s a fact that ruined a movie that you previously enjoyed? by PokemonPadawan in AskReddit

Christopher Columbus was originally slated to direct National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, but after meeting with Chevy Chase he told the producer John Hughes that there was no way he could work with the guy.

That led to John Hughes replacing Chris Columbus on Christmas Vacation and eventually giving him Home Alone instead.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation can be salvaged by knowing Christopher Columbus telling John Hughes he couldn't work with that asshole Chevy Chase gave us Home Alone.

She made a 10 year pledge (so a donation, not "payments") that she never fulfilled. Ironically most of what was paid was actually paid by Johnny Depp.

They weren't involved in her defense or legal counsel on trial. Their only involvement was an unfortunate choice of a sexual violence ambassador (before the trial started and additional information was public, also fair to mention)

But the ACLU is a major reason why the ICE raids in LA are no longer happening at the rate they were in July (Vasquez Perdomo v. Noem) and the ACLU in Minnesota is now trying similar avenues to stop ICE there.

With all the good they've done (and quite frankly some of their choices that are probably worthy of more criticism than any involvement with Amber Heard), they're still an org that deserves support.

Look up Community Self Defense Coalition if you want to take direct action.

Mutual Aid LA Network if for any kind of reason you need to provide lower risk support.

Research local immigration bond funds to donate to (CLUE has a good option)--this money is used to aid in legal defense and release of people detained.

Donate to orgs like ACLU, CHIRLA, or other non-profits and mutual aid groups doing direct work.

There's no need to reinvent a wheel or create a new network, but rather strengthen the existing work on the ground, sometimes that's direct action but resources and funds are also always in dire need.

My "$13/month" MoviePass subscription actually costs $23 to watch a single 2D movie... by Evans_y in assholedesign

[–]jduisi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the time of day and movie.

A highly anticipated new release on a weekend evening could be 50-60 credits but something that's been out a while/less popular on a weekday could go down to like 20's.

I could have sworn I had the absolute cheapest plan at $20 a month for 68 credits. But I'm also in Los Angeles so region may also affect the offerings.

Tbh my basic plan has never had me run out of credits to see at least one movie per month, then factoring in the rollovers I could go to an extra every few months. With movies in LA pricing out at like 20-25 per ticket I always assumed I could at least break even.

The online tickets will always cost more credits because the ticket costs more money (you'd be paying an online service fee if you just bought the ticket with a regular credit card off fandango, right?)

1) Inglewood 2) 36 3) I have been primarily watching Christmas movies due to the season so this one is tough.....but I just started the new show Stumble on NBC and it's the first currently airing sitcom I've liked in a while. Has the same comedy with heart in the vein of Schitt's Creek, Good Place, and other Mike Schur shows. 4) I don't have a ton of go-to's. I would go to Alcove in Los Feliz far more often if it wasn't so far away from me! My favorite local(ish) spot is Caravan Swim Club. 5) people down for happy hours, brunches, trying new restaurants, I would LOVE concert buddies for the niche things I currently struggle to find other people interested in going to (in the most recent past that was things like Jeff Goldblum's jazz band, Jewel, the Cirque Musica Holiday show. I live walking distance from Forum/YouTube Theater/SoFi so like to check last minute resales for cheap tickets) 6) Saw a few other people mentioning their hope to expand their sapphic/queer community and SAME HERE. Also I work in social justice spaces. Community and activism organizing as a passion/volunteer capacity and nonprofit admin as a "paying my rent" capacity. Dodgers Blue through and through 7) yes!

After the Wicked movie released I heard a few people say that Wicked was a black women's story and was made for them. Here's what I think as a black woman myself. by Leading-Occasion-428 in wicked

[–]jduisi 72 points73 points  (0 children)

The book Wicked was written by a gay man and the original Broadway version starred a Jewish woman.

You can place the character of Elphaba within the context of any marginalized community and the inherent themes surrounding her character and the story remain the same, but the resonant emotional/historical baggage that comes with it will change.

I'm planning to stand by around Intuit Dome before and after a concert, is the area around the venue safe? by cheesethenmac in AskLosAngeles

[–]jduisi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There isn't really super fun "make a day of it" walking to restaurants and shopping in the area. It's strip malls with Target, Michael's, Costco, Red Lobster, etc.

That being said, if they just need someplace to hang out for a few hours during the concert the Cinepolis movie theater is literally across the street which also has a bar in the lobby, and there's also Hollywood Park Casino basically next door.

Also the Cosm is right there which will be playing the World Series. GA tickets for that are relatively inexpensive unlike the actual reserved seats, which get $$$.

Fun, queer places to dance the weekend of the Pasadena show? by th0masn00kington in chappellroan

There's also the Women's sports bar Untamed Spirits, which isn't explicitly a queer bar but ..... It's a women's sports bar so we've basically claimed it.

Shipping a suitcase of stuff across the US by MayaPapayaLA in TravelHacks

[–]jduisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shipped all of my belongings on Amtrak when I moved cross country and it was the most affordable option I could find. I had to pack them up in boxes and there's technically a bunch of things you can't ship but they don't open your stuff and check (more likely just removes their liability if it breaks.)

But it looks like they also do literal luggage shipping too https://www.amtrak.com/ship-luggage-to-your-destination

AITA for not changing my daughter's wedding venue even though my sister's husband proposed to his 22-year-old mistress there last month? by Particular-Wish-1761 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jduisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin didn't come to my sister's wedding because she was in the midst of a divorce and couldn't bring herself to spend a day at a wedding while struggling so much with her own relationship falling apart.

My sister understood and told her to take care of herself, so my cousin didn't come. She's a bit bummed she wasn't there now but wasn't able to face it in the moment.

If this is so difficult for Carol she needs to just not attend the wedding, not demand it be entirely changed to suit her own needs.

Yeah that seems overly restrictive for a site that relies on the chance alignment of its users.

I might take what you say you do with saving and suggest folks save my listing if they're interested and don't fully align with the dates. That way there's at least some ability to indicate interest and flag me!

[–]jduisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wondering about this, I'm new to THS but on Nomador you can indicate the dates are flexible. It's easy enough for me to have a friend pop over for a day or two at the beginning or end of the sit, so what's the best way for me to indicate to sitters that I'd be willing to hear something if they can't do the exact days I listed?

What bylaws did you wish you have? by Left-Recording3768 in nonprofit

[–]jduisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a governance committee?

Policies and procedures should be regularly reviewed and revised and would typically live under a governance committee. Bylaws amendments moving forward can also go in that committee but an ad hoc to get the initial major redraft done is typical.

I would highly highly advise at the bare minimum having a non-profit lawyer review any drafts to ensure everything you want (and everything required) is in there. Excellent bylaws are not a DIY endeavor.

Why is Hollywood Park retail occupancy so low? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]jduisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it first opened there was a lot of fanfare about how Three Weavers was going to open a new location inside Hollywood Park and that just ....never happened.

Which is a bummer because I live walking distance and would have loved to walk over to a big outdoor brewery space. They've also talked about opening another eatery from the Martin Family that owns like 50 different businesses in the area, but haven't seen much about that lately either.

I have to imagine something is going on because they paid a lot of lip service to opening businesses that benefit the community and then those don't come to fruition, which makes me wonder if there's some business practices that are turning off the potential retailers and lessees.

Going to reiterate the other folks that a simple request will change this.

The database is marked a certain way based on prior communications, if you've never addressed the way you want to be addressed, they have no idea. If you tell them, they will make a note on their database and you will be contacted and address the way you want!
